Its only a short 70 mile drive from the Black Hills to the Badlands. We set up camp in the town of Wall, South Dakota, famous as the home of Wall Drug. Its a large gift shop/ diner/ tourist trap that started long ago as a simple drug store offering free ice water to travelers. It is advertised repeatedly on billboards along I-90. We did go through the place, very busy, but we did get our free ice water. In the afternoon we went into the national park. It was 98 degrees, but cooled off a little after a rain shower. I like the Badlands. The geologic features are amazing plus plenty of wildlife on the grasslands, and being adjacent to large reservations it has strong cultural ties to the Native Americans. We saw plenty of ... read more

We spent today in and around Custer State Park, starting with the wildlife loop road, where we saw plenty of wildlife, then stopping for lunch at one of the park lodges. I went for the bison burger this time while Barb tried a barbecue bison sandwich. We heard the couple seated at the next table tell the waitress that they were from Pennsylvania. Amazingly, they were from Mill Village! We then visited the nearby Black Hills towns of Custer, Hill City, and Keystone, and went to Mount Rushmore. Considering that today is September 11, it was an especially appropriate time to visit Mount Rushmore and to pause and reflect on the greatness of our nation. We circled back into Custer State Park on what is called the Iron Mountain Road, and wow, what a drive. Lots ... read more

We found a Methodist church in Sundance so we went to services this morning. The congregation was mostly elderly with only two young families. We talked with an elderly couple who have been ranchers in Sundance all of their lives. Its nice to get a local perspective. Sundance seems like a pretty nice town. Our destination for today was the Black Hills, a fairly short drive of a hundred miles. We have been there before and really like the area. We decided to camp somewhere convenient to Custer State Park, but I couldn't reserve a site in the park itself. After setting up camp we went into Custer State Park and poked around a couple areas. We saw lots of wildlife, including bison, pronghorns, deer, bighorn sheep, turkeys, and prairie dogs. We will go back again ... read more

blog 08-29-17 Where the Deer and the Antelope Play The night in Casper was quiet and comfortable with the temperature dropping to 55 degrees. In the morning we took the dogs on a longer walk through the campground and along the river. It's the North Platte River and the current is quite swift. We headed out about 9:30 am, found rt 26 and headed west. It was a 2 lane 65 mph road through the countryside with very little traffic on it. We passed more of the same as yesterday with rolling hills and gullies. It's amazing that we could travel over 100 miles with nothing vertical, it was absolutely flat. There were a lot of bee hives all along our route, a real surprise. The road led to Riverton, a small town with a Walmart. ... read more

Saturday, 26 August, 2017 It was a fairly short drive to Badlands National Park and we arrived around 11 am. We cooled our heels in the Visitor Center until time to check into the campground. Once the camper was set up, we headed for the west end of the park because Kerry wanted to drive to the Prairie Dog Village there. Unfortunately, it was about 5 miles down a washboard gravel road and Kerry had had enough of that after ½ mile. It was hot, hot, with temps up in the low 90's, and no shade in the campground, so we left the windows open on the camper. We've experienced bad weather in the Badlands before, with storms blowing up with little notice, so we kept our eyes on the skies as we enjoyed the beauty ... read more

The architect of this landmark died in March 1941, but it is the war effort who ended the funding of the project in October the same year. Mt Rushmore, carved in granite is a leading monument in the United States, honoring the four of their Presidents, also called the founding fathers. They were the first President, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the third President, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President. blog 08-26-17 Our Forefathers Day The morning was glorious with clear blue skies and low 60s temp. The dog walk was beautiful, just smelling the air filled with the scent of pine and grassy smell. We are starting to acclimate to the alititude better, able to walk without feeling like there is no air. We are at 4,774ft right now, twice what I am used to and 4 times what Ginnie is used to. Even Linus seems to be having a little trouble, just not himself. We sat outside for a short time then formulated a plan for the day. I knew that thunderstorms would form in the afternoon so we headed out early for Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. There was traffic at the entrance to Mt Rushmore but we found a parking place in ... read more

Time to drive West, for the final legs of our 45 days little trip. Are we bored? No. Have we seen enough? No. Do we have long drives ahead? Oh yes, some solid few more hours driving our cool Mustang. But this is ok, I'm not bored yet of driving this cool toy! Today it's all about driving and moving West. Google map put it simply, driving from Chicago to Sioux Falls is minimum 8h30 drive without any stop, a nice 574 miles. But this is if only we take the shorter drive...because why not drive through one or two more states if we can. So before heading West, we are heading North to cross into Wisconsin. The idea is today to do a mix between highways, and back country roads. If we do only back ... read more

Wednesday, 23 August, 2017 We are so out of the habit of camping. Hooking up the camper, securing things inside, setting up camp; all had to be relearned. This trip we are heading north for starters. We crossed the Ohio River at Paducah and drove to Cahokia Indian mounds near East St. Louis, IL. Kerry was a bit disappointed, so we didn't stay long, continuing north up the Great River Road in western Illinois. The drive was peaceful and we got nice views of the Great Mississippi along the way. We camped overnight at Pere Marquette SP. Thursday, 24 August, 2017 We continued north along the Great River Road. We crossed the Illinois River at Hardie on a narrow green steel drawbridge. And, as narrow as the bridge is, one lane was closed for bridge work. ... read more

blog 08-26-17 Bison ! We woke to the fog shorouding the mountains and the air filled with mist that felt like droplets. So strange to see a desert climate in fog. We walked the dogs, and packed the fence, chairs and rug, secured every thing inside and proceeded to the dump area. I took some pictures while we waited our turn and Ginnie hooked up the car. I have not attempted to do the car yet, soon though. We were on the road and opted to go to Rapid City by way of the back roads. It was a 2 lane 60 mph road that was just a delight to drive. I had been wanting to see Bison for 2 days but they eluded us until this stretch of road. We rounded a bend and there ... read more
