June 24, 2009 We decided to go back to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory today since it wasn’t open when we went by there on Sunday (on our way to Bar Harbor). Luckily for us it was open today so we got to go up to the observatory. It was fantastic. This type of bridge with an observatory is the only one on the American Continent (North and South). There are only three bridges of this kind in the world. The other two are in Thailand and Slovakia. The total length of the bridge is 2,120 feet and the weight is 126 million pounds. After leaving there we went to Stockton Springs - this was an impromptu stop because we saw a lighthouse sign and wanted to investigate. It was fun trying to find it - along ... read more

Day 4 - Arcadia National Park - Maine It was such a rainy day today but we ventured out to tour the Acadia National Park. At the visitors center we purchased a CD driving tour. It was a good investment as it also includes photos of the places we were to see. The CD was very helpful. We traveled all around Mt. Desert Island and Acadia. We also saw the Bass Harbor Lighthouse which is located on the southern most tip of the island. We pretty much covered the whole 108 square miles of Mt. Desert Island. Before going back to our hotel we stopped at the Atlantic Brewery and had a sampling of their microbrews. We purchased a few of them to try out with Aunt Carol when we meet with her in a couple ... read more

Sunday - June 21, 2009 We had a leisurely breakfast at the Gosnold Arms looking over the bay. The blueberry pancakes were so good. Then we headed South to Pemoquid Point to see the lighthouse. The lighthouse was closed but the view was nice and we took some pictures by the water and surrounding area. After leaving there we stopped at Fort William Henry in Pemaquid. Next we went to the Breakwater Lighthouse in Rockland. This lighthouse is situated way out into the water where you have to walk along a breakfront to get to it. The breakfront is made up of huge flat rocks which lead to the lighthouse. We didn’t get to go out to it because the waves were starting to crash up and we didn’t want to get wet. It seemed pretty ... read more

…..and we’re off to Portland Maine today June 20, 2009. A rocky start… This was the first time we have ever been paged at the airport with “last call for boarding for K&RS!” Yes, that last email from Airtran seemed to get un-noticed - the one where they moved the flight up an hour. We received a couple emails which indicated the flight changed within minutes of the scheduled time but then I guess R stopped looking at them. Poor R - I think this was his job for keeping up with this. Another lesson learned “always double check those flight change emails” We realized it when we were checking our bags and the attendant said we were one minute late for bag check in. Luckily for us we made it to the plane and were ... read more

We arrived in Maine a week ago and it feels like heaven… Our last three days on the road included stops at Steve’s parents outside Baltimore, where I got to enjoy the short season of soft shell crabs - nothing better! On to Lauren’s in Farmington, CT the next day, with a side trip to the town in which I grew up - River Edge, NJ. Never a truer phrase - You can never go home again - the modest little home I grew up in has been torn down and replaced by a McMansion. It looked so out of place on Concord Drive with all the older homes…but I guess someone loves it. We did all the obligatory stops - St. Peter the Apostle Elementary School, River Dell Junior and Senior high schools, the local ... read more

The terrain in maine is very rocky and full of boulders, many with a veritcal height of over 24 inches. I've had surgery on one knee, and the other is pretty sore. I also twisted my ankle at least 3 times. My hiking trip for this year is done. I've returned home after only 109 miles on the trail. The condition of my legs will not allow my to go any further.... read more

Each time the bridge lifts to let a boat through a siren that sounds much like one from concentration camps in movies. There are two bridges right by our dock, our home, the government dock. Its almost become a relaxing sounds as the boat lulls us all to sleep like a child in mothers arms. But an unfortunate side effect as come from this ever so relaxing feeling. Sea legs are being developed and land legs are lost. It hit both Ashely and I at once in a tiny hat shop close to the bay. And now, no matter, sitting, standing or falling off a curb the world is moving and its unnerving. I've written a few entries but after losing my best entry so far to a faulty 'auto-save' function I've lost my passion for ... read more

At 5:30Am I woke up and took the 8:00AM plane to Newark, NJ than another to Boston, Massachusetts. My first impression of Boston was that everything was so modern and artistic, the "Logan" airport is probably the biggest I've seed yet. So far I'm already two days into the assembly, It's been interesting, I finally manage to make some friends, one of them managed to start a conversation with me by saying I looked like a lost circus girl sitting on the trunks while I was waiting for my mother's friend's husband to get the car from a hardcore parking lot traffic jam. He says (his name is David by the way) that he was gonna try to look for me tomorrow, oh well at least I won't be bored. The buildings here in Portland are ... read more

Hello to all, I've re-checked my gear, reducing the pack weight by 6 pounds. The new route is scheduled, not as agressive as the previous one. I will be heading to Baxter State Park in Maine on 5/27. I climb the northern terminus Mount Katahdin on 5/31, then head south. Hope all is well Joe Barnes... read more

TRAVELOGUE Thursday May 14, 2009 Bar Harbor, Maine Hello again everyone ~ We sailed into Bar Harbor, Maine around 8:00 a.m. It was a hazy day in Bar Harbor, no fog or clouds, just hazy. As we glided along the channel into Bar Harbor we noticed “our” Ghost Ship - The Margaret Todd - the four masted sailing ship that I took a picture of through the fog at sunset two years ago. She was anchored out in the harbor and because it is so early in the season, that is exactly where she stayed. After breakfast, we took the tender ashore and hopped on our tour bus. Today we were touring Acadia National Park, Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole, a mansion at the College of the Atlantic and the Oceanarium (to learn all about lobsters). As ... read more
