Well...we finally made it back to the great state of Nebraska. We were anxious and happy and sad to be back, paradoxially, all at the same time. The weather is going to take some getting used to. We have been spoiled by 80 degree heat. But, nothing feels better than being back in the presence of our families, making up for lost time. Sometimes it feels like we just left last week, and now we are back, when in reality it has been almost 1.5 years. And friends...well... the good ones, they are seriously hard to find! Another perk of being back is that we can re-kindle old and meaningful friendships. So...we are learning to be Americans again. Hello everyone, With the Olympics approaching in China, I anticipate more people will be reading this blog. I want to provide some info one last time before I close out this blog. I call this the "must read" post, because it deals with something most travelers may have with them: portable electronic devices. In the hotels in China, it seemed there was about a 50/50 chance that the electrical outlets worked properly. But even in the better hotels I stayed at during my 6 weeks in China, I was VERY glad I had a few basic pieces of gear with me. First, NONE of the outlets you will encounter will have a ground plug on the outlet. This means that you cannot plug in ANYTHING that has the 3rd prong on the plug. I happened to, ... read more

Obfuscator writes: How would you like to spend the day in a museum? How would you like to spend the day in a freezer? How would you like to spend the day in a museum that was colder than most freezers? These are the questions you must ask yourself if you are considering visiting Harold Warp's Pioneer Village in the town of Minden, Nebraska and the season happens to be winter. We left our motel in Kearney and headed for historic Fort Kearney, only to find that it was closed for the season. It's probably ok that this happened, since there didn't seem to be much to see there. On a whim, we decided to follow signs to something called Harold Warp's Pioneer Village, which was only about another 10 miles. The closer we got, and ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We woke up to a thick layer of frost over everything. I guess I should be getting used to this, since it is January. Nevertheless, we're finding that camping in the extreme cold holds very little appeal. I think Onaxthiel spent most of the night shivering. I gradually added more layers through the night, which helped a lot, but made me very reluctant to crawl into the 10ish degree outside in the morning. Being in the middle of a big snow-covered State Park with nothing to see did nothing to encourage us to linger further, so we packed up our stuff, and headed out to Lincoln and beyond. It took us a while to get back to the main roads from our campsite, but it all eventually worked out. We skipped past Lincoln for ... read more

Hey all, I flew up north with the Schunks and landed in Kansas City, Missouri before finally arriving in Nebraska. Eric is a big fan of Nebraska Huskers, and as the result, I was introduced closely to the Huskers land. We got along pretty well, considering it is off season for college football - I can't wait until it is starting again in about eight months. Omaha is a cool, chilling town, and it is definitely cold here. At one point it is registered as 15F outside high temp, make me a very happy little southern bird. Until next time, -Cy... read more

Hi all-- I just wanted to drop a quick line to let everyone know that I'll be leaving for France on January 2nd, which is under a week from today. I'm beyond excited at this point. I was really tempted to write this entire entry in French, actually, but realized it would be quite counter productive. So here's your chance to unsubscribe--if you received an email about this post and would like me to remove you from my subscriber's list, please contact me before I leave the states. Or you could contact me anyway, just because you love me and want to say goodbye ;) A bientot SFech... read more

I am home. Since returning, I have gotten some emails about where I stayed in Beijing and how to get around, so I decided to post some helpful information for future Beijiing travellers. The Shuttle bus pictures are two sides of a brochure that can take you from the airport to the cool part of Beijing, near Tiananmen square and stuff. The GOTOhotel pictures are the brochure of the hotel I stayed at... highly recommended. 260 yuan per night (with a deposit of several days lodging up front) and it has maid service, a toilet and shower and high speed internet in each room. When you get through customs at the airport, find your way to the information desk which I think is on the lower level. Show them the shuttle bus brochure, and they will ... read more

Mom played hooky from work and we drove to Omaha to visit the zoo. For some reason, my whole family has a love of zoos. Whenever we're on vacation someplace with a nice zoo, we go. Last week I thought to myself, "You know, it'd be nice to go to the Omaha Zoo. I haven't been there for years." The next day, Mom said, "You know, I can take a day off of work. I think we should go to the Omaha Zoo." Weird. But, normal in my family. So, Mom and I packed a picnic lunch and headed out early in the morning for Omaha. Not too early, though, because it only takes an hour and a half to get there. We entered the zoo at 10:20 and noticed that we could go see the ... read more

We drove through Kansas, which was pretty uneventful with the exception of the sunflowers and the worlds largest ball of twine! NEBRASKA!! First off, I was in three states today that I never thought I would be in: Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska…. There is A LOT of corn in Nebraska! We drove to Kearney (where Jared grew up) and he showed me the house he lived in until he was seven, then we went over to the farm house that he spent most of his childhood in. It was just what I’d imagined it to be…right down to the tire swing out front. He showed me the tree that he planted when he was a child….from there we went into town, and I bought a t-shirt at the University of Nebraska @ Kearney. It was my ... read more

Since it's the end of July, I wanted to publish a quick update with the goings-on of the past few weeks. After Jackson, Philippe and I spent a few days back in Boulder preparing for him to leave. Coordinating with his other climbing partner (Brad McMillon), running a million small errands, packing... all the while, enjoying the excellent company of old and new friends in Boulder. When I dropped Philippe at the airport on the 7th, I just kept heading east... driving all of the way to Omaha, Nebraska to see my family - especially my 87 year-old grandmother. Splitting my time between my dad's house and the retirement community, I played a lot of cribbage, gin, and rummy-cube, watched a lot of Price Is Right, and fixed a few computers. I think Cameron Diaz made ... read more
