Photos from 10-14-13 - on the way to Deer Isle Once again referring back to the Our House gallery, photos 18 & 19 were taken outside our basement entrance while we waited to leave for Deer Isle. When Jim mentioned Deer Isle as his choice for Jakub’s suggestion, my mind raced with many questions, suggestions, and the possibility of going to Stubdude’s a day early. No, that would be no good. There’s noway I’d want to leave this group experience before I had to. Coincidence or whatever, Stubby’s first name is Jim, ... read more

Photos from 10-13-13 - Pemaquid Lighthouse Long before we left home, VB made an event page for the trip, and on it Jakub made a suggestion. There were 4 couples going for 4 days, and he suggested we all take a day to decide where we shoot. My choice was Pemaquid. No one slept in this day because we might not be back till… well, we didn’t know. Even though it was a bit over an hour away, we were down in the rocks shooting by 6. Before my first shot and before the moment I’d forget about things like eating, I was way too cold to create. So I hustled back to the car for an overkill coat. Comfortably numb, I ... read more

Photos from our Harbor View House - 7 Harbor View, Rockport, ME Our house was a very, very, very fine house. No cats in the yard, but great views of Rockport Harbor. You can walk out the backdoor into the ocean. From the computer room where we all processed our photos to the magnificent ocean-filled backyard where we captured more, from the spacious common areas where we gathered to laugh to the luscious dining area where we savored our lobsters, this was the perfect spot to headquarter our fun. Again we must thank Yvonne for such a magnificent choice. Photo 4 is a reflection of our dining room table showing the view out the window. Photos 17 & 20 were taken on a concrete dock below our house. We were trying night shots and those are ... read more

Maine has been foremost on the list of October outings since 1991, and each visit has been centered around my cousin and his wife, Stubdude & Juno. Usually I’ll bring one or several friends to enjoy the fun, and the last few years have had the bonus of my daughter Celeste; but her mom always refused the 12-hour journey. This year’s visit, however, was attached to a photo excursion with 3 other members of the Northeast Photography Club, their wives and mywife. Woohoo! Barb had only been to Maine once with me in the 1980s. We had a great time taking Stubby back to his place in Bangor. He lived down the street from Stephen King and made his own beer. Now, ... read more

Weds:Back in the US of A, and so we needed to be checked by US Immigration - luckily this is not a service that has been closed down following the Republicans/Democratic standoff. I guess Bar Harbor might be called touristy, even tacky - on a sunny day (like today) it's cute!! We took the tender ashore and then walked one of the prettiest shoreline walks you can imagine - one snag, it was only a mile long. We headed inland and, shock, found a coffee shop and then, shock horror, JC bought a hat - see photo!! After more strolling we stumbled across a line (i.e. queue) at an ice cream parlour. Seeing the various sizes on offer, we were wimps and wisely settled for small cones (two enormous scoops!!) of gorgeous ice-cream - JC's was ... read more

Geo: 43.3839, -70.5453 We spent 2 days touring around Bar Harbor. It was a little hard with the national park closed. We went to a small beach. We saw a lighthouse. We drove around and looked at the colorful trees. We walked around the village. On Sunday we left Bar Harbor for Kennebunk Beach. This was mostly a one night stop. On the way down we toured Fort Knox and went up to the observatory on the bridge over the Penobscot Narrows. Its a huge bridge, with an observatory at the top of one of its towers. Its 420 feet above the river. Great views from there. Next up a drive to Concord and Lexington, Mass. The "shot heard round the world".... read more

Geo: 44.3875, -68.2044 We got up this morning to a beautiful day. Sunny and about 70 degrees. We went on several hikes around a couple of lakes. Its beautiful here. I'd say that about one quarter of the trees have turned either a brilliant red or yellow. What we thought would be a simple hike around the first lake, turned out to be quite a challenge. The path was all large rocks and boulders that had fallen down from the steep side of the mountain. Our bed and breakfast is very nice. The place is on the National Registry of Historical Places. It is a large house built in 1888. Tomorrow, we will go for a drive around the rest of the island and some more hiking. The weather is supposed to be a little cooler, ... read more

to finish off the last story at Peggy's Cove - sorry - We were also shown the area where the Swissair plane crashed in 1997, we saw the memorial and where the remains were buried. We stopped at a cafe for lunch - had some really nice fish - haddock and chips and salad. Our hosts told us later that the owners of the cafe had lost their 23 year old daughter in the plane crash and had come overseas to the funeral and ended up staying. So they bought the diner and are happy being there but strangely enough they don't visit the memorial nor do they attend the annual service. We had a great time on the bikes and would do it again. We enjoyed the what we saw of Halifax and it was ... read more

September 29-30, 2013 We have stayed the last two nights with friends at their beautiful home (we sleep in the guest house) on an island near Yarmouth, Maine. It's been a heavenly two days: toured the Casco Bay in our friends' boat, walked around the island preserve, visited the shops in Portland, and just enjoyed being with our friends. What a gorgeous part of the world this is! We've been pampered here and it's going to be hard to leave tomorrow!... read more

Hi, All -- There's a causeway which goes from Bar Harbor's harbor area to nearby Bar Island during low tide. Yesterday Bob and I walked partway to the Island and then turned around as the tide was coming in. We then sat on a rock and watched the drama -- people trailing out of the Island woods and noting to their dismay that the causeway had started to go under water in parts. Four only got water over their ankles; another pair waded through water up to their knees and looked rather distraught. They might want to check a tide table next time. The rest of the photos were taken during our eight days here in Acadia Nat'l Park and surrounding areas. Tomorrow we take off for Canada -- we're not quite sure where. We'll surprise ... read more
