My mom and I actually tried to visit Mackinac Island the day before, on 18 July 2011, but the clouds were pretty dark and thunder was evident, so we held off a day. Turns out the next day, my mom's birthday, was a much better weather day. My mom even demanded to pay for both the round trip ferry ride as well as a private one hour coach ride around the South side of the island. On her birthday! Thanks Mom! There are some interesting things about the island. No motorized vehicles allowed. Bicycles, horse drive carriages, and walking are the ways to get around. There are people on the island year 'round, but the tourist season ends with the warm weather. To be anywhere in the Grand Hotel is a USD $10 charge if you ... read more

In the North Channel, one of our favorite anchorages is Bear Drop Harbor with its deep water, good holding and spectacular surroundings. Then, we aimed for the USA, and probably, the only sea that was decent for Trusty III. We must stop in Drummond Island to report for customs and the last time, we did the loop, and it was a breeze to clear customs, but not anymore. You feel like a murderer, officer comes on board and ... read more

... read more

With only 17 days left until my long awaited trip to Europe. I have understandably grown restless, each day goes by even slower than the last as the day of my departure draws nearer. When I woke up today I just couldn't take it any longer! I had to leave the house and go somewhere and do something! I had only recently bought and installed a GPS Navigation System for my moped, which I also intend to use in Europe as well. So at 8am I got dressed and plotted a course for Mackinaw City. Surprisingly the trip would only take me an hour and forty minutes from my moped. I dressed warmly, packed everything I would need, most importantly my camera, and hit the road! Sure enough, I got there after an hour and forty ... read more

This one is out of chronological order, you still have Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island, Michigan to come, but I wanted to put this one together now. For those of you who don't know, I have a thing for round rooms or turrets on houses. Someday it is my plan to have a house that has a super tall turret that I can turn into my library, with a huge ladder on wheels that I can wheel around the round room. Until then, I am constantly on the lookout. Mackinac Island was a fantastic place to get ideas for my future round room library (I think Cody had his fill of hiking the island for round rooms, however - he doesn't share in my over enthusiasm for them). This particular blog is basically for my own ... read more

We took a boat to Mackinac Island and explored some of it. The whole island was only three miles long and there were no cars or buses on it, mostly horses. We found a park, a cemetery, and a cave. There were lots of trails going all around the island. Then we went back downtown and ate at a restaurant. We looked at some more shops until it was time to go. About half the shops sold fudge and candy, because that’s what the island specializes in. Then we took the boat back, and crossed to border into Canada and drove to Sudbury, where we spent the night.... read more
