As I mentioned in my Introduction to The Big Island blog, we were travelling with friends (Chris and Amanda, and Taylor and Jaycee (the kids)), and had lots to see and do! One of the great things about travelling with children is that you get to do things you might not normally do, but have always wanted to do (like: camp at url=http://biggestballofstring.wordpress.com/2012/11/06/yogi-bears-jellystone-park-caledonia-wisconsin-milwaukee-area/Jellystone Park… or visit the url=http://biggestballofstring.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/if-life-gives-you-limes-make-margaritas-jimmy-buffett/Jelly Belly Factory… or the Jo... read more

It’s important to remember that the Volcano National Park and Volcano Village area are around 4500-5000 feet above sea-level and often COLD!!!! One time, we stayed in a cabin there (which had no heat…or walls…well, there were walls, but they didn’t quite reach the roof (the cabin was still a work in progress)…and the roof had a hole in it for the tree to grow through…loved the cabin! BUT it was COLD! It was so cold, I actually wore all the clothes I had in my suitcase, all at once, to bed. It didn’t snow, but it could have. So, bring a sweater. And, a raincoat. (The first time we were there, the rain... read more

Speaking of Volcanos, we spent the day in the Volcano area. As mentioned, Kilauea is the longest continuous erupting volcano in the world, erupting steadily since 1983. In 1983, it wiped out and buried Kalapana. (I plan to talk about Kalapana on Sunday’s blog…or maybe Wednesday’s…) The first time we went was in 1999, and we were able to walk out a couple of miles over the lava fields, from the end of the Chain of Craters Road, and see the red lava flowing down the mountain. You can still do that, apparently, but it’s a longer walk (MUCH longer, by hours and miles), and you need to do a LOT of research to learn where to go and what to take to make the trip safely: enough water, proper shoes, snacks, first aid kits, overnight ... read more

I said we were going to talk about Hawaii in this blog, and I thought that wasgoing to be “easy.” BUT, I can’t figure out where to start!!! Should I start with “Hawaii, the State”? “Hawaii, the Big Island, general information”? I’ve decided to start with “Hawaii, this time around – Day 1.” Going with people who’ve not previously been to Hawaii is always fun for me, because: we get to do things we did the first time we came, but maybe haven’t done since. OR, we get to do things we do every time, but they seem fresh and exciting, because they are fresh and exciting to someone! This particular trip takes place on The Big Island of Hawaii. (Almost all of my trips to Hawaii (state) take place on Hawaii (Island), called “The Big ... read more

Have you ever heard of the Balancing Rock of Digby? It is AMAZING!! I saw a tinypicture in the corner of a tourist magazine, and had to see it! It’s on the Digby Neck, on the opposite side of the almost-island of Nova Scotia from Halifax. It is so worth going to visit there! Everything’s interesting. Even the trip to get there! We went to Truro first, to watch the Tidal Bore. I talked about the Tidal Bore in my blog about Alaska, but the Truro Tidal Bore, on the Bay of Fundy, is the fastest Tidal Bore in the world! We were told it was a “must-see”, and when we got there, we were surprised to see peop... read more

If you love lighthouses, Nova Scotia is the place for you! There are over 160historical lighthouses scattered along the 7400 km coastline. In fact, Nova Scotia has the more lighthouses that any other province in Canada... although, really.. is that a surprise? there's not much competition - most of the country is landlocked. The oldest working lighthouse in North America is there - 82 feet tall, built in 1758, and located on Sambro Island! Thinking that's very old, I Googled to see how 1758 compares to the oldest working lighthouse in the world... and I found the Tower of Hercules, which is an ancient Roman lighthouse built some time late in the 1st century (probably during the reign of Trajan, betwe... read more

As mentioned last week, we took the CAT Ferry from Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and then drove around the south point of Nova Scotia and up the other side, to Halifax. It looked EXACTLY like I thought it should. When I was little, I had a book about some little kids who explored the rocks and caves in Maine, and something happened with a gigantic crab or lobster… I forget exactly what… and since I can’t remember enough about it, I can’t find it… but for my age group, it was a “thriller”… ANYway – all of the pictures and these big, giant boulders, and that’s exactly what Nova Scotia looked like. Like we were miniature in the land of giant..boulders. AND, it was misty and overcast often, which is exactly what it should be…in ... read more

So, once upon a time, we started this roadtrip, which I call “url=http://biggestballofstring.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/to-deadwood-south-dakota-in-a-disposable-car/Adventures in a Disposable Car“. As mentioned, the plan was to drive one way, from Calgary to Halifax, Nova Scotia, through the United States, and then fly home. BUT the car only made it to Omaha, Nebraska. We rented a car at the Omaha airport, but since we had no intention of returning it to the pick-up location, we weren’t allowed to drop-off the car in Canada. So, we immediately came up with a Plan B (or C or D), which was: we’ll drive the car to Bangor, Maine, and then catch the Greyhound Bus, from Bangor to Bar Harbor, and then, from Bar Harbor, we’d take the ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scot... read more

From somewhere in New York, we continued to Boston, through the Appalachian Mountains. Boston! there are SO MANY things to do and see there!! What do you think of when you think of Boston? Paul Revere? Celtics? Common? Tea Party? Fenway Park and the Red Sox? Cheers? CHEERS!! Of course! because “sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name!” Cheer is Cheers (1982-1993) on the outside and the Bull and Finch Pub on the inside. Apparently, the show was filmed “in front of a studio audience” on set, BUT that didn’t stop us from going in and sitting at the end of the bar, and yelling “Norm!!!” I know! HOW CLICHE!! But, I’m not embarrassed. I mean, seriously! we could not have been the first, and we sure won’t be the last! My best ... read more

Hi there everyone! So, I started this blog September 9, 2012, and had the goal of telling about some roadside attraction, a Big Ball of String sort of sight, every Wednesday and Sunday. Today (which is still Wednesday, where I live), is the first one I missed. I planned to talk about Boston, and I’m working on that particular blog. But, because of Series of Unfortunate Events, I haven’t finished, and I don’t want to rush it. I did consider trying to finish it tomorrow, but I’m not sure that the Series of Unfortunate Events will be over by tomorrow, so! Boston on Sunday! xoxoxoxox... read more
