Sunday, Sept. 21 On the way to breakfast a lady from Conn. Saw our license plate and asked if we were really from S.C. The conversation continued as we were eating. She and her friends were on their way to Nova Scotia and wanted to know what we had done and where we had stayed. I ended up giving them a copy of our itinerary. Most of the time at continental breakfast, no one says anything to strangers. By the time we finished everyone in the whole room was sharing and we met a couple from Blue Ridge, GA. We entered the USA through customs with no problems - there were no cars in front of us. I realized later that there was a separate crossing for big trucks. As we drove along Highway 9 toward ... read more

We got up, to sunshine blue skies. We heard on the news that Hannah caused a lot of flooding further north from us and it seems she just skirted the Brunswick area because we got rain last night but nothing substantial. Loaded the car and headed to our yummy continental breakfast. Very typical carb weighted food but they did have coffee. We decided to find the nearest Wally-world. There we purchased a small styrofoam cooler and some grapes, apples, juice and snacky stuff. Walmart was interesting...not the typical ugly building but one that more or less lent itself to the architecture of the area with gables and a tudor looking exterior. Inside it was the same but it was rather nice outside. OK, so I'm an idiot. I took about 20 pictures before I realized that ... read more

At long last I was travelling again. The trip to Maine was surprisingly picturesque. In the morning Malcolm dropped us off at the AMTRAK station in Wilmington, and we caught the train north through Newark and New York to Boston. Although we didn't see anything of NYC, because the train tracks were all underground, the 'Northeast Regional' did take us past the beautiful sea front houses along the coast of Conneticut and Rhode island, before pulling into Boston after seven hours. Sadly, we were only in Boston for 10 minutes before our bus to Bangor pulled out, but we knew we'd be coming back. Before nightfall we got a taste of Maine's scenery, with thick dark forest on each side of the road making me wish that I had been healthy enough to bring my pack ... read more

Dear Father, and Mother and Aunty and Siblings and fellow co-workers and friends and random internet people who are reading this. It has been far far too long since my last entry and I am feeling very bad about it. However I have not had time to scratch myself since the onslaught of 24 hour workie people style summer camp which began what feels like years ago, I think it was mid..June?. At summer camp, about 7.30 am the charming bugle toots (I never got up right away) I'd teach during day, have meetings or work on horses in non teaching times, dinner for nearly 200 people was always an energetic affair and then there was an evening activity till 8 or 9. Then try and get insomniac teenage roommates to go to sleep and if ... read more

Packing for a year in China is not an easy matter. I've spent a good part of the day going through my cloths trying to decide what to take, what to leave behind for when I come back, and what to give to goodwill. So much of my wardrobe looks like stuff the a teenager would wear, even though I left my teens behind a little over three years ago. I'm used to a very casual work environment, really. At the library I could show up in my jeans and my "this is what a feminist looks like" t-shirt, and the candle store is even less formal than that. I'm not big on cloths shopping, but I really need to get some new stuff. I'm not thin enough to be able to just buy new cloths ... read more

Boothbay Harbor This past weekend was quite exciting. My cousin Christina got married in Boothbay Harbor Maine, so there was a gathering for the weekend, where I got to see my family and spend time with them. It was very nice. We arrived in the afternoon on Thursday, and checked into our hotel, which was a very nice hotel. It was very old, and was (what I hear) one of the oldest log cabins in Maine. Most of our family was staying there with us, in different room’s right down the hall. A few of the pictures are from there, playing guitar, etc. Cabbage Island Everyone met up at the docks in the afternoon, and we took a boat to Cabbage Island for a Lobster Bake. It was a very small island, but had a playing ... read more

I leave for China in 20 days. I finally booked my flight this morning, and I’m going to New York at the beginning of next week in order to get my visa. For the last two years I’ve known for sure that I wanted to work abroad after finishing college. Over the course of the last year every step that I’ve made has made my plans more solid and inevitable . It’s funny though. For months I’ve been talking to everyone about my upcoming job in China, and preparing, and it’s seemed absolutely unreal. Now I know for a fact that in less than three weeks from now I’ll be standing in Wuhan in front of a classroom of children. For the most part I’m excited. I’ve been studying Chinese with Rosetta Stone, and I’m interested ... read more
