Confirmed our hotel for dublin last week, we are reserved at The Castle Hotel for two nights at the very end of our trip (http://www.castle-hotel.ie/). Dublin should be a great final chapter for voyage. I'm hoping to walk the grounds of Trinity College for a bit, see the Book of Kells, walk the bridges over the Liffey, take in some museums, enjoy some great food, and of course take a tour of the Guiness factory! Extended weather forcast looks iffy for the first week...high 50s low 60s but some rain is in the forecast. After more than a year of talking then planning, then actually booking this trip, it is amazing that the first leg happens in just 8 short days from now!... read more

With only four weeks to go, travel preparations are picking up!! I bought my bike helmet and daypack for the trip yesterday. Still need a good rain suit...poncho just isn't going to cut it if we get caught in seasonal rains. It's a pretty nice day in Michigan today, so I plan on dusting off the bike and taking it for a spin today. The next few weeks I will need to get moving with that type of exercise. Geoff narrowly avoided disaster with our itenirary, following the rediculous fallout of a government shutdown...he almost had to return to Alaska from his temporary placement in Utah...which is where the journey is supposed to start for him. I'm glad things worked out and he gets to stay in Utah a little longer...gotta love our congressional heros... Brian ... read more

With less than five weeks to go, I realize I better get on a bike soon! In the past three weeks I have run two 5Ks so I at least have been getting a little into shape. But as my friend Joan reminds me often, I MUST get on a bike before I go... the next few weeks leading up to departure should hopefully motivate me to get moving....otherwise I'm going to frustrate my companions a great deal ("call me a taxi...I can't make it...OMG another hill???....ahhhh"). Our tiny compact car is officially reserved and ready for three tall guys (I'm being nice to Geoff here) to cram ourselves and our luggage into...that should be an adventure in and of itself! I doubt I will be able to fit in the back seat... Brian located an ... read more

With little over seven weeks to go, thoughts of this journey are starting to consume every waking minute. Each night I'm searching the internet for more ideas and excursions. The lastest interest is hiking through Connemara National Park (http://www.connemaranationalpark.ie/index.html). There are also some great spots near Kerry. Just emailed Geoff and Brian to see if they are up for such a trek. With St. Patricks day coming (and going) there have been many TV shows centered on irish food, travel, and entertainment, and I have enjoyed watching each episode I could find with mounting enthusiasm. Bobby Flay's Ireland show on the food network was especially good, as he showed us a few local places to go for some excellent irish chow. I also learned a lot about the change in the culinary treats ireland has to ... read more

I'm getting a lot of great suggestions and ideas from friends that have been to Ireland before. Three common themes are emerging as truth: 1) Don't plan ahead too much - enjoy making each day an adventure and rely on the locals to share with you the next best place to go and see; 2) No matter what direction we go in we can't go wrong - every sight is beautiful (north, south, east, and west); 3) Everyone has a great time in Ireland and wants to go back. Some background on our 'gang'; Brian has lived in Europe before and is a seasoned travelor, but now hangs his hat in South Carolina. He has been to Ireland once before and I am sure he is excited to go again (if only to enjoy the great ... read more

Ten weeks and counting! The biking portion of our trip is booked through Cycling Safaris (http://www.cyclingsafaris.com) on their Clare & the Burren tour. We will be starting at Ennis (Co. Clare), riding to Doolin (33m), then to Ballyvaughan (31m), then back to Ennis (28m). Each day we will be riding toward and along the coast line, stopping at various places along the way. I understand that many music festivals occur in this region during May, so I hope we can see and hear a lot of local musicians. Am also hoping we see spring in full bloom as we ride. During the weeks leading up to this trip we will be deciding where we want to go after the bike trip. ... read more

This is my first entry. I am planning on keeping a regular journal of my upcoming trip to Ireland, as well as at least a daily record of my actual trip. Two of my college roommates are joining me on this trip of a lifetime, Brian and Geoff. We are coming from different parts of the country, meeting in Pittsburgh, then flying together to Dublin. Once we arrive in Dublin (the next morning), we are renting a car to drive due west to Ennis in County Clare. This is where our 4 day/3 night bike trip will start.... read more

I just had a superb Easter Sunday! Luisa and Larry took us to Dexter, which is an hour's drive west of Detroit. Maret and I feel so glad they invited us over. I have never seen Easter celebrated this way before. Let me give you 4 reasons. First, it was snowing. I woke up as early as 6am and prepared myself for Easter mass. At around 730am we got ourselves seated inside St. Joseph Catholic Church which quickly got filled up with people in winter jackets. The snow wasn't that bad but it was freezing cold! They say Easter hasn't been this cold before; Either it would be sunny or just rainy... but not snowing! I heard from the news that this year's Easter is colder than last Christmas which was on the 40s. Church ... read more
