We are finally off! Because of the cancelled flights discovered on Tuesday, we have been e-mailing and phoning our travel agent for three days and didn't get the final details nailed down until this morning. I just want to thank Eugenia and Daniel at Airtreks for making the extra effort to get this all straightened out before we left. Thanks guys. The net gain is now we have to spend one night in Bangkok, Thailand in between Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Good thing we all love Thai food. It'll be one more experience to talk about and one more country to check off the life list for the kids. Adios.... read more

After our 8 hour flight on British Airways, we finally arrived in the U.S.! We rented a car and drove to Cecilia's sister's house. Ann and her husband Steve got married last July and now live in Ashburn, Virginia, a sprawling suburb about 45 minutes outside of Washington DC. We used to live in Sterling, Virginia (next to Ashburn) before we moved to Seattle in 1997. So there were many people to visit, old neighbors and coworkers, and Ramsis' brother Yaz and his wife Tamee who live in Baltimore. We had a busy few days ahead of us! The day we arrived we had a visit from Helen and Larry (Helen was a former co-worker of Cecilia's at the college). It was great to reconnect with them...it had been at least 10 years! On Thursday, we ... read more

Had a wonderfully easy train ride into Newport News from Boston. It was fun to see each sign for the places we stopped - Baltimore and Philadelphia and Washington D.C. I met an older gentleman who I chatted with for a while. He told me about his commute from Virginia to New York City - crazy! I got into Newport News around 11:30 am and met Jada and her fiance Andrew at the station. We headed to a diner for some breakfast, sat at the counter, and I just went with what Jada was having - grilled cheese and a double order of hash browns smothered in cheese. I'm all about that. They drove to the apartment through Newport News over some pretty bridges to their apartment, and we spent the afternoon talking and she introduced ... read more

Back to the trail. Dogs barked, cars drove by, hikers clomped around the hostel, we slept a little late. 7:45AM we crawled out of our racks to start the day. We had our last fresh fruit with cold cereal and a cup of joe for me. Packed our bags then off to the outfitters for the pack weigh in. Mine was a bit heavier than I had wanted, but we are packing some food, that is a treat. Fresh cheese, torts and peanut butter, couscous and a few other things that we sometimes don't carry. Headed out the door and the first drops of rain started coming down. We can walk in the rain just as well as anyone, however to leave town in the rain seemed un-motivating. We walked to the end of the park ... read more
