I kind of feel bad about writing about this hike a month after it occured, but this semester has been quite hectic and busy. This was just a hike up to the top of Hylite mountain around the time of the very large Derby Fire which has burnt over 190000 acres (yep that's four zeros) here in Montana. One thing I will say about this hike is the amount of Waterfalls coming off this mountain were amazing. One in particular was awesome, it must have been over 150 feet of water flowing down the mountain and at the top there was this little cave filled with moss. We ended up stoping and having a brunchy/lunch thing by Hylite "lake" (a very large mud puddle). It was a sweet day hike, and only a hop, skip and ... read more

Our first stop back in the US was just across the border in Idaho at the lakeside home of our friends Terry Litfin and Linda Monks, where we were joined by Glen and Lori Nyberg. The six of us had served together in May as volunteer campground hosts at Nehalem Bay State Park in Oregon. The house sits on 65 wooded acres surrounding a scenic lake, and has been in Linda's family for a hundred years. We spent a wonderful 4 days here golfing, boating, fishing, hiking and just kicking back and enjoying friends. Next stop was about a hundred miles south at Coeur d' Alene. After two days of relaxing and sightseeing in this beautiful resort town, we headed east, overnighting in the neat college towns of Missoula and Bozeman. We really liked the Big ... read more

Greetings all. It's just about time for take off. About one month and counting. That may seem like a long time for you, but M and I are a sure it will be a milli-second compared to the amount of time we have had to wait already. Anyhow, we are in full motion now and gaining speed. There so many more things we have had to think about / deal with then I had ever imagined. Just crazy business. So we have had a stressful summer here in Bozeman, MT... Lot's of traffic on the way to the river, never enough time to hike all those mountains, and that boss of ours is always puttin' on the pressure. Au Contraire. We've really been working hard on preparing ourselves for the upcoming stress-free, carefree lifesyle. Looking back ... read more

Here is the record of my first ever Seet Pea Festival Experience. Let me start off by saying it is one of the best eight dollars spent here in Bozeman. For the price of a movie at the theater you can have a whole weekend of theater, dancing, and music out in beautiful Lindley Park here in Bozeman. Things started off Saturday morning with (I missed the evening festivities on Friday) a fairly large parade involving a lot of dinosaurs, old cars, clowns, dancers, horses, and two high school classes celebrating their reunion on parade floats down town. After having a free popsicle I was in high spirits to walk over to Lindley Park and see some theater shows and a couple of bands. Hunger and Tater Pigs So I started off the festivities with a ... read more

Arrived in Bozeman after a small journey of 24 hours ish, on a coach with some of the world's strangest people. Lets just say we don't want to talk about it. Bozeman is a city in the north of the rocky mountains, it seems to be more of a ski town and with temperatures in the 90's there is no snow so the place seems fairly quiet, despite its status as a gateway town to Yellowstone Park. Staying in another hostel that feels like somebodies house but is one of the better home hostels we have seen, although it doesn't pass claire's cleaning standards, not that anywhere else has. Bozeman is really friendly, we went for a walk and there were several cars that went past with men leaning out of the window shouting "yehaa" and ... read more

I left Davis last Wednesday with my old school homeboy Nitsan. We are en route to Calgary, because I randomly applied to work at a music festival there. I'm not even that into folk music, but I will be serving beers to people that are. I will also be receiving a free t-shirt and several free meals. (At which point you respond: AWESOME!) Our journey has varied from not spectacular to mildly spectacular to spectacular. Let me review some highlights. On the first night we camped out with some friends at Lake Shasta in northern California. The water was warm, and the white-trashy locals were a plenty. What more could you ask for. We planned on following our friends up the five (I5) towards Eugene, Oregon. We needed to be in Canada 8 days afterwards, and ... read more

Mom and Dad Shorty came out to Montana for a wild and roaring good time on July 18th-28th. Little did they know what kind of adventure they were getting themselves into! The day they rolled into town I was sitting on my neighbors porch discussing the repercussions of some construction worker who had just poured petrol-chemicals onto our street and hoping they would get washed down the drainage system of Bozeman, ahh the excitement had begun. I introduced my parents to my neighbors and took them out to eat at Old Chicago, a quaint little chain restaurant that perhaps some of you have heard of. The unfortunate part of this whole vacation of theirs is that I had to work (both teaching and at the Meat Shoppe -a local butcher/delicatessen here in town) and I would ... read more

Two Mathematicians and a 10 year old Dog Go For A Very Long Walk... ...or at least that's how it started. It sounded like an innocent and splendid plan. A plan to hike the entire length of the Bridger Ridge Run hosted yearly in August by the local Bozeman Running Club, The Wind Drinkers. This is a 19.65 (the short way) or 20.55 (the long way) race across the knifes edge of the Bridger Mountain Range and traverses roughly 3 miles of ups and down along the ridge. This ridge is, as stated before, a barren knifes edge with hardly a tree in sight as high up as 9600 feet (Sacajawea Peak) to as low as, well, Bozeman (4800 feet). It runs along the top of 6 of the 8 peaks of the ridge, across ste ... read more

July 8, 2006 Living in chaos...that has been the theme the last month or so of our lives. During June I traveled 2 of the 4 weeks for work. I had a great time in Memphis for the St. Jude Children's research Hospital training. I advise a student group that raises funds for St. Jude and we were privilaged to go to the Collegiate Leadership seminar the first weekend of June. Mom and Dad came and joined me for a day in Memphis, we ate some yummy ribs, drank sweet tea and walked around Memphis, enjoying the sights and sounds. While I didn't get any pictures with Momma and Dadaw (space cadeted those), I got some great ones at the hospital. It's such a wonderful place and such a great cause to fight for. Alphabetical Altitudes I spent the fourth of July at the M this year. For those of you who don't know what the M is, it is a large M constructed into the side of the Bridger Mountains facing Bozeman. This is not an unusual thing in Montana. For some reason almost every city and town in Montana has the abbreviation of their name on some Mountain or Hill right next door. Now I know what you're saying, Bozeman doesn't start with an M, and your primary school teacher would be very happy at your correct observation. The M by Bozeman stands for Montana State University, there is a B on the other side of the Mountain, but unfortunately due to time and lack of up-keep it is fairly faded and grown in.
