Tucumcari, New Mexico Technological change hits rural America hard and fast. Take the simple changes in how we travel. Modern vehicles not only go faster, but they are more efficient, traveling further on a gallon of gasoline, which has also become more efficient. And the changes are on the inside too, making hours of travel much easier on the occupants. All of which means that, although they travel more miles, they are stopping less frequently, especially in the towns in-between destinations. Towns like Tucumcari, New Mexico. In the forties, fifties, and sixties, Route 66 went through this town and it was, more or less, a popular stop. You can tell that because of the many motel lodges scattered up and down the main, Route 66, drag. With original names like Cactus and Apache, these motor inns ... read more

Geo: 35.1786, -103.725We were told that senior citizens tend to get up pretty early in the morning so we made sure that we started our first full day on the 65 Years Young Birthday Tour before the crack of dawn and we were in our vehicle at 5:00am. Where we going at this early hour? Well, despite our many years together, DH has not always picked up on my inherent sensitivity and this was a case in point. I had picked the very sedate sport of star gazing the night before but DH was adamant that, for his birthday, we take Dave B for a balloon ride over Albuquerque (home of the world famous Albuquerque Balloon Festival)- this despite the fact that Dave has a well advertised fear of heights (and, as a newly minted senior ... read more

After the large steak dinner last night we were a glutton for punishment and went back this morning for all you can eat buffet. We were pretty hungry after a monster sleep going to bed at 8.30pm! I don't think I've gone to bed that early since I was a kid! We were up at 7.30 and off to the buffet. We ordered pancakes and French toast whilst Kerry had just the pancakes. Whilst they were being cooked we went to the help yourself section and got some bacon, sausage patties, and some scrambled egg. There was the option of the biscuits and gravy which me and Kerry had been intrigued by the whole trip so far. We wanted to try it but it always looks so gross! The 'biscuits' are actually scones with the 'gravy' ... read more

Travels with Snowbirds Tuesday July 9 2013 Texola OK to Cactus RV Park Tucumcari NM The one about the changing topography I got wifi!!!! It’s here!!! Yay!!! Boy it was hot last night. My a/c chugged along, not really cooling Moya down until almost midnight. There was a beautiful breeze, but it was so blooming hot out, it was 92 until 10:00. I put my small oscillating fan on in my bedroom, and fell asleep easily, but it was a fitful night. Two 18 wheelers pulled into the parking lot of the now closed for the night ‘store’. Their lights were on and their engines purred all night. So, between the hum of the a/c, the hum of the fan, the earth moving because of the 2 semi’s engines…….I was vibrating. I welcomed morning. I was ... read more

...its beautiful here, and we are the ONLY ones around! 3.31.13; Woke up alongside Route 40 and drove to Cadillac Ranch. SO MUCH FUN! We added our graffiti to the cars and felt like little kids! A little farther west and we drove on the "old Route 66"- saw an old gas station/pump and thought of you Steve! Then we made our way out to the middle of no where- Conchas Lake, New Mexico. We have no idea where we are headed sometimes- just following our trusty atlas (Thanks Jacks, its been a huge part of the trip). Our campsite is beautiful, overlooking the lake which is a man made lake. We had enjoyed working out, running, biking, relaxing and of course - for Kona SWIMMING!!. Had a yummy Easter dinner- grilled chicken, broccoli and tomato ... read more

Ken got around 6 am. He started getting things put away outside. I got up, he made coffee; Larry and Henna joined us. We enjoyed our morning together and then began getting ready to leave. We stopped to dump, hugged Larry and Henna, said goodbye. :( We are heading east towards Albuquerque, on our way to Atlanta! We're thinking if we get to Atlanta soon enough, maybe we can see the girls next weekend. We called Bella; spoke to her and Lola. We will call April later to discuss this. Lola was all excited. The first thing she said was, "Where are you?" Ken called Uncle to see how everything was. He is fine. We self-catered our breakfast this morning, re-packed the car and turned the Mustang's nose west again. We turned up Eastern to take us back to Route 66 and then followed it around to the historic SW 6th Avenue area where there are lots of antique stores. We found a painted fibreglass pony and the Natatorium with its castle-like crenellations. Originally the building housed a swimming pool - who knew that a natatorium is an indoor swimming pool? - but now it is an antique store. They had heaps of really cool stuff, but we limited ourselves to one small purchase!! Just out of Amarillo we took a slight deviation to the south of the interstate to visit Cadillac Ranch. Although this 'artwork' was never actually located on Route 66 it is still considered to be a ... read more

Greetings from New Mexico! I've covered 1360 miles since departing NC on Wednesday morning. I realized along the way that I will have driven the entire length of I-40 when I get to the western end in CA on Monday. Granted I didn't depart on this trip from Wilmington, NC but I have driven that segment many times. Really a little of AZ and the CA sections is all that will be new. I stumbled across a bit of trivia today. I learned that 100 degrees west longitude is the border between Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas! Saw a sign around Erick, OK mentioning a museum of the 100 degrees longitude so I researched with my gps and Texas map. I'm more than halfway to my initial destination - San Luis Obispo, CA. Only 1115 ... read more

Tucumcari is a “gold mine” for photographers as the small town of about 5000 population is filled with old motels from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Some are boarded up, some in disrepair and others currently operating. There are dozen of unique old motel signs still hanging from their post. The downtown area had a number of very interesting old buildings, especially the train station. The federal building which burned in 2007 is still standing and un-repaired. There are many murals on the outside walls of buildings throughout the town. Route 66 runs right through the middle of the town. On the western outskirts is a new community college that is a sharp contract from the 50 to 70 year old buildings that are in the same area. The long running TV series, Rawhide with Clint Eastwood was ... read more

Geo: 35.1786, -103.725We checked out of the motel and continued west. Our first stop was the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa New Mexico. This is a natural spring that known for its crystal clear water. It is 81 feet deep and is a constant 61F to 64F year around. As we continued on our way we were about 10 miles outside of Albuquerque when an engine light came on. I pulled over the truck and it stalled out. We called Penske road side service. They sent out a wrecker and towed us into the Penske location in Albuquerque. We waited around while they tried to fix the truck. This went on and on. We were told that they could not fix it and took it to the dealer to be fixed. After waiting a few more ... read more
