Today, following breakfast, we headed out to Bryce Canyon. As we are driving we see so much and every area is different. As we were driving to Bryce we went around a bend and suddenly everything was this beautiful deep red color like we had never seen before. We immediately pulled off the road and took pictures. We learned we were in the Red Canyon. We just were in awe at the land forms, rocks, mountains, hoodoos, and natural bridges. This was just a precursor to what we would see once we got to Bryce. When we entered Bryce, we stopped at the visitors center to pick up maps and formulate a plan. We were really on a time limit as we had packed a lot into our day. The first place we stopped was Bryce ... read more

On Sunday we loaded up and headed down through Utah to spend a couple days at Cedar City, a town about halfway between Bryce National Park and Zion. We took time to stop at Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City. We went to the Great Salt Lake State Park, then it was back in the car and on to Cedar City, Utah. We checked into our airbnb condo in Cedar City on Sunday evening after driving around trying to find it. The directions took us abut 10 miles out of our way, but finally we found where we were supposed to be. It was a very nice place that had been recently remodeled and was located near gas stations, restaurants, and shopping. We were all tired so it was off to bed as we had a ... read more

We’d promised a grandkids trip to the 4 middles, ages 5-11 and thought that a trip that included Dinosaur National Monument for our 5-year-old obsessed with Dinos, would be good. We had put off the trip for a variety of reasons, and finally were running out of time before school started. As school is starting next week and kids clamoring to go, now was the time to put up or not! We decided to leave early Saturday morning and beat the heat over the pass. That meant shopping with 4 kids on Friday: Costco, Trader Joe’s, and the local supermarket. Of course, we had so much food that the RV fridge couldn’t hold anything more and we had to use our electric ice chest. Saturday morning came too early as we’d been up packing until 2a.m. ... read more

29 Jun 2016: This is our last day in Cedar City and our last play. Alexander Dumas' The Three Musketeers is a tale of courage, love, deception and murder. All elements of a good drama. It rained at the beginning of the play and action was halted until the rain stopped and the stage was dried. One does not want to engage in swordplay on a slippery stage. Later, a door malfunctioned requiring another delay. This week is actually a test run in front of a live audience so these incidents should not reflect on the quality of the production. Many of the actors are SAG members or have their conditional credentials. We have enjoyed the performances over the past 15 years or so and intend to continue attending as long as we are able. Besides ... read more

28 Jun 2016: Ahhhhhhhh! It is only 88 degrees here at 1345 and we have just experienced a brief, light rain shower with the prospect of more to come. It was so enjoyable to sit outside under the awningthatstillworks and feel the cool moist breeze flow around my parched skin. It got a little too breezy for the awning to stay up so I retreated inside. Now the breeze has subsided so I may go out again. Our big events today are dinner and the play, so our activities don't usually pick up until noon at the earliest. I will grill some chicken or Hot Dogs unless it looks like rain in which case we'll eat out. We always have a plan B, even if plan B is to do nothing. I've included a photo of ... read more

27 Jun 2016: Our first full day in Cedar City. In the morning I repaired the awning without breaking anything and impressed one of our neighbors in the process. He had seen me working on it and came over to see if he could help. Once apprised of the situation however, he admitted he had nothing to contribute other than to relay an experience with an unrelated problem he had that caused a "big problem". Actually, all that was needed was to free the clip on the side of the awning that held the inner strut to the outer arm. Once it was freed, the awning could be deployed. Usually all you have to do is pinch it and it is freed but that didn't work. When my friend across the way saw that the awning ... read more

26 June 2016: We left Page at 1100 hrs and headed North on Hwy 89. This is a very scenic drive; winding roards climbs and descents, passing lanes for the convenience of those behind us. We passed through Kanab without finding a suitable place to park for lunch. I know we've eaten there before. Kanab was founded in 1870 by Joseph Hamblin when 10 Mormon families settled near Kanab Creek. Proceeding North we did stop at Mt Carmel for lunch. This is where the road leading to Zion National Park comes down out of the mountains so there are usually several tour buses parked there. After lunch we continued on Hwy 89 which follows a river valley flanked by small farms and ranches punctuated by little communities nestled among Cottonwood trees. Soon we reached the turnoff ... read more

Well all you cats... I started the day by saddling up the pony to ride. Ooops! Not true, but now that I have your attention, we started the day with a wholesome breakfast at the Driftwood Inn after getting up at 6:00 am. Susan, the chef, prepared scrambled eggs as per our request. Then we went for a walk down by the falls again, in the brisk morning air. I call -7C or (20 F) brisk. We were back on the road by 7:45 am and witnessed beautiful frost on the trees and shrubs until the sun finally burned it off. If you are ever on I-15 between Idaho Falls and Pocatello Idaho, the Lava Formations rest stop is well worth the stop. The phone rings loudly in the dark room. It’s a little disorienting at first. The noisy heater cycled too often during the night and we really never went all the way out. We just pick the phone up and put it back in the cradle without saying anything. It must be the wake-up call we ask for last night. Nobody else would be calling this early. It’s 2 ½ hours before sunrise and we have to get going if we’re going to make it. Luckily the night desk clerk has made coffee for himself. We grab a cup without asking, we don’t want to take a chance that he’ll say no. It’s off season and he seems a little startled that anyone is up this early.
