North America » Mexico » Sinaloa » Mazatlan February 7th 2009

We are leaving early Saturday the 7th from Home to Mazatlan for 7 days without kids. This is a major deal as we have not been alone for a week in 14 years. Very worried about leaving the little one as a week is a LONG time at that age and until now have not left her for more then a few hours at a time. We are staying at EL CID in the "golden coast" area. I haven't been to this part of Mexico, so should be interesting. ... read more

We left The Smokeys at about 4ish (pm) and drove until 8 something (pm) stopped for gas & KFC (we haven't eaten out much during this trip, but I was tired) in Alabama, after driving through the rest of TN a small part of georgia. We went on to the next rest stop and ate there and I decided to just get some rest there. I woke the kids around 12:30 am to get back to the road. I could sleep well, there was about 20 trucks & me and they all had the engines running the whole time (like they always do when they stop to sleep) and with a hole in the roof it was quite noisy as well as the one that was being worked on and then towed away. I drove until ... read more

We wake up to find that we just "happen" to be a hop-skip & jump from the Great Smokey Mountains. So we go...... Trevor had heard about the bear attack here a month ago, right before we left on our trip and he's not a big fan of heights, so he wasn't thrilled. We came in through the Tenn side and had to pass all the tourist stuff. I've never been here before and was very suprised to find just how tourist-y this place was. Shouldn't have been suprised. We had read that this was the busiest National Park in the country and about twice the amount of people visit the Smokey then visit the Grand Canyon, which is number two. We opened our trusty National parks book to see what we "had" to see and ... read more

North America » United States » Pennsylvania » Gettysburg September 20th 2008

Next morning we went to a pancake breakfast there at the camp and while the kids finished up and went to the park I tore the truck and trailer apart and cleaned it all up while looking for the kids.....found them where 3 of the kids had already "looked". we packed everything up and drove into Gettsyburg. We found the visitor center, a few battlefields and the Cemetery. Also the sight of the Gettysburg Address. We went to Cemetery Hill battlefield first then across the street to the Cemetery. It was really amazing to see so many old grave sites and some much of them unknown. There where people for all the big wars buried there. We hooked up to the part of a tour while there and got to hear about the site of the ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York September 19th 2008

Next morning after a re-vote and a re-count of the miles to get to Cape Bredon (about 750 round trip) we decided to drive home before the rain can ruin the trailer. We have 2600 miles to go. So at 7am we start towards the US. Getting across New Bunswick takes hours (we are avg about 50 mph or 85 k because we can't drive too fast towing a trailer). Getting in to US as American's was much easier then getting into Canada, not that it was that bad. there was another check point in Maine after about 50 miles. Maine took about 13 hours to cross and still no moose to be seen despite the warnings everywhere. We decided to take some smaller roads to get a little look around as we entered NH. We ... read more

North America » Canada » Nova Scotia » Peggy's Cove September 17th 2008

On the way out of P.E.I we picked up a bag of P.E.I. irish potatoes-yum....and went back over that long-long bridge. Nova Scotia wasn't that that far, just a few minutes through New brunswick and your there. First thoughts was no one lives here. After the visitor Center there are miles of just hill and trees. we drove south to a campground northwest of Halifax and stayed the night. Next morning we drove noth west to Windsor (I think the 5th we have driven through on this trip) to see the south side of the bay of Fundy. From there we went south west and found a u-pick apple farm and we picked about 12lbs of 2 types of apple.....again yummy. We drove south from there to the historical fishing village of Lunenburg and then north ... read more

North America » Canada » Prince Edward Island September 17th 2008

After looking at Fundy Bay one last time we start for Prince Edward Island or P.E.I. as the locals call it. To get to this wonderful place you have to cross a longgggggg bridge one lane each way. now when I say long.....it's long about 8 miles long without any land below. at the highest point it's about 200ft tall. The Confederation Bridge is the longest continuous marine span bridge in the world over ice-covered waters (a bridge over troubled waters). It was just built in 1997, until then the only way to reach P.E.I. is by ferries, which don't function in icy waters so well. It's a toll bridge, but they don't charge you coming in....just leaving and plenty. So once on P.E.I. we drove up to the Cavendish area and found a camp and ... read more

North America » Canada » New Brunswick » Fundy National Park September 17th 2008

When we left Quebec we were headed to Fundy Nat'l Park in New Brunswick. At Hartland we took a detour to see the longest covered Bridge at 1,282 ft long. We took a few pictures, but it was being worked on so it was closed. We passed a few more covered bridges on the way to Woodstock, where we decided to camp for the night. When we woke, we were over looking a nice river right by an old bridge....the kids took some time inthe morning to play at the park and pick so wild apples. After breakfast we drove on to Saint John, New Brunswick's biggest city at the mouth of the Saint John River. There we saw the Reversing Falls Rapids.....but we weren't there at the best time so - it only kinda' looked ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Québec City September 16th 2008

Drove to a bus park and ride and took the bus into town. This is much easier then what we've had to deal with in some other cities. For the bargain price of $5 for all of us (me $2, Delaney free & the kids $1) we get passage on the buses all day and without the hassle of looking for parking (or paying for it). Took the bus to Old town Quebec, really neat place, it's a walled city inside a city on a cliff, next to a river. We walked up the small, winding cobblestone streets all the way to the castle at the top, looking into most of the shops on the way up. This place is very French but also tourist filled. We did some museums about life 100-300 yrs ago in ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal September 15th 2008

From Ottawa we drove to Montreal and did a little looking around. We were able to see the Olympic Dome, old town Montreal and a very old church. We found a look out place on top of the mountain and were able to see the whole city. Montreal is a pretty city with lots of parks. We ate lunch here and bought some french cookies. Most everyone here speaks French...some only speak French. We bought gas outside the city and It took 3 people to understand that we just needed to pay for gas. the vote was to drive on to Quebec and stay the night there.... read more
