We’re at JFK and we’ll be boarding our flight to Rome in a few minutes. We had a great time here in NYC. Last night, we went to dinner at a place called Quality Meats, right off 5th Avenue near Central Park. Liilana said she was in the mood for meat after 3 weeks on a boat with a vegan counsellor. So a friend suggested Quality Meats, and it really was great. It was a steak house, but with great atmosphere, service and really fantastic preparation of all different kinds of meat. And the evening was even more pleasurable because Raja was able to join us for dinner.
Raja is a surgeon and is very smart. Even better, he’s just fun to be with, and has a really different perspective on the world. We had a ... read more

Is getting to the airport over an hour before your flight early enough? Apparently not. So standing in line to check in they closed the flight and cut me off among 10 others. Bottom line is I'm here at La Guardia flying standby all day hoping to get to ft lauderdale at somepoint today so I can connect to Guatemala tomorrow morning. Crossing my fingers that my mind, body, and bags all make it. Highlight of my day? Airline staff to passenger, "whoa whoa whoa just because I have a mustache doesn't mean I speak Spanish" More updates to come, right now I'm just enjoying the wifi compliments to my new subscription to Boing! Oh and if you have skype (david.wodka) or twitter (@dwodka) add me!... read more

I've wanted to visit Athens for quite some time but it never did work out. This year for spring break, we were looking at a few places to visit. Topping the list were Berlin, Dublin, Brussels, and Tokyo. My wife really wanted to go to a warmer destination so I also looked into Lima. Our flights to Athens are always full so I did not even look into going there. I was browsing various flights and to my surprise, the Athens flight actually looked very good for non-revenue travel and so the planning began. I would reach a few travel milestones on this trip so I was very excited. I would pass the one million mile mark for flights taken and I would get my "official" 100th Hard Rock Cafe visit. I reached 100 cafes last ... read more

Well, I'm just sitting at JFK using my 20 minutes of free wi-fi...I got to RDU at 8 and had no problem getting through security, though the security guard asked if I was pregnant before they had me go through the body scanner...that just boosted my confidence. The flight was interesting from RDU. We had a flight attendant that really liked to talk. I also found out that I forgot one of my textbooks at home! Yay me! Hopefully someone will let me borrow theirs...it will be a long time before it would reach me if my parents mailed it. I had to take a shuttle from LGA to JFK. That was interesting. The New York traffic was so exciting, and the shuttle driver went on an angry rant about this guy that started to honk ... read more

After an intense five hour rehearsal I decided to reward myself with an excursion in the evening to a dance club (yes, life does go on after 51!). The club came highly recommended by various publications and even has a "splashy" website so I decided that all of my newly acquired purchases (rewards for hard work?) needed to be displayed. First of all, club life tends to begin around 11:00 or so. Usually, in my normal existence back home, the only person I am sharing intimate time at that hour with is Peter Mansbridge and the 11:00 news (with a customary session of yawns, drools and eventual pass out on the couch)...so this was going to be a stretch! Not so...from the outside it appeared quite non-descript, but when I entered the club it was almost ... read more

Day 93 By the time we arrive on a stinking hot morning in new York I don’t believe Philip has been more tired in his life its another 6 hour flight across the states and another three hour time different we have hardly adjusted from the mammoth flight from Sydney and have also crammed in another flight with to san Francisco with a stressful day at LAX a half marathon and a 13 mile walk. We had no sleep on the plane and with blisters rotten toe nails and a thigh strain were half tempted just to keep going on and come home and that isn’t half the story. Dragging our bag thru rush hour on the subway to our next destination in queens is a task it is actually the hottest July on record in ... read more

Just a quick update for today, our last before we fly to Las Vegas tomorrow afternoon. We had a lovely day walking around the university in Princeton, visiting historical Morrisville and fighting the Manhattan traffic to get to our hotel in Queens which is near JFK Airport for tomorrow's flight. Princeton was a really picturesque town with a beautiful university campus. It helped that the sun was shining and at around 26 degrees, it wasn't too hot to walk around and take it slowly. Rachel says she wishes she had come to Princeton University instead of Aberystwyth (I'm not sure why!!!) as she loved the architecture and the tranquility of the place. We drove for an hour to Morrisville, New Jersey which was the place where George Washington lived during the winter in a couple of ... read more

i'm chilling at jfk with a coke and a pizza the size of my palm. on the way in i heard the sniffles of a korean family while they were saying goodbye. it was kind of sad. i have another hour until the flight begins boarding. i really hate the wait. if they had beds at the airport where i could sleep until the next flight i wouldn't mind. one time i slept for 12 hours on the floor at heathrow. the next day i went to an orientation at the school i was going to in holland for the summer. i could tell by the look on everyone's faces that i reeked of airport floor. the smell of feet that have stepped on the urine-filled streets of the world, all in one airport, all on ... read more

Thought I was playing "ready-or-not" last night, but I was happy with how things turned out this morning, and think I have everything I need in the bags. Wouldn't want to have to search for anything over there...it's a big country, and they just might not have my size :) Christmas treat/dinner was an oversized piping hot Hebrew National hot dog with mustard and relish...Yummy! No place better than New York for those. Think of me as you bite into your veggie burger, chicken, curried goat, or oxtail. My bus has arrived. Will go make myself comfortable at the window seat "L"...it's a very wide ride. Merry Christmas.... read more

I can't believe I forgot about it, but the day I went to Central Park and FAO Schwarz I also visited The Cathedral Church of St John the Divine . It was amazing. It's a massive building, apparently the size of two american football pitches and the statue of liberty could comfortably fit under the done (without her pedestal). It's unfinished and looks like it won't be finished until 2050 due to various funding crises and a big fire but it is remarkable, not only for it's vastness but for the beautiful stained glass windows and peaceful mini chapels (my terminology might not be quite correct) coming off the main room. They do a lot of work in the community and have the National Aids Memorial there too. I thought it was a fantastic place and ... read more
