Geo: 35.1786, -103.725Today is my birthday yeah!!!After leaving Weatherford in light rain and fog we drive some more R66 until we reach the Apache Trading Post where the road gets swallowed by the I40. Next stop is Clinton which has a fabulous museum and some good photo opps but of cause it is Sunday and it is closed, we take a few good pictures and head towards the Texas border and the small town of Texola. Next is Shamrock and the U-Drop Inn Conoco Station a definite photo opp. As we drive through Texas the weather clears and we spot miles upon miles of wind generators. R66 is very hard to follow here as it is mostly dirt track so we stick to the interstate. The Texan landscape becomes sparse much like outback Australia, as be ... read more

We started in the cool of the morning again today at 5 AM. We stopped for breakfast around 9 AM at a Cracker Barrel. Our first planned stop was Tripp's Harley Davidson to purchase our first souvenir T-shirts. Ran into three guys that are on their way to Alaska. They left from Michigan and have already been to Key West. After we left there, it was on to the Cadillac Ranch on Route 66. This was a must as far as George was concerned. Our name is now etched on several of the old painted and rusty vehicles. Today was another hot one. We arrived at our motel around 1:30pm. We stayed at an old historic motel called the Blue Swallow Motel. It was definitely authentic 50's and much nicer than the motel we stayed last ... read more

Today was a really fun day! We drove from Oklahoma City to Tucumcari. We saw big wind turbine farms in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. On the way, we stopped in Amarillo, Texas to see Harry Potter 6. I absolutely loved it. Mom says "I liked it, but I liked the book more. It was fun to see it in Amarillo in the middle of a day of driving." We also passed by Cadillac Ranch, we didn't get much chance to see it because by the time I told mom, we were past it, so we kept on going. For dinner, we went to Del's, a restaurant that serves Mexican and American food on Route 66. I had a burrito, which I thought was really good. It had cheese on the top, and It was really ... read more

"Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7b This scripture text on Samuel journeying to Bethlehem to annoint the next king of Israel didn't resonate with me much initially. So I pondered it and put in the back of my mind as we drove into the new day. This day was "red letter". A high pressure system had come in behind the rain and the air was clear, the sun bright, and the temp like air conditioning. We drove out into the new-to-us desert landscape marveling at everything around us. Steve kept commenting about the refreshing scent of the junipers that dotted the spaces stretching out from the road. We decided it smelled like a blend of sage and pine. We waited to eat breakfast until we had ... read more

Thrifty Travel Tip #5: Continental breakfasts are always Continental... even if you didn't EXACTLY stay in the hotel. Continental breakfasts are your friend. Hi Friends and Family! My oh my, what a day in the desert. We got off to a good start in the morning, even though we didn't have the best sleep. Sleeping in the car results in waking up about 15 times throughout the night to change positions and reconfigure your sleeping situation according to what parts of your body have fallen asleep or are cramped. In the very early hours of the AM, (I believe it was about 630,) we woke up and decided we were hungry. In order to travel on a budget, one must use the resources around them. For us, that means eating for free at hotels. One of ... read more

Many of the famous sites on Route 66 are in the short Texas piece so we only planned to cover 250 or so miles today so we could make all of our stops. The first was Glenrio - a small ghost town - which gave us an excuse to get out of the car and take some pictures. From there, we went to Adrian - the midway point of Route 66 - and stopped for a late breakfast at the Midway Cafe. If you go there, have the pie. It's great - and the women who run it are fun to talk to. We did a few caches in the area and even ran into some fellow geocachers who were on their own road trip adventure. 4. In Texas, I discovered a fascination with armadillos. I ... read more
