Oklahoma and it's 106!!
Published: August 1st 2011North America » United States » Oklahoma » Oklahoma CityLeft Amarillo around 11am and it was pretty warm even then. Did some route 66 then I40 but had to stop more than usual due to dehydration! Stopped off in the small irish town of Shamrock! I know, in the middle of the Texas panhandle!! As well as loads of irish pubs, the town also has a wonderfully preserved 20's Gas Station. Stopped in other small towns on the route such as Elk city for gas and El Reno for lunch. 270 miles later we were in Oklahoma! Found a motel with a pool (priority!) and decided to rest and stay for two days. This was a good idea as the temperature was rising; not good for us wearing leathers and black helmets! It was great to lock up the Harley, get the shorts on and ... read more
#2—Where Everything is OK…
Published: August 2nd 2011North America » United States » Oklahoma » Oklahoma City7/27/11 to 7/31/11 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma The drive from Roswell to Oklahoma City was a pretty flat and kind of dead 472 miles; lots of unwatered grass. Driving through the northern tip of Texas offered variety in the form of grazing horses and cows and the oh-so-unpleasant aromas that accompany them. I did get a little excited when I drove by a roadside marker noting the Chisholm Trail. “I teach about that!” I thought to myself. But there was nothing to show for it except a bent up sign and textbook details I couldn’t even remember. The highlight of this leg of my road trip was spending time with my cousin Shannon and her two amazing kids. Shannon and I last saw each other 25-30 years ago, but the initial bear hug when we first laid ... read more
We are continuously trying to advance after taking note that more than 1700 miles are still left. Avoided stopping in New Mexico for a stay to heat index and fire. Arrived in Amarillo, TX with our sights on eating a large piece of steak but gave it up after noticing that local city streets are hard to maneuver around and that our expected seating time was nearly into the following day after having arrived at 10 a.m. Crossed into Oklahoma and also better weather. At least until we arrived in Elk City. We were quite some distance away from our destination in OKC so the locals suggested plugging into the free power outlets found throughout the I-40 in overflow casino or city parking lots. Plugged in and spent the night there trying to cool off and ... read more

We left the campground reasonably early to get to Washita Battlefield National Historic Site. They called it a battle, but it was a massacre. General Custer commanded his men to kill the native American men and all 800 of their horses and round up the women and children. The Cheyenne were in their winter encampments and were peaceful. It was very difficult to explain to the boys how something this horrible was ordered by our government. At the end of the visitor center, though, we learned that Stone Forehead warned Lt General Custer in 1869 not to hurt or lie to the Cheyenne again or he would die; he did, at Little Bighorn, in 1876. The rest of the day was spent driving west toward Santa Fe. We didn't make great time, but got to the ... read more
Oklahoma City and Rose State College
Published: June 29th 2011North America » United States » Oklahoma » Oklahoma CityLast night we made it to Rose State College, east of Okalahoma City. I met Brian at the Professional Training Center at 6:00 PM. Thankfully he was working late that night. We discussed Boston Reed programs for an hour while Terry and Graycee relaxed in some more shade - 103 degrees. Rose State is VERY interested in several courses and we will have our first partner in Oklahoma!! This year I also brought New Hampshire on board. I love it when we get new states! Our challenge is trying to eat healthy. With a dog in the car - everything is drive up fast food. We stop at grocery stores for deli meats and fruit and try to avoid french fries. Think I'll try a salad at McDonalds. I discovered that I left my makeup at ... read more

Day 15 - Through Tornado Alley to Home
Published: May 30th 2011North America » United States » Oklahoma » TulsaWe woke up later than we expected this morning -- about 7:30. We didn't want to set the alarm because we were so tired last night. We got up and hit the road right away. A couple of hours into the trip we went through Joplin, Missouri, where the F5 tornado hit 3 days earlier. We stopped in the town to fuel up. The hotel parking lots were full of displaced residents, and people in the mini-mart were talking about what they were doing to try to salvage some belongings. The streets were busy with utility company trucks and clean-up crews working to get the city put back together. The skies were overcast and we hit occasional light rain on the way home, but nothing bad. Kevin likes driving when it's cloudy because it's cooler and ... read more
After months of business planning, countless international phone calls, a business plan competition, and an unhealthy amount of caffeinated beverages, the EYEChina team will depart from Norman, OK en route to Hong Kong at 0600 hrs from Will Rogers International Airport.
