There is something wonderful about cooking meat, no matter what the animal. First, there is the trip to the grocery store. I head to the frosty aisle, with the humdrum of concealed air conditioning gently rattling the racks. Which animal, and which cut? There is the careful, nearly methodical scanning of the eyes, as if somewhere in the pile of eerily wet styrofoam there is the Magical Piece of Meat, which has issued forth from a free-roaming animal that was not fed the the powder of its forefathers and was not slaughtered in a warehouse straight out of The Jungle. I look every time anyway. There is the almost negligible slaughter that waits on the kitchen countertop, once to separate what gets cooked now from what gets cooked later, and once to chop up the meat ... read more

I can no longer write like I use to. In the tortured, experimental style of my earlier posts I see a zeal for life that no longer manifests itself in the sparse and often thoughtless rambles that I toss out more out of guilt for my languishing site that out of any inspired subject matter. In a word, my Xanga, like myself, is all ennui, all the time. I feel that if I can unscrew my scalp and run my hand along the gray folds of my once febrile brain I will find nothing but the cold hum of routine machinery. Cook. Eat. Study. Get a job. Even recreational reading has not brought me the pleasure it once did. Even worse, I am too lazy to find other stimuli. The New York Times website takes too ... read more

Last night I went to a Bruce Springsteen concert in Asbury Park New Jersey. The concert was the last in a four concert series that were deemed “rehearsal shows”. All the money that was profited from the four concerts is going to certain charities and organizations in Asbury Park. For those who are not familiar with Asbury Park, it is a run down and abandoned beach town, which was once a very popular boardwalk and vacation spot years ago. Unfortunately it fell victim to race riots in the late 60’s and 70’s and has not been the same since. Bruce Springsteen is releasing an album covering the songs of folk singer Pete Seger and other folk classics. With a 17 piece band which includes a horn section, viola’s, stand up bass, banjo, organs, and accordions; ... read more

No matter how you feel or what is going on in your life their is a song or some type of music you can listen to that makes you feel good. Like right now I am doing my homework and I am not in that great of a mood but my music is giving me some type entertainment. When people are sad they put some type of ballad on to help them get over the blues. Or if its the weekend and your getting ready to go out you play music to get everybody excited. Almost every where anybody goes music is played. For example, Weddings, Funerals, Resturants, Bars, Dormroom ETC. Before football games when I hear the National Anthem it gets me so excited to play. Some people use music to put them to sleep ... read more

The week before easter break, i went to daytona beach with the cheerleading team and we competed in the NCA college national cheerleading competition. this was our first year going to nationals and we did so well. We made it to the finals and we placed 12th out of 26 times from all over the country. Even though 12th seems not great, we were up against some cheerleading teams whose cheerleaders get full scholarships and compete all year long without cheering at games. We do not get any money to cheer here and we cheer for football and basketball as well. We were really proud of ourselves. We were also able to spend a whole day on the beach when we were done competing. It was 90 degrees and absolutly beautiful. During the competition, there were ... read more

I had a panic attack last Monday. My parents went to Boston with my sister to look at colleges, so my boyfriend had to drive me to the train station to come back to school. And he is really stupid when he drives sometimes. We were on a three-lane highway, at least 5 miles from the exit, and he was in the right lane repetitively slamming on the breaks and complaining about how people didn't know how to drive because he didn't notice that we were in the merge lane and all the "slow" drivers had just gotten onto the highway and hadn't sped up all the way yet. Anyway, I kept thinking to myself "everything is probably falling out of my bag. I should check to make sure I have everything when I get there." ... read more

in history class the other day, prof. sena was explaining the changing trends in leisure activities over time. i started thinking about the fact that people were beginning to go to dances in the early 1900s durng their spare time. some people were against women going to these dances because it promoted close contact with men. i was thinking about that time compared to now. i was on my way to my seventh formal of the year, when i started thinking about it...what would those people think of formals today? in the early 1900s dresses were much more conservative and there was a lot of distance kept between men and women while they were dancing. dances were actually dances...now, loud music, flashing lights, and alcohol...it seems like it's more of a necessity than a leisure activity ... read more

It seems to me that technology is making it easier for people to become rich these days. For example, I was reading a Rolling Stone magazine the other day and stumbled upon an article that deals with Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of "The Facebook" The Facebook is a website exclusively limited to colleges around the country and now the world I think. The Facebook enables students to have a page displaying personal information and interests about themselves and allows other college students to see it. Since the start of the facebook a couple of years ago it has risen in popularity and has become the 4th most visited website in the world now. It is also estimated at being a 1 billion dollar business. Mark Zuckerberg is only 21 years old, the head CEO of ... read more

Coming from a privileged background, should we feel guilty? Does it matter how we were brought up? How should we act towards our talents or good qualities? Should we be modest and play down our attributes so not to appear better than other people? This quote explains that we are afraid of being powerful and wonderful in a way, but says that we have every right to be. "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" -Nelson Mandela We should use our talents and skills to help people, and not be ashamed or feel ... read more

The previous blog post about the overhead projector being an excellent means of informing a class, is not entirely true. While it still holds a creative place in my heart, it does withhold its information when it suddenly decides to stop working. The other day when it ironically stopped working made me chuckle on the inside because the week before I was talking about how great it was. My initial reaction was denial, "No! This projector can't not work." Followed by anger, "Ah, this stupid projector, now we won't be able to see Professor Sena's work." Followed by a saddistic feeling, "Well, this is my golden oppertunity to write about technological dependence in the classroom. Not only in this class, but in other classes, professors and students use power point. While this seems like a good ... read more
