LOCATION: Acadia to Lubec, ME Acadia NP. Again we thought we would do some hiking but it was a downpour all day. So we drove into Bar Harbor and did the tourist thing for a while. We visited the Abbee Museum, a Native American Museum of the area , quite interesting. We continued our drive to the Eastermost town in the US---Lubec, ME. We drove out to view the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the easternmost point of land in the USA. The winds had to be 50 mph plus, and the rain was steady, we tried to get some photos. Then on [View Full Entry]

LOCATION: Camden to Acadia Camden Hills SP was a lovely area and we hoped to hike and bike, but the rain got in the way. We walked through Camden in the early morning. Camden is a harbor town built on a river and has a panoramic view of Pennobscot Bay, cute little shops, etc. We drove back to Camden Hill SP and up to Mt. Battie and tried to get some photos, a bit foggy and rainy. Undaunted we continued onto Belfast (guess how it got it’s name) another harbor town with wonderful shops. Off we continued to Acadia NP for [View Full Entry]

Last Day in MA and Traveling North June 4, 2006, Sunday. We met with our kids and grandkids to tour Boston. We got the trolley into town and visited the aquarium. Our lunch stop was at Fanieul Hall, we all enjoyed a different ethnic specialty, before we started out on a trolley tour of Boston. We returned to the Cape via the bus. Monday, June 5. We are on our way to Maine. We packed up and left the Cape driving to Maine. Our first stop was Freeport. We walked around the town and visited the outdoor shops. Bob found [View Full Entry]

Snowstorm in Maine
Snowstorm in Maine
-17 degrees and bucketing snow ... No worries mate!
We battled through the snowstorm in Maine while driving to a social function. In the car my sister, her husband and I were frantically trying to stay warm before we made a dash through the driving snow and into the venue. We awoke the next morning to find the whole neighbourhood blanketed in 9 inches of perfect snow providing a beautiful backdrop with an outside air temperature of -17 degrees celcius. Wait a minute now ... was this some kind of vivid dream? I'm from Australia and I have never experienced anything like this before! But that is one of the [View Full Entry]

A Solstice Pilgrimage For over ten years now I’ve traveled north to New England for Christmas. The drive is always too long, longer than the sunlit hours, stretching into travel advisories and severe weather warnings. Rush hour always hits somewhere along the way, be it Wilmington, Delaware, the New Jersey Turnpike or Connecticut. And yet every year I return to the north country, renewing my soul in its snow- covered hills. At least once a year I like to get out on my skis and feel the rhythm of kick-and-glide, kick-and-glide. There is a starkly beautiful border between trudg [View Full Entry]

Introduction

North America » United States » Maine
This is my first post on travelblog.com. Just discovered this through a Web-search. Anyway, this is going to be cool. First of all, I love to travel, but unfortunately not as often as other users who use this site, but I have always wanted to document and keep a journal of my important trips online. The two states in America that I spend most of my time are Maine (my home state) and Massachusetts (relatives...... and Sports events). Anyway, here is my biggest anticipation: Albuquerque in April 2006! My grandparents recently moved from Washington State to the Suburbs of Albuquerque. I [View Full Entry]

Lighthouse
This may be the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Have you seen it? I have:)
I spent the past weekend in Biddeford, ME (that’s Maine for all of you who don’t have your abbreviations memorized). We had a very smooth and easy, two hour ride on Amtrak to Meaghan’s hometown. Both Sr. Maria and I had never been to Maine so this was an adventure. Friday night we drove around Portland, ME (setting of many of Stephen King books) and looked at the HUGE OLD houses. They are massive homes of former maritime workers. Then, we went to the Portland Art Museum. Every Friday afternoon it is free to the public. Currently they are featuring [View Full Entry]

Still not gone yet. Thank you to everyone who has "subscribed" to my travel journal so far-- I salute you for your good taste. I promise I won't let it get to my head. But I will be charging a modest fee for viewing subsequent entries ($2.50). It's quite a deal. For you. I've been having very much fun over the last few days with my sister Alice and the 'rents; we've watched a movie or two, played some cards, given each other endless grief over things only we would notice. You know, real quality time with the fam. And guess [View Full Entry]

So, here's my first entry into the travel journal. I'm not technically travelling yet. But as you may have guessed from the title of this entry, it's just hitting me that I'll be out of the country for a year, starting (gulp) next Monday. I'm TERRIBLY excited. Been getting in the mood by reading up on Australian news, reading JTim's and William's blog from Japan (AGreatJapanTravelBlog), and having idle fantasies about life at UWA. It's really late right now- let's see, 1:45am. I should be going to bed. Getting started on this little proje [View Full Entry]
