We have to leave Spokane Creek a day earlier than we wanted to, but they were booked for the 4th of July, and we are not planning our stops far enough advance to make reservations at any campgrounds. We wanted to stay in the area for another day to visit Deadwood, S.D., so after we finally got a cell phone signal in Rapid City we called Sturgis and found a campground that had plenty of space, and since we were Passport America members , were able to stay for half price. The name of the campground was BULLDOG CAMPGROUND, kindof fits with us being form Georgia, don't ya think. The people were very friendly and joked about the bulldog thing. ... read more

Today was work day for everyone. Shelby and I blogged the first part of the day, and the Leta and Barbara did the wash and cleaned. That afternoon Shelby and I cooked on the grill for the travel days ahead of us. We grilled two whole chickens, a rack of ribs to be eaten on the 4th because you have to have ribs on the 4th, pork roast to be made into pulled pork, Johnsonville Brats, and cheeseburgers for supper that night.... read more

Today we took the ride through the Wildlife Loop at Custer State Park, the second largest in the US with 72,000 acres. Saw buffalo (tatanka), antelope, and wild donkeys/mules. One of the buffalo looked at me as if he thought I owed him money :-). After that we rode to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Some one at the park said it was paying to have the opportunity to shop, so we did not go in. On the way back to the RV Park we rode the Needles Highway with some spectacular rock formations. Once back at Spokane Creek RV Park.... read more

Saw the Borglum Museum (sculptor of Mount Rushmore). Found an interesting fact, Borglum actually started the carving at Stone Mountain, GA. Then we toured Mount Rushmore. Came back to the site and grilled steaks, relaxed, and enjoyed a quite evening at the motorhome watching the movie "Australia". Neighbor in the park made the statement that we were really roughing it - sitting outside watching... read more

Today traveled from Wall, SD to Spokane Creek Campground, Keystone, SD. Arrived after an uneventful day, set up, and had some of Jack's wonderful chicken dumplings. Iron Mountain Road rivals The Tail of the Dragon in Fontana, North Carolina in the number of curves per mile and also has switchbacks which change your driving direction by 180 degrees.... read more

Left Wall after making repairs to motor home, and having breakfast. We have a short haul today, only about 75 miles, but will take some time due to the terrain. Had to find alternate route into Spokane Creek Campground due to narrow and low underpasses. Shelby and I decided we did not want convertible RV's.... read more

Before leaving Deadwood yesterday, we stopped to see one more Kevin Costner attraction. Costner created an amazing museum as a memorial to the Bison entitled the Story of the Bison complete with bronze sculptures. We then travelled to our home for the next 4 days, Holy Smoke Resort in Keystone, SD. After checking in, we headed to see the Rushmore Borglum Story Museum. A fantastic collection of items that tell the story of Gutzon Borglum's life. A little know fact is that Borglum spent several years in San Antonio in the 1920's and at least one of his sculptures still exists there close to the Witte Museum. His studio was in the Mill Race building in Brackenridge Park next to the golf clubhouse. BTW, that very building was restored by Joe Stubblefield & Richard Mogas in ... read more

I am back home from my 10 day road trip. After finishing our second day in Yellowstone, we headed back East. We stopped at Devil's Tower, Mt. Rushmore, Wall Drug, Badlands, and Souix Falls, before going South to St. Louis and ultimately home. We had a good time- it was a lot of driving though! And I get car sick sometimes being in a car, so if I wasn't napping, I was driving. But we saw so much stuff- lots of cities and parks and wildlife. I got to spend 9 days of nonstop time with Damon and Shaun (not always the best thing) before they both leave this week. Shaun snores like nothing I've ever heard before, so I'm glad to be back in my snore free room without two boys (it's sometimes hard having ... read more

Today was supposed to just be a driving day, but that changed quickly as we got closer to our target of western South Dakota. The first third of the state was boring - it reminded me a lot of rural southern Minnesota, which itself looks like most of Iowa, western Illinois, Indiana, Ohio.... You get the point. But then the scenery changed rapidly. We were transported to a new world where the farms gave way to rolling green hills and picturesque sights. What a change! We also saw our first New Jersey car in Sioux Falls when we stopped for a short lunch break. Strangely enough, they had connections to Lake Hopatcong too! It's funny who you can meet as you drive across the country. As we continued driving, we decided to take a short detour ... read more
