NO GO: BOSTON AND NEW YORK CITY. TIME TO REGROUP. CHANGE OF PLANS. Today was good and bad. Starting with the good: First, en route to Portland, Maine from Camden, riding through Damariscotta, Maine where author Stephen King wrote many of his thrillers (perhaps I should have stopped and blogged here, though they would be considerably darker). Second: stopping in Wiscasset, Maine at a little shack after the second long bridge right by the river called Red's Eats for the top-billed "Best Lobster Rolls" in Maine, waiting in a lineup of 20 people for half an hour before getting to the window, ordering 2 lobster rolls for lunch, and being asked for $37.49. These better be damn good, I mean, we could have had 42 cans of Ensure for the same price. Truly, they were good, ... read more

It is Sunday morning and we have just ridden our bikes back into the centre of Bar Harbor from the not-downtown hotel. We wanted to take advantage of the sites without the crowds. The town is empty even though the Veendam cruise ship is anchored in the bay and tendering passengers back and forth. We walked around the town for an hour, took some photos, and made plans to spend the day driving around neighbouring Acadia Park on Desert Island. The rich and famous live here in massive, manicured to the hilt estates. Opulence, wealth, affluence, you get it. The Jone's outdoing the Jone's. There's no shortage of pleasurecraft anchored with both bow and stern lines, it reminded us of Avalon Bay at Catalina Island. We rode past spectacular beautiful scenic bays one after the other ... read more

Waaaaaaa. It's tooooooo hhhhhhhhhhhhoooooottttttttttttttt ...... (I did NOT, I repeat, did NOT say that out loud). BUT 34 degrees C at 10:00 o'clock this morning with increasing humidity as the day went on. Maine! Land of lobsterpounds, la-la, and no helmet laws. The border crossing at Saint Stephen, NB into Maine was on a bridge over the Saint Croix River. My US border agent clearly didn't attend the same charm school as my interrogator at the Soo, and we entered the US very seriously indeed. In front of us in the 3 car lineup was a large Harley, with two riders dressed in muscle shirts and small helmets ready to be ripped off once across the line. Welcome to the norm in this state. Only the gringos wear jackets, boots and gloves, and they're also the ... read more

So, once upon a time, we started this roadtrip, which I call “url=http://biggestballofstring.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/to-deadwood-south-dakota-in-a-disposable-car/Adventures in a Disposable Car“. As mentioned, the plan was to drive one way, from Calgary to Halifax, Nova Scotia, through the United States, and then fly home. BUT the car only made it to Omaha, Nebraska. We rented a car at the Omaha airport, but since we had no intention of returning it to the pick-up location, we weren’t allowed to drop-off the car in Canada. So, we immediately came up with a Plan B (or C or D), which was: we’ll drive the car to Bangor, Maine, and then catch the Greyhound Bus, from Bangor to Bar Harbor, and then, from Bar Harbor, we’d take the ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where ... read more

Camden is a lovely little town with a stream running through it -- behind buildings, under buildings -- ending in a pond which then cascades down rocks into the bay. We came across Camden two years ago just as the town was launching its annual Camden Windjammer Festivalin the Camden Harbor, a celebration of Maine's windjammer fleet. We were enchanted by the place. So we revisited Camden this fall and found it just as delightful. By the way, we returned home this past Sunday night. As the bills are now paid and the laundry done and all that stuff that piles up when one travels for six weeks completed, I'm now back to sending photo blogs of what we saw on our trip. They're not in any sequence; for instance, we were in Camden before we ... read more

Geo: 44.4258, -69.0069We had a great breakfast on the terrace/veranda of our Jonesport B&B and chatted with our hosts (New Yorkers), the place is for sale because their age is against them.....very tempting. This was the best B&B ever and on this brilliant sunny day, when we woke watched the sun rise while lying n bed in the spacius attic, through the panorama windows I { Liz} could move here tomorrow. But i'm told that winters are long and summers short and other than fantastic scenery everything is miles away. Cloudless blue skies certainly make the trip, even if the wind was a little chilly. Then the brother of the 'landlady' gave us a tour of the ground floor of the next door house which the Jonesport Historical Society are developing as their museum/meeting place. Much of it ... read more

Geo: 44.5328, -67.5989An ample breakfast, more chatting with our hosts in Alma a nd we were off again. So far we have driven about 3,400 miles). But it was a quicjk trip into Fundy National Park and we were soon out of the car again to embark on the first of three walks, one to a waterfall, one to a beach, and one to Caribou Plains (no Caribou and no Plains but plenty of trees, a peat bog and Beaver ponds - but no beavers)Then South toward the Canada/USA border with stops at the 'La Crloix' monument - the little island in the La Croix river which was the first Frence settlement in 1604 - there are monuments both in Canada and the USA on opposite banks of the La Croix river which marks the border. ... read more

Good morning Portland. So the day was overcast but we still had a full schedule and most of it was driving, so it wasn't too much of a problem. It is a neat little town. We did not get to see much of it on the drive in the previous night. There are some cruise ships docked across the street from the hotel. Those are some big boats. Don't forget to get more of the visit to Portland at this blog. (Link to follow). Maine Beer Company, Portland, Maine http://www.mainebeercompany.com/ Unfortunately, we were unable to get an official tour here. We arrived at 10 A.M. but the tour was at 2 P.M. But a tour wasn’t really needed here. The gift shop had a window that looked right out on to the production floor, so we ... read more

Whew, 22 hours transit time is a long poke, especially when it starts at 5:30 a.m., so you aren't able to sleep for the long leg across the Pacific! Looking back, it is all a blur of airplane meals (six of them?) and movies. The best I saw was The Joy Luck Club, culturally appropriate for a trip from China. But here we are back in Maine, having been picked up at the airport by Erika. We find that in our absence Dayton was in the news for having a domestic shooting incident and a 4.0 earthquake. Good thing we were away in the relative safety of China. Now we are reveling in having (1) western bathrooms, (2) drinkable tap water, (3) sheets on the bed as opposed to hot comforters, and (4) peanut butter. We're ... read more
