Tuesday May 18, Alturas, California: Last night's discussion with Jerome and Dennis convinced me my off-pavement plans for NW Nevada and riding the Black Rock Playa were clearly rained out. The all-night rains dumped 0.6 in of rain on the Playa. During dinner the rain softened up the ground enough to allow the wind to pull out a couple of my tent stakes. A quick adjustment with some large rocks to secure them, and I crawled in the tent for a night of rain. The rain stopped before dawn, and the ground was soaked. After a nice hot spring morning shower I pondered the options. Since riding the desert back roads was out, which paved riding did I want to pursue? Four options were on the table: head NE and back up into SE Oregon, head ... read more

Monday May 17, 2010, Virgin Valley Campground: Tonight’s cocktail hour has been spent in the tent, listening to a steady downpour of rain. Mr. Boodles is just as delicious, but the scenery sucks. Today’s ride turned out to be more pavement that expected. Not long after coming down a steep escarpment from Hart Mountain Preserve into the Warner Wetlands, the gravel ended. I lubed the drive chain, and deployed the 12V pump to bring the tires back up to 42 PSI. Plush, Oregon held a little country store, but the proprietor did not encourage lingering. A short time later, after powering through a squall line of rain, I stopped in Adel for lunch and fuel. There is no menu at the Adel store. You can have what they have prepared that day. I enjoyed a HUGE ... read more

We're on the next to last leg of our summer long adventure and it's hard to believe it's almost over. Wednesday, Sept 9 we spent a leisurely day the Izaak Walton Hotel in Essex, MT - thanks, Bob and Joanie Dehlendorf for recommending this unique place. The hotel is on the southern border of Glacier National Park and is an old railroad inn that is right on the railway line. A great old place - our room was paneled with wood, and looked like an old railroad car. The dining room is called...The Dining Car...what a surprise... and has big picture windows so you can watch the trains pass by. We're still in huckleberry country and so dinner was huckleberried to death - salad dressing, glaze on the chicken, cobbler and ice cream - I did ... read more

Day one... It started off slow. I started packing the car around 8am and didn't get done til 1pm. I have way too much stuff and not enough room. I finally fit everything and loaded Bobette and Shelly in the car. I didn't know how they would take the movement of the car and being on the road. They adjusted well and were walking around and eating lettuce before going to sleep. I got stuck in traffic going over the bridge, but the rest was pretty good. I didn't make good time at all but tomorrow will be better and I will hopefully make it through Utah and into Wyoming before I stop for the night. I have been listening to CD's made by my Blue October Street Team friends. There is a wide variety that ... read more

Merry Christmas to my loyal followers. Dave and I are back in the good old USA for the holidays. We been running ourselves ragged visiting some friends and family and liquidating assets. We plan to keep sailing for a few more years. I've been paying over $2500/year in storage which is ridiculous and If I keep it in there a few more years, I could just buy all new stuff! From the minute I got to my parents house up in Sonoma, I had posted furniture and other high dollar items on craigslist. I can't tell you how awesome that site is. I also had to have a garage sale. Not much fun but very successful. In fact we were so busy first thing in the morning that a few things got stolen. We couldn't possibly ... read more

I've been updating the blog from a "lovely" little town called Winnemucca where we are spending the night. After 9 hours of driving through places like the great salt desert and the boonies of Nevada we thought it best to spend the night here since the only hotel listed in our AAA tour book for Lakeview had no available rooms and taking a chance of getting into Oregon and having to drive another 100 miles or so to find a room was not prudent. When we stopped at the visitor center in Elko Nevada the woman told Sylvan that she had never been out this way but after Winnemucca there was really no other places to stay. I thought it strange she had never been out this way but now I know why. She isn't ... read more

*Disclaimer: This entry was written by my boyfriend, David. I was too tired and too lazy to write an entry so he did it for me. Plus, he's a better writer than I am. Anyways, I do not take responsibility for anything that he wrote below. If anything offends you in this entry, you should hunt him down in Cleveland, Ohio in about 4 more days. Also, you will see my own comments in bold. I will take responsibility for all of that. :-) **Another thing: Travelblog recently experienced some dumb hacker stuff so a lot of the entries are lost and unclaimed. They are in the process of recovering as much as they can but all of my entries are lost. I will try to go and find them later. I did not save them ... read more

Last December my friend Kris and I made our long-term goal of driving to Winnemucca, NV a reality. Why Winnemucca, you ask? Because we liked the name of this quaint desert outpost, that's why. Much more than simply a Basque outpost in northern Nevada, Winnemucca is a fantastic destination for a road trip through the forgotten west. As Nevada's most resplendant northern hub, Winnemucca boasts several features appealing to those on the road. There are numerous casinos, the best of which is easily the Red Lion where one can take in a game of FTN. These casinos are generally small, but games can be found for the one seriously intent on playing. Many hotels offering cheap accomodations compete fiercely for your business on Winnemucca's main strip. In addition to these, the keen and off-beat seeker will ... read more
