Day 5- Set sail from San Diego to Utah today. Made a pit stop at the coolest bike shop in Hurricane, Ut called Over the edge. Sven's Step Dad recommended we stop in and and get details on a local trail. The guys in there were great, set us up with a map and all the necessary info. It felt pretty bad ass to tell other bikers that I sprained my ankle mt biking. Pathetic I know, but my story could be something silly like drunkenly falling down a set of stairs... I call that a win. I obviously played the role of shuttling Sven to the top and meeting him at the bottom of a dirt trail. It was beautiful red rock cliffs and rolling hills all around. We drove about an ... read more

JOHN D. LEE The Overland Trail opened through Utah in 1857 for commerce and mail delivery to California. President Buchanan sent a full brigade of soldiers to Utah under command of Col Albert Sydney Johnston to protect the trail and to assure that members of the Mormon Church adhere to federal law. Rulings of the federal court had been routinely ignored by church members whose first loyalty was to Church President Brigham Young, and not to the federal court. The approach of troops was seen by church leadership as an invasion of sovereignty and the Nauvoo Legion was ordered into battle against the army. The entire territory was ordered into readiness for war. Preparations forbid the sale of livestock or supplies to emigrants passing through. It was an unfortunate situation fo... read more

Kolob Canyons There are two Kolob sections in Zion National Park; Kolob Canyons located 18-miles south of Cedar City and Kolob Terrace accessed from the town of Virgin, 12-miles from the south entrance of the main section of the park. Both Kolob sections can proudly boast of their magnificent mountains of red sandstone, however the two are as different from each other as they are from Zion Canyon or Zion’s east side. Kolob Canyons is a remote 30,000 acre block of the park which is located northwest of Zion Canyon. Its set at a higher elevation than the main park, in fact, it boasts of having the parks highest peak - Horse Ranch Mountain at 8726 feet and some of Zion’s youngest strata. Directions - To get to it from Cedar City, travel south on I-15 ... read more

Vast swathes of sands replace the buildings as the network of highways become one wide interstate. I’m sitting on a bus looking at an invisible point outside the window, spaced out by the wide stretches of the Mojave Desert. After hours of waiting for the sign, I see it at last – "Arizona, the Grand Canyon State welcomes you." The sands give way to towering red rocks hewn into interesting shapes by millions of years of geological processes. The views outside are unanimous in their announcement – we are not in Los Angeles anymore. Today is the first day of a twelve-day road trip around much of the western U.S. Just a day before, we were in Seattle, where we got off the ship, and after a few hours of rendezvous with friends there, we hightailed ... read more

Our drive through Yosemite National Park was picturesque. We took time to stop and enjoy the view and breathe the fresh, clean air. We also found 12 inch pine cones, which we were tempted to bring home, but we didn’t have enough room in the SUV and we didn’t think Mother Earth would appreciate it. We stayed in a quaint, ski resort village called Mammoth Lakes. We were warned that the bears were extra hungry and came into town every night. We slept the best yet in the cool mountain air and didn’t see or hear any bears. (Not even Joe snoring!) We spent the next day driving through “No Man, Or Woman’s Land” across Nevada. The land was desolate and we happened upon cowboy towns, tumble weed, wild horses and drove through a dust storm. ... read more

This part of Utah is always a diversion to take a look at through camping season. The surroundings of this campground have such a great deal of things to offer. There’s plenty of outdoors recreation available in close proximity such as swimming, hiking, and fishing, so you won’t get bored.Enterprise Reservoir Campground gets very little rainfall; during July this area sees the most rain; June on the other hand is the driest. It’s not very good for you to spend too much time indoors; you need to get out of the house sometimes, and EnterpriseReservoir Campground in Utah is a fine spot to go.The Pilot Peak Trail offers hiking at its best; of course, everyone loves Beaver Dam State Park. This is beyond doubt a magnificent campground. Enterprise Reservoir Campground is right by the South Boundary ... read more

Cedar City to Grand Canyon For this update, I will post a few photos of Cedar City and along the road to Kanab, Utah. I met Betty's son Randy at Kanab and we will go to the Grand Canyon tomorrow morning. I will stay there the rest of the day waiting for sunset. Randy will head back to Santa Rosa after our dedication to Betty at Angel's Window. Dennis Note: A few words about Cedar City. It appears to be an excellent location for landscape, nature, and wildlife photography. It is within a few hours of 4 National Parks and several National Monuments and about 4 hours to Moab, UT. Why concern about NPs when good photos can be taken anywhere? Very true, but NPs indicate that the area is photogenic and the likelihood of great ... read more

Hopi and Cedar Breaks Betty and I love the Hopi. They don't fight - no wars or attacks on other tribes. They believe in peace and negotiation as a few years ago, they won a court case to expand their lands. This suit with the Navaho had been going on for years and rather than bend or settle, they held their ground because they knew they were right. Sound like anyone you knew. First things first. KC was right and on my drive out to the Mesas, the wipers got a workout. We arrived about 8:00 and some activities were underway. I found out the no camera rule is enforced as I was told by 2 residents - no cameras. I took only a few photos and all but one was from the car. There are ... read more
