Today I complete my circuit of the three Cs of Ohio, Cincinnati. On first glance, the city reminded me of Pittsburgh. Like Pittsburgh, it was founded where several rivers intersect the Ohio River. It is surrounded by hills. It became a trading center and then an industrial powerhouse. While Pittsburgh made steel, Cincinnati made machine tools and soap. The city became wealthy from all this activity, and plowed some of it into civic improvements. One of the most dramatic is Union Station. Union Station The train station was built in 1933 to replace six different train stations around the city. Notable architect Paul Cret designed an art deco masterpiece which is now listed on the National Re... read more

This weekend I flew to Cincinnati, Ohio to see my dad's side of the family. I hadn't seen any of them since I had been back from Germany so I was really excited and I'm glad the weekend went well. We did a lot. On one rainy day we went to the Cincinnati Museums, which are now located in the old Cincinnati train station. We went for the special Cleopatra Exhibition, which is only in 5 cities in the US! Cinci is the smallest of the cities where it's being held. It was a really fantastic exhibit. I had been to an exhibit like it here a few years ago about the Titanic and they were both very entertaining and educational. We were given audio guides and the freedom to walk through the exhibit at our ... read more

Ross and I had a great breakfast at McGorry's before heading east towards Philadelphia. Had a great run along the Interstate at 75/80mph. Just keeping up with the traffic!!! It was a warm humid day but we did the 280miles arriving in Cincinnati around 3.30pm. Contacted Dave and was given directions to his house. It was great to catch up with Dave after a gap of 40+ years. After lots of joshing and a bit to eat Dave's wife, Shari, drove us into Cincinnati to watch the labour day fireworks over the Ohio River. They reckon that the fireworks are one of the best in the world, but not as good as the Sydney New Year fireworks. After the fireworks we went to a local pub, Allyn's, for a few drinks. Had a great time. Two ... read more

Our final weekend in Cincinnati has been lovely :) We arrived back at about 6pm on Friday night. We went to 'The Pub' for tea which is a 'typical' British pub... It was full of very loud drunk Americans and again the staff were wearing kilts (not as short as in the Tilted Kilt in Chicago). Saturday we all had a lie in (Rob managed to surface at about 2 minutes to midday). We then went back to Applebee's for lunch before heading to the cinema to see Toy Story 3 in 3D. WOW what a brilliant film. The cinema was really new with the comfiest seats ever - they even rocked! We saw some people buying buckets, literally buckets, of popcorn and coke. Just plain ridiculous. Saturday evening we went to the Cincinnati Gardens to ... read more

We're currently in the departure lounge at Cincinnati airport waiting for our flight to Chicago - we're very excited :) The last few days in Cincy have been more chilled. After the match on Saturday, which Rob was rather disappointed by, we went off to see Harry Connick Junior at the Riverbend PNC Pavillion. This is a covered outdoor arena and Saturday was the hottest (in the 90's) and most humid day yet so at first we were all really uncomfortable and pretty much everyone there was using any paper they had to create a fan. Harry was amazing - he sang lots of his songs and some great covers and also added in bits of comedy and stories about his family etc. He picked on people who were sat at the front and called one ... read more

We woke yesterday with the hope that the sun would shine so we could have a wander round Cincinnati, but it rained. When it rains here it tends to be in short heavy bursts with breaks in between, and that's exactly what it did when we began our afternoon out, we had a great lunch at an Italian restaurant called Brio's but while we were walking over the 'purple people bridge' back to the car it tipped it down and we got soaked! We therefore went back to Adventure Lane to dry off and on our journey back Zig showed us a few of the sights. When Ali got home from work the weather had cleared up so we went 'down town' to check out some free Reggae music in Fountain Square (Rob likes reggae). Before ... read more

Yesterday we went to Cincinnati zoo. It was a really lovely day without being too hot. Our first port of call was the cheetah encounter where we got to see various cats, a red river hog (called Sir Francis Bacon), a dog and 2 cheetahs doing tricks for their trainers. We were impressed. To beat the rush we had an early lunch of hot dogs and fries and Rob was very pleased to be able to have a beer with his (Rob likes beer). Other highlights included a chat with the rhino keeper (Rob loves rhinos), the manatees (lettuce eating seal/dog type creatures) and the lemur talk. We managed to persuade Caleb and Ethan to remain interested by feeding them pizza and ice-cream. On the way to the zoo we drove through an area called Avondale. ... read more

Well we've made it. Saturday was a very long day. Our lovely friend Carla picked us up at 4am to take us to the airport. The plane that took us from Newcastle to Paris was only a baby plane with 50 seats - it was fine though and on time. Charles de Gualle airport was mad and although we had an hour and a half between flights we only had time to grab a quick drink and a croissant (hurrah) on the way to the gate. The plane that took us from Paris to Cincinnati didn't have individual TV's so we had to sit through Valentines Day, Dear John, Young Victoria and 500 days of summer on the big screen - Rob nearly threw himself out of the emergency exit! The only noteworthy things about the ... read more
