Sometime things just work out. After the wedding everyone was off to thier respective locations. I however didn´t have a plan. My friend Tim said he would want to see Barcalona. One of the people at the wedding said they had a friend in Sitges which is just a short distance from Barcalona and I could stay there, which I am learning is really the way to see the world, not just because it is cheaper, but because you have someone to talk with and also a local guide which is great, so I don´t even need a guide book. Well it turns out Sitges is having a major festival and I just saw theses crazy 15 foot dolls dancing through the street and the human castel which is a tradional festival activity. Tonight is fireworks ... read more

Wow that was a cool wedding. It started in the church a 2pm and there where things planned until 2am including fireworks. There is so much to tell about it I won,t start now as I am in the airport and the plane boards in 20 min. The lounges here in Germany for Luftunsa are great with free internet pcs. I am flying to Barcalona to do whatever and then off to Istanbul the 25th. I am staying with a friend of someone I meet at the wedding party so hopefully not too bad on the pocket book and another chance to swim in the sea. It has been raining here a lot so it will also be nice to get back to the heat. I still don,t have a plan for Asia, but I am ... read more

Hey all, Yesterday I went to the legal wedding at the courthouse were the Major married my friend Casey and his wife Danni. This has been great as I have been tagging along with the well planned sightseeing trips lead by the bride´s father. We have seen old towns, the largest waterfall, climbed the tallest church spire, visited the town of Einstien´s birth and had lots of local food. Bread, cheese and coldcuts of all kinds is normal for breakfast. It has been awesome staying with this super super nice family and they taken care of all the details and translation which means it has been very relaxing. I have to run down to breakfast and have some blackforest cake mmmm...... See ya next time... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn August 20th 2005

Hi all, sorry it has been so long, but I have been pretty busy. The ferry over to Tallinn was very nice with a cafe and store on board. I thought it would travel a little faster being a hydrofoil, but we went a constant 38 MPH, still not bad at 1 hour 30 min for the crossing from Helsinki. Tallinn is a huge port for tourists and the streets of the old town was sort of like being in Disneyland. Filled with toursits with their cameras out taking pictures and buying trinkets, but the town has been put back into original condition and was filled with interesting buildings and it had a compleate wall around the city still in very good shape. It is one hill which was good for remembering which way you came ... read more

Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki August 13th 2005

I read that seeing Helsinki by bicycle is a good idea and I would have to agree. Friday I rented a bike and rode one of the many bicycle routes around the city. The whole town is really set up for bikes with their own lanes and traffic signals and all. I can't get over how much it reminds me of where I grew up in northern Wisconsin. I guess that is why there are so many Finns living there. Last night I checked out the night life with one of the locals. They say it is more active in the winter and right now it is a little thin because many people are on holiday. The arctic bar was not worth it. I was much smaller than I thought. It was the size of a ... read more

Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki August 12th 2005

Hi everyone, Today is my third day in Finland and tonight I am going to check out the night life including and arctic bar where the wall and tables are all made of solid ice. I am really enjoying my time here even though the weather has been around 15c and rain on and off again. It looks to be clearing up now a little though. This is the cleanest place I have been to I think. It is very organized and modern. Of course everyone seems to have a Nokia cell phone and a sauna which I think is great. There seems to be a good amount of live music and I look forward to that tonight. The best part for me is the peace of being able to relax since I am staying in ... read more

Europe » Italy August 11th 2005

Hi all, I am currently in Finland but had just a few general thoughts from the time in Italy. First of all there is an amazing feature. Every thing is just 100 meters down the road. My hotel, the hardware store I was looking for, the place to buy bus tickets. Ask for directions and it is just 100m down on the left. Walk 300 meters and ask again, yup just 100m down on the left. Finally I rented a scooter and the hotel is actually just shy of 2km away. Lesson well learned. One of the main frustrations I had in Naples was the difficulty doing something as riding the bus as an outsider. There is a massive bus and train station combined. You actually buy your ticket for the bus at newspaper stands and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi August 8th 2005

OK yesterday the first half was a frustraiting and the second half was great as I took a vacation from roughing it. The first half of the day was at the airport arguing with the ticket counter and making arrangements for flying out early which is tough because Naples doesnt have a counter for Luftunsa or United which is who I am flying on. I would call the airline support number and they would tell me it should be no problem, but the Italians at the counter said they couldn't change my date and refused to call the airline to speak to them about it. After a long time in the hot phone- internet shop making plans. I was able to cash in my Hilton points and had just enough for a one night stay at ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples August 7th 2005

Well I went to the airport which is all I was supposed to have to to do get an ticket for today. What they didn't take into acount when telling me this is that United nor Luftunsa have a ticket counter in Naples!!!! The nearest is Rome. Looks like I may be stuck here till the 11th. If so I am just going to hang out on one of the islands. It will blow my budget, but much better than hanging out here in the crazy city.... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei August 6th 2005

Hi, Well, I must admit Italy is not quite what I had hoped for and I may leave tomorrow or Monday which is about 4 days sooner than planed. If so, my flight is to Helsinki which does not really have more than a weeks worth to do and is expensive Sooooo... the plan would be to take the one hour hydrofoil ferry over to Estonia where I can live well on 350 elt per day or whatever it is they spend over there. Its something like 30 USD. About a third the cost of Italy or Finland. Today I saw Pompeii! It takes about 4 hours and is massive. Maybe a mile or more across. Everything is amazingly detailed and decorated. I couldnt believe the level of comfort and beauty for 60 AD. Then you ... read more
