So I have officially started the countdown. It is either 9 or 10 days before I leave. I will probably not have my flight booked until 1-2 days before departure just due to the fact that they can't book my flight until my visa is placed in my passport and I get that back in the mail. Yesterday, I started packing all of my clothes. I bought those ridiculous space saver bags-and yes, they do save space indeed-but my one bag already weighs 65 pounds and that is just a PORTION of my clothes! I still have to pack backup supplies of red hair dye, tampons (since those are harder to come by in Korea), toothpaste, makeup (oh Jesus, there is another 65 pounds just in itself), and shoes. During this packing extravaganza, Cami (my dog) ... read more

Nearly every sport in nearly every league I have chosen a team to support but Ice Hockey I had none. I don’t hate a team, in fact I don’t know much. Looking for excuses to minimise the options the only team I canned was Vancouver after last seasons end. I also wanted a team that was Middle America not the cliché New York team, Boston or a big city Canadian team. I then heard that Minnesota had a team called Wild. I looked at the map and saw it bordering Canada in the north of the states. I knew a few people living there too so I was going to stay a few days. Plus it gave me the perfect opportunity to support a nonsensical name for a team – Minnesota Wild. I always wondered what ... read more

Finally! Today is the day. We are leaving... we hope. Today Mike Smith and I leave for Santiago, Chile. It has been 11 days since the 8.8 mag earthquake hit Chile. Our flight that was scheduled for 03-02-10 was cancelled and had to be rescheduled to today 03-09-10. So... we have already lost a week on our travel duration and the area we planned on spending the most time in has been damaged. We will make the most of it and still have a wonderful adventure. Today we are flying out of Minneapolis, MN with a layover in Dallas, TX and a over night flight into Santiago, Chile. Today will be a long day... I am very excited to get under way. Today is the start of a amazing adventure!... read more

And now for something completely different! I've been contacted by people from all over the world who have read my blog and I'm now up to 8700 hits. So I'm taking a momentary break from Saudi Arabia blog entries, to give you some photos from where I live. There is nothing more Minnesotan than the Minnesota State Fair, which takes place at the end of August. Here are some photos that my daughter took while we were there. These photos are the essence of being Minnesotan. In fact, these could be used in an anthropology class at the University of Minnesota to help explain the psyche of Minnesotans. What they stand for, what they eat, what's important. And please note: in NONE of the photos will you see snow (well, maybe snow cones, but that's different). ... read more

Hello all, After a very long day (and night) of flying, I am back home, and in one piece. Although, getting through US passport control proved once again to be the most difficult part of the trip. That Syrian Visa gets them every time, and this particular agent made me state again and again that my travels to 'that part of the world' (meaning, I presume, the Middle East) had nothing to do with my work (as if they know what I do...). In the end, they let me through, although I think it was largely due to the fact that I could clear up a little mystery for them. For, my Immigration Agent also asked me several times if I had any agricultural products that I was bringing back (me, who can't keep a potted ... read more

I dag fik ... read more

Again, for those of you who are asking... My travel companion for Jordan is my friend Amil, who currently lives in San Francisco (and works at Wells Fargo, but don't hold that against him...). We met many years ago now when we both were enrolled at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (UK) and living at Harvey Court (ugh). I could tell you stories of the classes we took together... for instance how the Professor teaching 'Philosophic Themes from Descartes to Wittgenstein (Alan Hobbes) spent most of his time pontificating against women academics ('they spend too much time reading and grading papers and not enough time caring for home and children'), with ancedotes drawn from his rather brief marriage and rather long divorce proceedings, but instead I will leave you only with beautiful images of Cambridge, soon ... read more

Hello all, With less than a week until my departure for Egypt (four days and counting...) I have already been asked if I am planning on taking another picture of my shoes. For those of you who might not have followed along on my last adventure (and therefore are wondering why someone would expect to see a picture of my shoes), a brief recap, with photos... Not long into my last trip (into the rain forests of Central America) a Costa Rican friend and I decided to spend a day on an extreme hike up an inactive volcano in the middle of a cloud forest. Having reached the summit much more quickly and easily than anticipated, we mutually concluded that the only logicial course of action would be to climb back down- on the inside of ... read more

The wife and I had a great escape from the heat and concrete views of Houston. We fled to the wonderful Minnesota state fair to see a live broadcast of our favorite radio show live. www.radioheartland.org What a great show. We had lots of food great food. Buffalo bits are my favorite. I’m not sure what they do to them but dang they are good. ... read more
