Life back at MSU, very busy. I have lots of class work, that I am avoiding at all costs. I better get down to it since I have homework for every one of my five classes that just so happen to be: Intermediate Accounting I- My favorite class since I am continually learning something new and actually enjoying it. Amazing how this major works out for me. Accounting Information Systems- Great teacher, but crazy computer work, boo. Introduction to Econometrics- Basically this is business statistics with a twist. Let's show you how to prove a billion different proofs that each take an hour to complete, double boo. Honors Business Law- Great instructor, tough material. sooo much to learn. Intermediate French II- I feel like I already took this course, why? Because I did, last spring in ... read more

So We've officially crossed our 14th state line in 3 weeks. We're only going through a total 16 new states on the tour, so you can imagine how much criss-crossing we'll do to fill the time from here on out. Which seems fine to me; repeated chances to visit or revisit favorite areas...like the JACK-A-LOPE capitol of the WORLD, Douglas, Wyoming. Meet Douglas, our team Mascot. We picked him up in a little novelty shop, and have since velcroed him to our dashboard. He faces the road, into the sun, into the future with the dignity of...Mr. Bean. You know, Rowen Atkinson? Trust me, if you know what I'm talking about then you know what I'm talking about. ANYWAY, two tastey items that I must share with you. In Madison, Wisconsin I tried Blu Creek blueberry ... read more

My early worries before the trip were baseless. While my usual planning was as helpful as always; Thailand was more than ready to open its arms to Colin and me. Perhaps even more than western Ireland, the Thai people displayed true hospitality and showed us that they were very happy to have us in their country. Thailand is a wonderful place. Before we began planning this trip, Thailand, Bangkok, and Southeast Asia in general seemed like some of the most distant and exotic places on the planet. Movies I had seen (such as “The Beach”) combined with songs like “One Night in Bangkok” created an illusion of unpredictable dangers. In reality, Thailand, including Bangkok, seemed a lot safer than Chicago and I was underwhelmed by expected challenges. While the sex shows in Pat Pong, markets with ... read more

I'm finally back in East Lansing -although I'm only mentally half here. I forced myself to stay up until midnight yesterday, but then woke up at 4 a.m. I've been unpacking, sorting gifts, talking with Joel, and working on the Thailand photos this morning. I think I'm going to take a nap now and then get up again in the afternoon. The jet lag has been severe for me coming home although I hardly had it at all on the way over. Maybe I need to get used to the cold weather again, but my apartment seems really chilly. It'll be tough to keep from getting a cold for Thanksgiving. I had planned to write some final thoughts on the trip for this post, but instead I'll save that for when I'm feeling better. My 100 ... read more

I confess to being a control freak. Whether it’s with a campaign or with a trip, I like my environment and my future to be scheduled with everything arranged and in its proper place. While my duties at work often exceed those of anyone else in the office, my desk is nearly bare by comparison to those of my co-workers -it appears that I do nothing. I don’t deal well with uncertainty and a lack of organization. I’ve realized through my planning for this upcoming trip that Thailand is far from predictable. This country is so laid back and chaotic that it is impossible to acquire the feeling that I’ve adequately prepared for this trip. My favorite haunts, Ireland and Toronto, fit my personality well. I know exactly what to expect from them. The TTC (Toronto’s ... read more

Regardless of what happens on this trip, for better of worse, no one can fault Colin and I for not doing our homework and being prepared. We purchased our airline tickets 6 months ahead of time for a very good rate of $900. We did some serious research and booked early our hotel in Bangkok and resort in Ko Samui, confirmed and re-confirmed the bookings. We've arranged for transportation to/from the airports, worked out a deal for parking at O'Hare, hired a reputable (and cheap at $45/day) guide for Bangkok, and written a rough schedule of what we want to see/do while in Thailand. The internet is a marvelous tool. I wonder what we ever did without it! I've swallowed live Thyphoid and we've both been poked with a number of needles (me more than Colin ... read more
