Started with an early breakfast, glad to see that the weather was different from yesterday which was about 93 degrees and poured at the end of the day.Left the hotel and walked to the bike shop, about 10 blocks, got organized, broken into 2 groups. Our group leader was Johanns, orginally from Austria and our sweep (followed at the back to pick up the pieces) Chris, originally from the Finger lakes area of NY, came here to college and never left. Began riding 'in traffic' which was quite harrowing especially at first. Only a couple blocks to Central Park which was better because there were few cars but fast bikes, pedicabs, pedestrians, etc. Stopped frequently for Johanns to give us some background and history. First hour or so, it seemed we walked more than rode. There ... read more

We used the Hop On Hop Off bus as a taxi today, so got on one headed uptown, and got off at the start of Central Park. Walked along the edge of the park to the horse and carriages, plenty lined up today, a bit cooler than Monday. Had a short ride through Central Park, then the carriage has to go out onto 5th Ave in all the traffic to get back to the start - that was a little interesting. Decided to go across to the Plaza Hotel, found the food court downstairs, so sat and had coffee. Time for some (window) shopping along 5th Ave, past all the high end stores (and a few churches), only one we went into was Lindt! Also walked past the Trump Tower (the one he lives in when ... read more

We were undecided today whether to go up the Empire State Building or the Rockefeller Centre - ESB is taller, but further away (would need us to use the bus again, and hard to get back), Top of the Rock (the observation deck of the Rockefeller Centre) is not as tall, has a timed entry (so could be waiting a while) but easier to get to. Had our lazy hats on, so Top of the Rock won! Walked to the main entrance on 50th St, found the ticket desk, they asked did we want to go up straight away, so did not have to come back for a timed entry. Just had to psych myself up for the elevator ride, which goes up to the 67th floor in 42 seconds. Top of the elevator is clear, ... read more

Headed Downtown on the Hop On Hop Off bus today, starting back in Times Square, then past Madison Square Garden, Empire State Building, Macy's, Flatiron building (some of which we had seen last night) and into the financial district. Got off at Trinity Church which is at the start of Wall Street, and close to Ground Zero. It was covered in debris on 9/11. Walked down to the 9/11 Memorial (Ground Zero) to see the waterfalls and reflecting pools that are in the footprint of the Twin Towers. The name of every person who died is inscribed around the edges of the pools, and the staff place a white rose next to a name on that person's birthday. Couid also see One World Trade Centre (the tallest building in the western hemisphere, and the main building ... read more

First day in New York City, we have our Sightseeing Pass, weather forecast is good (except for a possible storm later tonight), and we are off! Called in to the Hop On Hop Off Bus/Sightseeing Pass Office (which is conveniently across the street and 1/2 block down from our hotel) to book ourselves on the night Sightseeing Tour. Then over to the bus stop to start on the Uptown Tour on the Hop On Hop Off Bus. Bus travelled down 8th Ave, through the theatre district, and was supposed to go all the way down the western side of Central Park. Did not realise Central Park is nearly 60 blocks long! It appeared we had a bit of a renegade driver, who thought going down the side of the park wasn't that interesting, so took a ... read more

Banff looked beautiful today in the sunshine as we left to go to Calgary Airport! Bruce drove some of our group (including us) to Calgary, and some were going on the Rocky Mountaineer, including Darcy, the tour guide. Bit of a wait at the airport as other people had earlier flights than us, then our flight was delayed. Landed at Newark airport after a 4 1/2 hour flight, airport transfer was not there (stuck in traffic), so went with a shuttle from the same company. Arrived at our hotel just after midnight, room not as small as we thought it might be, so all good.... read more

"Adventure may hurt you but monotony will kill you" SA 203 was clearly on course as the engines slowed to a gentle whisper, the nose tilted downwards and a state of semi frantic preparation swept through the metal tube. Having the best seats on the plane means you get to look out of a window and clearly visible was a soft pink glow far out. An oval shape to the creeping light of day which should be enough to convince those "Flat Earth" loonies that their theory is wrong. New York evokes many thoughts as it is undoubtedly the capital of planet Earth. Just for a minute ponder on how many books have been written about this city. Both fiction and non fiction. This day was to be over shadowed by the main event happening tonight! But we needed to do something for the day to go bye. So we once again put on our woollies and trudged up towards Central Park and aiming for Nike Town. Needing fuel we stopped by a little eatery by the name of Gregory's and had our selves some warming coffees and toast. We found Nike town and perused the floors of different Nike apparel. Americans not working for tips certainly do not put in the customer service as do their counterparts. Anyway after we waited 20mins for the larger size jumper for Ollie, we realised the correct choice was made. He looked the goods, model material for sure. Bec decided she wanted more culture in the day than a few large sweaty ... read more

No white Christmas as we were hoping for, but it certainly had the cold. Coldest day of the trip so far and we found out that it had actually snowed earlier that morning, just not enough to hang around. Never mind we had ourselves a lovely Christmas lunch planned gifted to us from the English Walkers. The restaurant that was booked was called Bryant Park Grill and it was located in Bryant Park, go figure. so after we did a bit of pressie opening, well watching Ollie open presents, we decided to brave the cold and head to the park a couple of hours earlier to check out the markets, the ice rink and of course another giant Christmas tree. It was indeed cold but Ollie and I warmed up on pretzels and churros while we ... read more

Woke up in the morning with the sound of rain piter patter on the roof.... wait.. no.. same as every other day cause we are in the middle of an apartment building with our window facing an other building about a meter away. So it is raining and it is quite foggy and grey, what better day to go and see the Statue of Liberty from the seat of a Staten Island ferry. Easy cab ride to the ferry terminal with our Indian friend, no change there. The ferry ride consist of half an hour to the island that really has nothing to do there and then off, walk around a circle and get back on for the half an hour return trip. Cool, an hour done and the lady of freedom waved goodbye. From there ... read more
