We awoke this morning to a smokey haze all over the entire mesa. We have been watching the fires that are going on in Idaho and Utah and found out that the smoke was blowing over this section of Colorado. We couldn't see any of the hills that surround the area. We were hoping it wouldn't be at the national park we were headed to. We got a late start out of town and headed for Arches National Park. We took the scenic Hwy 128 into the park and were surprised by to find that this road isn't traveled alot. It follows the Colorado River and comes out just north of Moab Utah. We found a beautiful place to stay when we come again! We headed into the park and saw a line of RV's headed ... read more

Today was a great day! We left Pueblo, Colorado and headed west towards Montrose. We decided to take this drive to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. I am glad we did. I had heard this was a must see sight. On our way we noticed signs for the Royal Gorge. Papa had been there in the 1950's and said it was spectacular. We decided to pull down there and check it out...I mean all the signs were pointing us in the direction and how wrong could they be right....well once again, those people are smokin' crack! They wanted $26 per person to walk out on the bridge over the gorge. I think not! I found a small trail that led down to a spot you could view it and took a few ... read more

Today we had an easy day. We slept in and left Dodge City around 8am. We didn't realize how much of a slaughter town this was until today. We noticed the slaughter house on our way into town and as we were leaving, there was truck after truck for hours filled with beef on their way to the slaughter house. We came across several feed yards (the smell was soooo gross) that were loading the beef onto these trucks. It was crazy. We also went by the Tyson plant....this makes me want to go buy a local beef and freeze it! Anyway...we stopped along the route at Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site. It was a fort along the Santa Fe Trail that was used by people who needed a rest and fur trappers selling their ... read more

Oh what a day! We started out early by heading into a town called Picher, Oklahoma. This is town that the kids have wanted to visit once they saw a documentary on the Discovery Channel about it. Here is the wiki informatio on it: "Formerly a major national center of lead and zinc mining at the heart of the Tri-State Mining District, over a century of unrestricted subsurface excavation dangerously undermined most of Picher's town buildings and left giant piles of toxic metal-contaminated mine tailings (known as chat) heaped throughout th... read more

Grammy's point of view: We awoke to thunder and lighting, and a torrential downpour. The night before we went to a Cracker Barrell, for a chicken dinner that was deeeeelish. We got on the road early and headed to the Ozarks and they were beautiful. The road was 40 miles of mountains and trees, like we've never seen before. The overlooks , and hallows were wonderful, we've never seen anything like this. You always hear bad things about the Ozarks, but we only saw a few run-down shacks. We only came across one area of construction, and we went right thru. Next we headed to Branson, what a fun place. It's on the only real river in the area. From there we headed to Joplin, the weather was cool with a hint of rain. That evening ... read more

From Grammy's point of view: On this day we slept in (6:30?) it was sunny and warm. We headed to the Military National Battelfield in Vicksburg, a civil war monument for the soliders that fought there. After a quick history lesson at the visitor center, we headed out. It was a 16 mile trail around the park, that everyone was enjoying including hikers, bikers and moms with strollers. The monuments for the men from different states, Iowa, Illinois,Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin to name a few. After the auto tour loop, we stopped at the U.S.S. Cairo, a Civil War era Ironclad ship. It rested on the bottom of the Mississippi River for over a hundred years, before being raised. It was turned into a Museum, and it was great the kids really enjoyed it. We loved ... read more

We left Galveston a little heavy hearted. We all wanted to stay another week here, but we had more adventure waiting for us. The kids were looking forward to the swamp tour and seeing some alligators. The adults were looking forward to some Cajun food. My parents had been to Lafayette 20 years ago and had gone to a restaurant called Prejeans. I looked it up before I left and found that the place was still open. It was on our bucket list as a "must eat" restaurant. The only way to the mainland from Galveston heading east was via ferry. It is about a 20 minute ride and it was beautiful in the morning. We got right on the ferry and left and were delighted to see a pod of dolphins swarming a shrimp boat ... read more

Sometime in the middle of the night it started to storm....and I mean storm! Thunder, lightening and flash flooding. It was crazy. Our swamp tour was cancelled and we made a decision to head north after watching the weather channel and seeing that it was showing sunshine up north. We left town and headed towards Vicksburg, Mississippi. What a beautiful drive. We drove over the swamp for about 45 minutes and the kids thought it was so cool that they were on a never ending bridge, it was storming the whole time too! As we were cruising along we saw a sign for Port Hudson. We decided to stop and see what it was all about. As it ended up it was a military fort that was used during the Civil War by the Confederates to ... read more

OMG! We LOVE Galveston! We had the best time on the beach and the hotel we stayed at was the best. The Hotel Galvez was built in 1911 and just celebrated its 100th birthday. What a wonderful place. Our shower was the best shower I have ever been in! It took us about 4 hours to get to Galveston once we left San Antonio. We checked in to our room and headed straight to the beach. The water was like bath water and we spent the next 4 hours on the beack swimming and sun bathing. Now, because it was so hot and muggy, I had to rent chairs and an umbrella so we could get out of the sun, but it was sooooo worth it. I rented the kids boogie boards and they tried their ... read more

Well, I am a little behind and a wrote an entire story and somehow this blog lost it all. I need to make this quick.....The Alamo was beautiful although it was very busy. I am glad they didn't charge to get in. We had a wonderful lunch on the Riverwalk and then headed to our hotel. We loved our riverwalk view from our room! We all went for a swim to cool off and then headed back out to the Riverwalk for our riverboat cruise. It was very informative and told of the history of the area. We then headed to the Hard Rock Cafe for the kids to experience a "Hard Rock Hurricane". They even got to keep the glass. Overall, San Antonio was a great place to visit!... read more
