Our last day on the road we just drove from Sarajevo to Rijeka, then the next day took the bus to Trieste and the train to Venice, then the next morning departed for an uneventful trip home. Geo: 35.5261, -98.7072Erin wanted to be at the airport by 9 a.m. so we picked her up and got there quickly. After dropping her off, we went back to our hotel for breakfast and to check out leaving about 11:30. We went to the Outlet Shoppes to look around and picked up a pair of gloves for our winter trip. Stopped for lunch at BJs just outside the mall. We left to go to Weatherford about 12:30 and called Brad and Jeanine to let them know that we were on the way. It is so nice to spend time with them, friends since about 1976. We don't get together often enough, but I always find it so easy to be around them. Wish we could see them more.During the afternoon, we went to the Stafford Air ... read more

Geo: 35.472, -97.5203Soon after we were up and had enjoyed a nice breakfast in the hotel, we went to the Saddleback to see who was there to visit with. We enjoyed talking with a number of people, and Phil was able to talk to Aunt Effie and Uncle R.D. as well as Sally about some of the genealogy information he has gathered. We went with Erin to lunch at Billy Simms BBQ place. It's in a strip mall just down Meridian from the hotel. Delicious food and friendly service. Took a short break in our room before going back to spend the afternoon and evening with the Allen clan. Dinner was the usual group thing at the Saddleback.... read more

Geo: 35.472, -97.5203Checked out of The Highland this morning sadly disappointed in our stay there. It should have been a nice place with at least a little bit of personality. Unfortunately, all I will remember are these two points. 1. The person who was fixing the plates for breakfast had a big beard that was not covered while he worked. You can be sure that I inspected my plate for hair before I started eating. 2. The WiFi never worked for the entire two-night stay. Phil needed to finish up his class using the software he has loaded on his laptop connected to the internet, but he was not able to access it. We have a reservation at the same hotel in October since Phil's high school reunion will take place there. I don't know if ... read more

I love Oklahoma for some reason I just really enjoy learning everything about the Indians. We went to the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee today. It's a small museum and really inexpensive $2 but very informative. It tells the story of the five Tribes being Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole and Choctaw that were removed from the homes to Indian territory in Oklahoma in the 1800's. Their journey was known as the "Trail of Tears." These five tribes formed villages, farms and created a government thus the name "civilized." The art work and items shown in the museum were all created by local artisans.... read more

Staying in Thackerville which is just over the border from Texas. Great campground Red River RV Park. Went to a really cute zoo today in Leonard Park called The Frank Buck Zoo. It's really a botanical garden with animals. Inexpensive and really interesting. Unfortunately I can't seem to find the pics. UGH!!!!!... read more

And the very next day... We were driven on a road trip to Pawnee for a fun-filled day of firsts. Firstly, we met our 'soon to be' new travelling companions at their ranch. After quenching our thirst (it was 98 degrees Fahrenheit) with gallons of iced water, we discovered they had hummingbirds just outside their window. I was stunned to find that hummingbirds are so tiny and so very fast. Whenever I had seen photos of these 'fastest little birds' they had always looked much bigger. The smallest extant bird species is a hummingbird. This 5cm bee hummingbird weighs less that 2.5g. (thanks wikipedia). I was just so pleased I managed to get some photos of the little hummers although I hope to get the chance to improve my captures in future sightings. Next stop: Pawnee ... read more

Hello from Oklahoma City! Today was a short day, only 260 miles. I left Amarillo later than planned and it was HOT. I mean ball-meltingly hot. Oklahoma is an extremely flat, windy hot place. The winds weren't consistent, rather they came in gusts from different directions. This is the worst possible scenario for a motorcycle rider. Being violently pushed and pulled in different directions and having to make constant split-second course corrections is draining at best and terrifying at worst. Imagine this scenario: You are moving forward at 80mph in the left lane and the wind is coming hard from the right. In order to continue going straight you must lean the bike into the wind as though you are turning. Now imagine that the wind either stops or switches direction. What happens? Well, if you ... read more

Learnt something new about the iPhone today. While it can be on mute you still get that wake up call. What you don't get on mute are emergency alerts. At 12:41am there was a tornado alert in Springdale to take shelter. I woke up at some point hearing thunder, but just grunted and went back to sleep rather than seek the basement of the Quality Inn. I suspect this Inn had bed bugs so a night in the basement may have been worse than the tornado. When I got out to the bike in the morning it was still standing, not even twisted around. The sky was crystal blue and the air fresh as is true after a good overnight rain. It was the start of a 70/70 day. A perfect 70F and maintaining a speed ... read more

After yesterday’s long drive we both felt really tired today. We had bananas and a muesli bar for breakfast and then headed off in our car. We drove about 11km to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Whist it was not too far away we actually had to go on 3 separate interstate highways just to get there. Very tricky stuff early in the day navigating these massive interchanges. The museum cost $12.50 each but we had a $2- discount coupon in one of the brochures we picked up yesterday so that helped. When we went in one of the volunteers had a chat with us to explain where to go and he said it would take about 2 hours to go around. The first section was an area of paintings where they show off ... read more
