My bag is missing! tear apart the room a dorm room with fake wood furniture and a bunk bed sharing the toilets like the good old days retrace my steps i didn't leave it at the restaraunt Peter made to put it in his own bag "No, no," i said, "I can carry it." I noted the annoying way it slid off my raincoated shoulder walking back In the bathroom I put it down in the bathroom track down the cleaning lady she doesn't speak english when something is missing and not where it's supposed to be a certain space of panic ensues but where could it be under the covers? IT IS NOT HERE front desk people asking stupid questions "maybe you left it outside? did you check your room?" and then as I'm writing ... read more

I have not written because i have been on a train forever and in greece seeing things i saw before but with the fam seeing them with Peter made me appreciate small travelling groups highlights: i vomited in a bag with a small hole in it on the back of the bus on the way to Delphi while eating dinner in the crowded streets of touristy Plaka in Athens a table of Austrian men sang a beautiful toasting song in three part harmony i looked over at them and they toasted emphatically one of them struck up a conversation with us we talked about colorado mountains and austrian mountains and when we mentioned peter's bag was in Newark the leering austrian said "Well, you will go back there to get your bag and leave your girlfriend ... read more

Peter arrived at 3 in the morning yesterday with only his carryon but grinning and so a new chapter of the trip has begun After the family left and before peter came I set off to find the Herekledion museum and a traveling exhibit of Toulouse Lautrec I found it as well as an archeological museum along the way i mostly stopped in because i was overheating but soon found what a disadvantage it is to NOT have my dad on hand to ask questions "when exactly did the classical greek period start?" "why does that figurine look Egyptian, were they in contact with the Egyptians?" more great graffitti and sprawling wall murals along the way i found the Herekledion Museum Well-known artists seem to lose their cliche value when viewed in an exhibit that spans ... read more

We crossed the small channel between the Greek island Samos and Turkey Asia Minor in a short time but waiting a long time to get things situated (İ'm using a Turkish keyboard and typing, slowly, with my mouth open. The biggest difference, the i which, apparently İ use a lot...} we crammed on with a large Italian tour group and were ushered off and into an ultra modern port burger king starbucks gummy bears so much to buy we couldn't find the exit but we did and walked to our hotel a re-vamped strong-hold/hotel for merchants on the silk road think extraordinarily large steps and thick walls to ward off ınvaders we eat breakfast ın the courtyard entertaıned by the kıttıes pouncıng behınd the expensıve turkısh carpets and scalıng ancıent trees after turtle doves (last prayer ... read more

We had the ultimate Greek dining/evening experience. A taxi took us up the other side of Patmos, the island where we were anchored for the night and dropped us off near a concrete-stoneworkers yard, followed the drive down to an authentic greek restaurant with rows and rows of tables we were the first to arrive at 8:30 pm and were guaranteed many locals solicited this very place there was a stage and kitties peering through the window and a wonderful view of the bay up and over there to the right and we started imbibing and eating even though the place was empty the "mezes" started marching in the appetizers tsasiki eggplant spread bread meatballs tomato balls eggplant moussaka(sort of quiche sort of thing) legendary greek salad fried cheese cheese pie pastry and dinner hadn't even ... read more

Sailing is a whole other thing here, on this boat, than what i first learned five years ago on the Harvey Gamage doing Ocean Classroom no dock watch no bow watch each cabin has it's own head no hauling on lines no furling sails what's a winch? lines lie on the deck for longer than i'm comfortable with, uncoiled no charting our plot "see that island? that's where we're headed?" fresh water shower dinner on shore every night and although it feels cushy it is so nice to be on the water again so nice to feel like i'm on the water sitting at this computer (where i'm getting free internet for 15 minutes...) on solid land my knees are sunburned from todays sail over we only had the genoa(headsail) out and tacked beautifully a couple ... read more

Tour busses of the size found here in Greece are NOT meant to wend through ancient streets meant for horse and carriages and Peugeots so we rented a car (a Peugeot) and made our way from from the Athens airport (first taking a bus from Napflio, then a taxi to the airport) and went to Delphi which was not an easy day trip away from Kalampaka as our travel agent had insisted Windy, windy roads as in twisty, turny, easily car sick roads up and up and up severe switch backs and cars passing big trucks on iffy turns and the trucks expecting us to do the same "No way! Ya right!" following the road signs in Greek makes for some fast learning "I think that's an L, go right." but the English signs would follow ... read more

Meteora from the root word Meteoros "to be suspended in air" we came in the night Lights were trained on the rocks and it looked like fog to our tired eyes we logged an 18 hour day and 400 some km and as we approached we realized the scale of the rocks watching over these towns seeing pictures of this place before we came here made it look like cliffs by the sea but we are not so near the shore and the masses of rock are parts of an ancient inland sea thrust up between more docile hills and mountains millions of years ago metamorphic rock pebbles fist sized stones are clearly seen naturally cemented into the rocks at eye level but i cannot acurately describe to you how towering they are pock marks and ... read more
