Shane (a fellow mathematician at MSU) and I took a nice hike up thru the Spanish Peaks by Ted Turners Flying D Ranch. It's a beautiful drive and it's right out of town off from Montana's most dangerous and deadly road, US Highway 191. It was a nice little ride in to the full parking lot of the Spanish Creek trail head and a short 3.5 mile hike up to the Spanish Creek water fall. Despite the large amounts of vehicles in the parking lot, we encountered no hikers on the way up to the falls, and only one train of pack horses and campers going up to the mountain lake for the July 4th weekend. The wild flowers (wild roses, sticky geraniums, lupines, blue bells, and more) were out in true form, unfortuntately the only ... read more

We hit the road after yet another late checkout - we decided to hit the local Target and Petco. We really didn’t need anything; we just wanted to see if the Target in Montana had the same stuff as the ones in Southern California. Guess what! They do!! Plus, they sell spurs, alfalfa cubes, and tractor oil right there - very handy! After a few necessity purchases and a quick gas stop, we hit he road around noon at a balmy 72 degrees. Montana is truly one of the most beautiful spots in the world. No particular place in Montana - pretty much the whole state is a winner in our book. We stopped for lunch in a little town called Hardin at a lovely little joint called the Purple Cow. Cute little place… very, um, ... read more

The title says it all. We're getting closer, day by day. Each day we put in a couple more hours, and each day that's one step closer to moving in. You can see all the things that are coming together. Now all the cabinets are in and we're waiting for the countertops to be delivered so we can install them. Once they're in, we're rolling! The plumbers will come back in and put in the faucets and sinks, etc. and hook up the water and we'll be able to get rid of the "Potty Princess" port-o-let! So, now we're painting ceilings. We've got one more coat on downstairs and it'll be done. Then we can clean the floor and bring the finish concrete guys back in to finish the concrete. And then it will be ready ... read more

So, we've moved on to installing doors and floors, or I should say, 'floor'. The floor in the 1st floor is dyed, poured concrete, so it's already done, except for having the concrete pros come back and seal it....which will come when we're done painting down there! So, last week we prepped the subfloor in the great room and the upstairs hallway to lay down the fir flooring. We had to scrape all the dried drywall mud and other gunk that had collected on the subfloor and vaccum it well. This is how dirty/dusty it was - we have a big shop vac and we clogged a filter beyond cleaning, then got a new one, clogged it though we were able to clean it and then clogged it again at the end of installing the flooring. ... read more

So, the first picture is from the 23rd of April....we spent that day painting the green wall. Duncan as relegated outside so that we don't have any happy puppy tail swipes through the green paint. We spent that rainy morning/early afternoon at the Carpet Mill Outlet, picking out our carpet. We have a super plush neutral in our master, a nice neutral in the 'baked bean' room, and a nice, dark green in the 'chicory' room. They were having a big sale so we got a good deal. We also bought tile for the guest bath. It's really nice - called 'quartzite' so it looks like stone and even has some sparkle to it. The sparkle is definitely what drew me. We're still debating on our Master bath tile but we're getting closer to narrowing it ... read more

That's been my motto the last week and a half...just about every day we've put at least a coat of paint somewhere on the house. Starting on Saturday, April 15, when we had our "Painting Party". Several of our friends came over to help! (we can't thank them enough!) We got the first coat on several rooms this day. And enjoyed the company of good friends, some good food and plenty of laughs. At the same time as the paint party, Bryan, Mike, Alex and Ernie were putting on the roof. They got the whole thing shingled and now, Bryan just has to put on the vent....now if we can only get a day that's nice and not windy.... Last Friday, April 21, we primed the last wall upstairs and all the walls downstairs. Saturday (4/22) ... read more

So, I'm going to try an experiment here. Everyone's been having trouble opening the pictures I send. I don't understand why because I put them in .pdf's so that everyone can see them and I can put comments on them. And everyone should be able to open them, acrobat reader's free. But maybe MSN does some weird encoding as I send them and that's why they don't come through. So, I'm going to try to put house updates and pictures here. It may not be a 'standard trip' but it sure has been a trip, an adventure like I've never experienced before. So, we are at the stage of painting. We have **most** of the upstairs done. All three bedrooms (except the closets) and the guest bath are done. The great room (kitchen, dining, living all ... read more

It's September 26th...11pm. This is my last blog from Montana. Tomorrow morning I wake up at 5 am and bustle to the Bozeman airport. Sienna and I fly to Philadelphia at 8:15am. Everyone has been asking me how I feel: excited, nervous, scared... Somehow, I don't feel any of those things yet. The best word we came up with was "apprehensive" but even that is not quite right. Yeah, there's that small churning in my stomach...there's a million questions floating in my head. But always, it seems, with big life events, they just seem to happen. That's all. I'm not necessarily a bystander or an onlooker--I'm definitely part of the flow. But that's it. I just go with it. What can you do but let it happen? It's inevitable. This is the path I chose to ... read more
