Better late than never! We got the bus back down from Toronto, through Niagara Falls, Buffalo and down to New York. We managed to make our way out to Queens and found our YMCA, where we would spend the next 5 nights and the last 5 nights of our trip. New York was hot but not unbearably so like it was in Washington D.C., our room was fine and there was a gym in the hostel too which was nice. We spent our first 2 days seeing the sights, brooklyn bridge, statue of liberty, empire state building (we went to the top of the roc for that) and we also got the statten island ferry. The last 2 days we spent shopping! We spent an entire day in the 9 storeys macys in new york, we ... read more

Dear Friends, Family, Casual acquaintances, and Strangers who might be reading this, In 5 days I am taking a 13-hour flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina by myself. I'll be there for three months doing volunteer work with LIFE Argentina, an organization that works with children in socially marginalized and impoverished areas of Buenos Aires. I've never traveled alone before. I've never been to South America before. I've never been out of the country for more than two weeks at a time, and I've certainly never worked in a Spanish-speaking country before. It's a lot of firsts for me, but I'm feeling beyond ready for this experience and I can't wait to completely immerse myself in something totally different from everything I am used to. I have a lot of goals for the trip, and I thought ... read more

Ok.. I arrived at around 12? and tried to find the subway.. I took a subway from JFK airport thru two other subways all a part of the NYC system of subways and got to my La Quinta Hotel in Queens NY! I'm on the 5th floor(top floor) and it is facing west towards the island of Manhattan(where all the famous NYC landmarks are) which is only a few minutes subway ride. I finally was able to hook up to the internet after trying to track down a cord. I also found a tanning place to get a bronze action going. Now I'm just finished getting ready and going to go to an authentic Queens New York City Italian Restaurant... not really sure where.. but I'll find one!!! Then I'm going to track down a Long ... read more

I just ran across the street for my first NYC dinner experience! Daisy's Restaurant‎ 3941 Queens Blvd I had a few dinner drinks and "house ravioli bolognese" (basically ravioli in a meat sauce). It was delicious! Plus the staff was AWESOME! The bartender (George Chavez (half italian/hispanic)) was the coolest bartender. He gave me the low down on what to see and what to do(pretty much all of the NYC basic landmarks).... the rest of the wait stuff was also nice and friendly. I spent some time just talking with all of them and enjoyed a wonderful meal. Apparently, George was a "road manager" for the Shirelle's back in the day.. told me a few stories over my after dinner sippage. After George threw in the last drink on the house, I tabbed out from "Daisy's" ... read more

So, Derek is as Melissa's house at the moment. I'm chatting with Meg, Manny is playing Mirror's edge, and Scott is about 1 hour from touchdown at JFK. I have yet to pack for the trip. I feel that if I pack to early I only remember 75% of what I wanted to bring. In the frenzy of last minute packing, I tend to remember 90% of my belongings. Safe bet is to pack 2 hours before I go to the airport. The "drawing" of our illustrious group of globe trotters is almost complete. This will bring with it raucus cheers, and introspective self-doubt coupled with nervousness about the trip. In the end, we will come to our senses and realize what wonderous adventures are in store for us across the pond we call The Atlantic ... read more

90 minutes until the cab comes to bring us to flying machines. Rock Band was the order of the day. Meg brought Bagels and played a mean bass. Manny talked about loving Scott's mother. Scott cried. Derek secluded himself in the hopes of shaking off his jitters. I made the rounds. Checking the integrity of our crew. Stay tuned, there is a possible report from the airport in your future. Exciting, hardly a good enough word for sitting in a rank terminal for 2 and a half hours. ... read more

Day One Or Welcome to America! Or No Money, No Honey! It was a Sunday the 1st of June when four very tired Irish girls, me, Denise, Caitríona and Nettie, gathered in Dublin airport to start the summer of a lifetime. I won't bore everyone with the details of the flight as nothing interesting really happened (although one air-hostess did call me 'Sir'...) and we arrived in New York without much panic. Everything that has happened since we stepped off the plane have been absolutely amazing. Caitríona's uncle, Dave, collected us from the airport, a man of unfailing energy and helpfulness. He welcomed us to America, then took all our luggage, piled it onto one of those trolley yokes (remember, this is 4 girls worth of trans-Atlantic luggage - A LOT) powered out of JFK ... read more
