I made it to Cappadocia, a place I tried and failed to reach 18 years ago when I was last in Turkey. It is an area where early Christians lived in caves dug into the stone formations. ... read more

The 25th was a lovely night at sea. The next day we caught a tuna and Amanda made a nice fish pie. The 26th after my midnight watch the winds picked up to 25-30 knots. I still slept fine, but woke to help reef. My next watch I wore my foul weather gear and needed it as waves were routinely dousing the cockpit. The windvane steering is pretty cool. It's my first time with on, but uses no power and the stronger the wind, the better it works which is good because we have very little power, and lots of wind. I got a little seasick feeling yesterday. I'm using a tranderm patch since we started to help. We have been on a course that puts us out to sea a bit more that we would ... read more

Today I met the crew of sailing vessel Koae a 42' Westsail captained by Jesse B. and crewed by two friends Amanda, Paul and now me for this leg of the trip. They were a much more simpatico crew than Bruce was on last year's trip. Greatly a great group. I met them at the marina, we did a bit of cleaning, filling water, rebuiding the wind vane, and then off for provisioning. A hefty $700 grocery bill means we probably went a bit overboard. With daylight ticking away, we motored out of the marina with an engine that had started to run rough since Mexico, so after 5 minutes we shut off the engine, and hoisted the sails as the sun was setting. Jesse made dinner, after that he went over some of the operations ... read more

After last years successful crewing experience in the Caribbean, I thought I would try it again this winter. From one of the crew locating websites out there I found a sailing instructor who was delivering his own boat from San Diego to Rhode Island. The original plan was a two week section from Costa Rica to the Panama Canal, but as the date approached they were running behind, so I could catch the same dates joining in Guatemala and making it as far as two weeks took us. I knew the boat was stopping in Puerto Quetzel to change crew, so off I went. I landed in Guatemala City. The boat wasn't leaving until the next day, so I figured I'd try to see a little of the country as a tourist for the day. I ... read more

The thing about living in a small town is you can't fly direct to anywhere but the nearest big town. Toronto in our case which requires an overnight stay to catch a morning flight so a lot of trips require a day of intermodal transport on each end. So yesterday as a longish drive and a hotel. A pet peeve is the trend of airports saying to show up earlier and earlier. YYZ wants us there three hours early :/ so I'm at the gate with 2.5 hours to look for food and write a blog I guess. We're going with backpacks and keeping it light. There are a lot of cruising sailor blogs on the area and one (www.nonconformest something.something) recommend a taxi so we skyped him and he should be waiting at the airport. ... read more

I haven't used the travel blog in some time, not that there hasn't been much happening since the last used. Mainly, immigrating to Canada. It's got it's pros and cons, but one of the pros is more time off for travel. Last year I watched the sailboats float up and down the other side of the lake, so summer 2013 I spent one weekend 6 hours a day in sailing lessons on a C420 two man dinghy. I've mellowed enough to where that appealed to me more than a jet ski or motorboat. By the end of summer I owned a little 16' pocket cruiser and trailer. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with it before the water turned too cold for me to feel safe out alone in it. The long winter ... read more

The wife and I had a great escape from the heat and concrete views of Houston. We fled to the wonderful Minnesota state fair to see a live broadcast of our favorite radio show live. www.radioheartland.org What a great show. We had lots of food great food. Buffalo bits are my favorite. I’m not sure what they do to them but dang they are good. ... read more

I have been holding up in Chiang Mai since last I wrote. I fly back to Vietnam tomorrow. I just wanted to post a few pictures and let you see what I have been up to. There are a lot of Vespas here, I think some are made here. I Met an english teacher girl from New York, she said there is no V in Thai so they all call them Wespa's and think that is how the rest of the world says it too. Kind of cute. The best pictures are the ones that you have to let get away. I was using a payphone today and an grandmotherly type lady, quite short, could barly walk, pulls up on her motorbike, pulls off her half helmet to display her curtly gray hair and walks into ... read more

Not too much to really report. Just wanted to let you know I am alive. I am in Chiang Saen tonight. I stayed on the river in Tha Ton last night. I hired a motorbike for 5 days. I was getting very stir crazy in Chiang Mai and needed to escape. I love the time I am in the saddle twisting through the mountains, it feels like my soul is at rest and I am at peace with the world as I fly through it. It's the stoping and having to figure out what to do in the evenings solo that isn't much fun as I'm not really one for the nightlife, not really a problem in Chiang Saen as there is no nightlife to speak of. Nice people though, much less touristed and I'm not ... read more

The trip has hit a much slower pace right now. I am holding up for the Loi Krathong festival. I have a good $6 guesthouse and am happy to just do nothing for but watch the festival. They have fireworks and they have some that are WAY louder than what we have in the states. It really sounds throughout the city like a cannon going off. They aren't so carefull with them either. Little kids maybe 6 years old will light things that shoot, flame, explode, and fling sparks right in the middle of a crowd of people. It is amazing the way the people love the King here, very different than the US right now. I am not sure what to do next. I think end of the festival tonight, cooking class tomorrow, then head ... read more
