The night passed without any problems - no rain, wind or unwelcome visitors. The fellow who had been in the shelter packed up and was gone about 5:30AM. A second hiker had come in after we went to bed, his tent was up near the privy. He wasn't up when CC and I climbed out of the tent. We had everything packed except for the food bags before 7:30. We had a nice hot breakfast with hot beverages from our re-supply box:-) We were on the trail by 8:15 heading up Pine Mtn from 4,050' to 5,000'. From here south the elevations bounce up to the 6,000' range here and there. The climb wasn't too bad with much of the trail at 3% grade or less. We started out in the hardwoods but soon it changed ... read more

Half way to Georgia! Four miles after starting today we hit the half way mark. When we hit the Old Orchard Shelter we have now walked further than the NoBos. CC still thinks they are in better condition than us because of the Smoky Mtns, but I say miles are miles and we are just about as in shape as we will get. We can stand to loose a few more pounds, but as far as walking ability we are real tough now. We started walking at 9AM and made the 10.2 miles in a total time of five hours. That includes all breaks which are fewer than they used to be. We woke up around 6:45AM and took our time packing up. Breakfast was at the diner, we sat down at 8AM. CC ate French ... read more

Lost on the Moores. Rain started at 4AM drumming on the tent fly ever so lightly at the start, then growing in volume as time passed. Wind rustled the pines surrounding our nylon home, then slowly gained strength until it almost shrieked. Violent vibrations shook the aluminum skeleton and thin skinned house we tried to sleep in. No water came through the nylon, but with each gust it seemed like we would be drowned in rain. We laid in bed drifting in and out of our sleepy dream world until 7AM. The wind and rain had abated little since it first woke me at 4. CC and I were slow to rouse and not motivated to crawl from our warm, dry bags. Breakfast was cooked in the vestibule without incident. The rain slacked off long ... read more

No rain, no wind, and lots of sound sleep as the night passed into morning. I woke up at 6AM and needed to visit the privy. Once up and out of the tent it is no good for me to try and return for more sleep. Got the stove, food bag, water bag, and cook pot ready for breakfast. While heating my water, one of the hikers who had also risen early was listening to his small radio for a weather forecast. He said they are predicting more rain for this afternoon, not good. Most of our stuff is still damp from yesterday’s deluge. Our plan was to walk about 10 miles to a primitive camp, then do the last five plus miles tomorrow into Damascus for a ‘nearo’ (near zero) day. Then for Alabama on ... read more

A good flight through Baltimore to Norfolk. Staying with Dave, Linda, Tommy & Mark in Newport News; home of Christopher Newport. Weather has been pretty good, some rain. Included are pictures from our journey through Colonial Williamsburg & the House of Burgesses. We even got to see the Coopersmith! Perhaps Jamestown tomorrow? Or maybe golf? Thursday I'm off to Washington D.C. As for Greece, I finally made a reservation beyond Athens, I should be spending the next 4 nights on the island of Ios!... read more

Up and on the trail by 8AM. It was nine miles to the next shelter and then town was an extra three miles beyond that. We broke it up into reasonable chunks, had a break at the Davis Path Shelter, then headed for town and a hot meal. The trail was reasonable and we made great time into town by 4PM. After a fine meal we headed back on the trail looking for a spot to put the tent. The afternoon storm was threatening and the hikers we talked to said the shelter was about three miles away. The trail wound up and down through the rhodie groves, pastures, and hard woods. We looked continually for a tent site to no avail. The trail went up and up, even though we missed the rain, we got ... read more

Good conversation was on tap for the morning. "Shadow", CC and I all roused out of the sack about 7:30AM then covered topics from religion to chemical warfare. We finally got on the trail at 9:30. After yesterdays big miles and CC's fall. Man I forgot to put that in my entry, I shall regress for a few lines. We had finished in town and were headed for the shelter. While in a darker section of the forest I stumbled over something small. CC turned and scolded me like a young boy. She knows if my ankles go bad she will no longer be able to continue, so she mother's me about watching where and how I step. Not three minutes later I hear her feet smack something then bounce off a piece of wood in ... read more

Quiet night, good sleeping, no rain, light wind warm with birds singing as we climbed out of the bag to start the day. It was our last day for hot breakfast and it was good. The last store was a poor excuse of a store and they didn't even have oatmeal! After breakfast it was up Chestnut Knob for a mile. The first 1/4 mile was the worst, and then it leveled off. This shelter is unique in that it is an entire building door and windows included. It is a bald knob, the folks that spent the night said the sunset and rise were beautiful. Thunder rolled as we left the knob and the skies looked threatening, time for pack covers and rain jackets. Rain did come but only drizzle and just enough to be ... read more
