New York City Day 77 - Monday 01.06.2009 So if you remember (many weeks ago now) we are at the HI-New York and the reception we had last night was crap. Check out photos of our new place and cats... Well, we're in the process of moving our every-growing mound of worldly goods ten blocks Uptown. And this time it's for 6 whole months! (Talk about semi-permanence). We've scored a 1-bedroom apartment, fully furnished with an esoteric mix of Lonely Planet Guides, starfish, Buddha heads, a mighty flat screen cable TV, and 2 cats: Winston and Muffin. Woke up quite early yesterday (even for me) and got the subway into Manhattan whilst eating food I’d purchased in London and wasn’t really supposed to have brought into the country. I got off the train at 14th and 6th to do some sightseeing. Unfortunately I walked the wrong way for 20 minutes but did manage to see The First Presbyterian Church incase anyway cares. I started early from Journal square, Jersey to WTC taking the PATH train. I had left out Chinatown and Little Italy from the downtown area yesterday. So I started walking northwest from WTC towards the Brooklyn bridge onwards to Chinatown. It wasnt difficult to find out as almost all the boards, faces, shops started turning Chinese along the canal street. It wasnt exactly breathtaking but amusing. I stopped across a foot rub and back massage center and thought of going in (never had one in my life!). But ditched it (all men masseurs ! would be better in Varanasi I guess). [View Full Entry]

London - 19°c Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean in between one nap and another, and remembering to move my watch forward 5 hours, day 36 became day 37. As not really much of a sleeper anywhere other than a comfortable bed and even then sometimes struggling, I thankfully managed to sleep a fair bit on the flight home thanks in large part to the complete exhaustion that’s caught up with me after such an epic trip in so many ways. With prospects of coming back to USA bleak, I desperately wanted to see New York city before I leave. The 'to do list' had reading a book in Central Park, long exposure shots of Times Square and sky diving in Poconos mountains. I was also looking forward to hiking and camping in Catskill Mountains. I ditched my initial plan of going by Chinatown/Greyhound bus from Chicago, the cheapest mode of travel, as it took almost 24 hours and friends who had done it didnt have anything good to say about it. We got up and headed to the Milford for another sad goodbye… This time it was Lauren’s turn. We said goodbye, to which she replied, “I’ll see you before Christmas!!” Looking forward to it LV!! We left and headed down to the Ground Zero site. It’s a bit odd being there, remembering all the images from that day. The site itself it really big, you can only imagine how tall the towers themselves were. We basically did a lap of the site; you can’t really see much anymore, it’s just a building site now.
