Wednesday, Sept. 25 Breakfast was at Sutton Country Store and Cafe - boy, did they had the bottles of jelly, jam, syrup, soups and anything else you can put in a bottle and Halloween candy bags. We drove along the interstate for the first couple of hours, around Albany. Then we crossed the Hudson to drive down the east river bank through Hyde Park. The route was more commercial than I had expected. We did not stop to tour any of the huge homes along that section. We crossed back over to the west bank at Beacon-Newburgh, NY. We followed Highway [View Full Entry]

Monday, September 22 We did not start our sightseeing until almost noon with repacking the entire truck and trying to get the oil changed - we had driven almost 4000 miles. We had a scrumptious breakfast at the Chinook Café in Conway, NH. The first two places we stopped to get the truck worked on were too busy to get to it. Finally at the Midas in North Conway, we got it done and on our way. Scenic Byway, the Kancamagus Highway, runs from Conway to Lincoln, NH. It is only 30 something miles but it took us several hours to [View Full Entry]

Sunday, Sept. 21 On the way to breakfast a lady from Conn. Saw our license plate and asked if we were really from S.C. The conversation continued as we were eating. She and her friends were on their way to Nova Scotia and wanted to know what we had done and where we had stayed. I ended up giving them a copy of our itinerary. Most of the time at continental breakfast, no one says anything to strangers. By the time we finished everyone in the whole room was sharing and we met a couple from Blue Ridge, GA. We entered [View Full Entry]

Friday, September 19 Our room faced to the east, therefore, we watched the sun come up without having to go out into the cool air. I went for a walk up to the top of the cliffs and along the scenic trail. Breakfast at the Cape was delicious. After breakfast Darcy drove us up the hill to the parking lot - he had to get a running start to make it up and around the first curve. When we got to the top, I could not find my carkeys. They were in the ignition, which was okay, since Mother had her [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, September 17, 2008 The dining room at the Inn was full for breakfast, so we invited a couple from Maryland to eat breakfast at our table. Lots of French speaking folk were eating in the room with us. It was a morning for running errands. We stopped at the Dollar Store to get a basket for the center console. Every time I put on brakes something comes sliding off the collection in the top depression. We found a basket and double stick adhesive and a lot of other things before we left there. Next stop was at the bank [View Full Entry]

Sunday, September 14, 2008 We packed up and left Martin’s River fairly early on our way to Baddeck on Cape Breton Island. Our first stop was in the Halifax area to see the Northwest Arm of the Halifax harbor. According to legend, that is where our great, great, great, great grandfather, Heinrich Strum, was ice fishing when a blizzard blew in and he froze to death in January of 1783. We made a short stop at the Aviation Museum near the airport. In Antigonish, we visited St. Ninian Cathedral. The regular service had already ended, but a special baptism for 5 [View Full Entry]

Saturday, Sept 13 We headed out after breakfast at the cottage and my morning walk down Silver Point Road. We were going to take the ferry at Riverpoint. On the way we saw signs posted for a Cranberry Farm, so we drove out Blue Rocks Road and followed the signs down some side roads until we reached the farm. The gate was open, but there was no one around. We parked the truck and realized that the plants enclosed within earthen banks were cranberries, covered in fruit that was in the process of turning from white to red. They had a [View Full Entry]

Saturday, September 6 When we started out on Saturday morning, everything was wet from showers in the night - the first bands of rain going out ahead of tropical storm Hannah. We ate breakfast at a Perkins just across the line into New Jersey. In New York, we drove through the Bear Mountain State Park. The clouds were sitting on top of the mountain, so the road to the lookout was closed. We took the Bear Mountain bridge across the Hudson River. For a while we drove through the countryside - with forest and large lakes. In Carmel, NY, we stopped [View Full Entry]

Friday, Sept 5 It was a foggy morning in Onancock, VA. In fact the schools were delayed two hours because of the fog. I took a morning walk from our B&B down to the docks. There are five churches along the main street. Breakfast was omelets made from fresh eggs provided by the ladies in the chicken coop in the backyard. The meal was delicious - but a lot more than we needed. As we drove north up the Delmarva, we took several small roads through the countryside and lots of corn fields and soybeans. There were fishermen at all the [View Full Entry]

Thursday, Sept 4 We filled up with gas in Goldsboro and then went to the Skillet Restaurant for breakfast. Mother had country ham since we were in hog raising country. We drove through tobacco fields on the way to Greenville. Took a side trip through some of the farms to get a picture. In Historic Edenton we had “Elevenes”(Elevenes is like afternoon tea but at 11:00 a.m.) at the Edenton Coffee House and Sisters Gallery with Anita & Glenn Andersen, friends who used to live in Charlotte. It was good to see them and catch up on what they are doing [View Full Entry]
