Trip - 11 Days Yes, normal people do not "test pack" 11 days ahead! But.....with only suitcase of 50 pounds allowed and a trip of 18 days to plan for, it seems a good idea to test pack and weigh. The first test shows plenty of room and 25 pounds to spare. Then, there is the variable weather factor: could be cool and rainy or warm. I see that my renewed passport will arrive here by next Thursday which is a relief. My feeble excuse for that debacle is that I am unable to open the safe in which the passport lives. I saw a woman recently who had a t-shirt on reading "I know it isn't your fault, but I'm blaming you anyway." I guess I have to blame the safe. ... read more

It is amazing what the body can do when the MIND is able. As most of my readers know, I spent a year traveling and teaching in Gambia. I got back to the US last July, and I spent almost a year in culture shock, bordem, and depression. I thought life was boring if it wasn't spent overseas; useless, and a burden. I had days that I couldn't seem to find the strength or will to get out of bed, because I thought I sold my soul to corporate America. Caught in a tailspin of confusion and doubt, I decided to end the cycle with a brutal "fake it until you make it" policy. I vowed to keep my attitudes and my thoughts positive, even through the extremly hard times when all I wanted to do ... read more

Thanks to all loyal readers who have inspired me to keep blogging, despite my lack of interesting travel. My last blog posts were about my life in The Gambia, and although I have been settled down into a "mundane" suburban sprawl for about a year, I have realized that life can be interesting anywhere you live it. I have decided to continue my blog, in efforts to show others, and make myself believe, that life is spectacular, interesting, and funny as hell wherever you live. After all, "Life is not a destination, but a journey". ... read more

Tuesday, 9 June (Capitol KOA to PhiladelphiaWest Chester KOA): We left the Capitol KOA a bit after 8am and along the way to the Philadelphia /West Chester KOA (93 miles), we called the Herrs Snack Food Factory to schedule a tour at 10am. The tour was pretty neat, informative, and free. They make a variety of chips, pretzels, nachos, and popcorn, but only distribute as far south as North Carolina. Near the end of the tour, we all go to try some ruffle-type chips right out of the overn… yum! They also gave us a free bag. It was a great deal, especially being free. We arrived at the Philadelphia/West Chester KOA (hereafter referred to as the Philly KOA) just after noon and even though their computer was down and check-in time was normally 2pm, they ... read more

Obviously, we have returned home. I cannot believe how quickly one month can pass. I am still pinching myself in wonder of all we have seen and done. It has been such a wonderful experience - an opportunity not to have missed. This last entry may be difficult for some to read so be forewarned that it is not for everyone. I have learned so much on this trip and this was the most difficult lesson of all. The one event that continues to haunt me is the time spent in Auschwitz and Birkenau. I don't know that the world will ever come to terms, if that is even slightly possible, with the history of that time. I know that it will certainly never leave me. There were several facts that I learned that I doubt ... read more

We are getting ready to go. Our plan is to take only carry ons. So, we will have four suit cases and four back pack size bags. I checked us in at 7:08 - exactly 24 hours before our flight. US Air had changed our reservation. First, Alex and I were on one new reservation while Elaine and Peter were on the original reservation. More importantly, they had switched us from four seats in a row to four middle seats. After half an hour on the phone, nothing changed. They just told me to see if they could switch it at the airport. Argh. The plan for the animals is as follows: -Sue, Alasane, and CHris have the Frogs -Will has the Gecko -Roger, Jessica, and Roland have the Hamster -Several people (Fred, Usha, Carl, and ... read more

Hello friends, family, and those of you who are curious where life is taking me, After filling yet another few pages in my passport, and people asking for pictures, I decided to start a blog that everyone would be able to visit, and I would no longer risk missing people on my epic mass emails. I am currently working at EPA in Philadelphia, commuting and re-establishing to myself that the west coast is where I belong. As much as I am enjoying the fireflies and thunderstorms (a treat for a Washingtonian), I am missing the mountains and ocean. My time here has allowed me to focus on where I want my life to go after graduation, and that clarity is wonderful. I am delving into massive amounts of research for a masters program in coastal management ... read more

Are you happy you did it? Moria: Absolutely. It was an excellent way to spend six months, and the lessons I learned were priceless. Kate: Yes, of course. Do you have any regrets? Moria: Nope. Kate: I regret not doing yoga in India. Who knows when I will have the chance again? What was your favorite place/country? Moria: We can't choose one. Sorry. We can't even choose a favorite country from each region. They each have something unique to offer. Kate: I concur. Did you get on each other's nerves? Moria: Yes, all the time. We got into a few big fights, most of which were mentioned in previous posts. We frequently snapped at each other too, but when you're traveling with someone for six months, you learn to get over things within a 15-minute time ... read more
