Shelley and I departed Hadley’s Point Camp Grounds yesterday. Taking Highway 3 into Ellsworth for some light shopping and supplies refresh before heading back into Canada. We stopped in at TJ Maxx for a little shopping, then over to the LL Bean Factory Outlet. The Outlet was fantastic; Shelley liked that all the clothing was actually organized into sizing properly - nothing was just shoved together Willy-nilly for her to sort through. Refreshing. I found some more clothing items and we even picked up a little flotation device for Maggie to wear when we are boating or kayaking. Departing here, the directions took us up Highway 3 and had us turning right onto North Street. North Street, as it turns out, is “highway” 179 - a small two lane (one lane each direction) that sloped from ... read more

This morning we got up convinced that the rain was finally a thing of the past, and ready for a beautiful day exploring Acadia National Park. Breakfast at the hotel this morning was great, and we left with plenty of energy, and a desire to hike. It was chilly, about 61 degrees and the fog was really thick. It was so thick that most of the first scenic views were views of fog and nothing else. But the weather report called for the fog to burn off in the afternoon and the temperatures to rise to a blistering 72 degrees. Acadia National Park is laid out with a Loop Road that surrounds the central Cadillac Mountain, with about half of the Loop Road being one way.So we started by following the road in the one-way direction, ... read more

We woke up this morning to yet another dreary day in New Hampshire. We've done pretty well avoiding the actual rain, mostly we've only been caught in a little drizzle. This time was much the same, it had rained all night and the roads were still wet, but the rain seemed to have subsided, though it was 59 degrees.. Not taking any chances, and as a windbreak to the cold, we went ahead and put on our rainsuits. Our hotel did not have breakfast, but there was a McDonald's just down the street, so we loaded up the bike and headed over for the Big Breakfast. While there, we encountered what we always do in the mornings at McDonald's - the towns senior citizens gathered together for the 99 cent coffee. This time they were mostly ... read more

Geo: 44.5292, -68.4032Today's destination is Bar Harbour - one of those not to miss tourist places which one can manage for a couple of hours only. The area is well known as a vacation destination. Our route there was interesting. We had originally planned on taking the highway but our host last night suggested an alternate route. We drove to a ferry dock at Back Bay and boarded the NB ferry to Deer Island. The inter-island ferries in NB are free. We crossed the island to catch another ferry to Campobello Island. That was an interesting experience. It is a privately owned barge which is attached to a small tug like boat. When the ferry launches, the barge is adrift until the tug switched sides. It is the first time I have driven aboard a ferry directly from the ... read more

"Give me reasons to believe That you would do the same for me" We had to backtrack a couple of miles to get some blood pressure medication for Jan, then with bass drum thumping and Philip Phillips slashing his guitar we were Gone, Gone, Gone to Maine. We deliberately took a slight detour to take the road through Smugglers Notch and Stowe which Men's Journal had just listed as one of the 20 most thrilling rides in America. It was beautiful, but totally devoid of thrills. I should re-write their article from my own experiences (driving over 17 miles coming down from King's Canyon without once touching the gas is one I might list, or the one lane road along the ridgeline in Grand Staircase-Escalante, or the road BEYOND Hana, or the West Maui Mountain road ... read more

09/22/2011 Continuation of our second week. Rained all day, and foggy. We drove around a bit, and ended up visiting Maine State Prisoners Woodworking Store. It was very interesting, and one could spend a great deal of money, if you enjoy woodworking. This evening we had sirloin steak, potatoe, and corn on the cob. Watched "Message In A Bottle," for the ladies, then "Another Pair of Aces," for the guys. 09/23/2011 Today we moved closer to Bar Harbor to stay at Patten Pond Campground. You will see pictures of the new and old bridge that crosses the Penobscot Narrows. Ellsworth had a beautiful riverfront walkway and park, and that evening we had a fish fry dinner at Duff'y's Restaurant. 09/24/2011 Raining and foggy. Went to Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park. Visited Thunder Hole, Otter Point ... read more

9/19/11 Leaving this morning for our first stop in Maine, and our first lobster(lobstah)! Will be spending four nights at Saltwater Farm Campground in Thomaston, Me. Temp dropping into the 40's tonight. Had Leta's leftover soup tonight. 9/20/11 Visited 3 lighthouses. Marshall Point, where if you are familiar with the movie Forrest Gump, you will recognize it as one of his turn around points on his run across the U.S.. Owl Head lighthouse, because of the owl head in the rocky cliff, even though it is hard to see because the beak has eroded over time. Rokland Headwater lighthouse, where there is a 7/8 mile granite walkway, that Shelby and I walked, while the ladies sat on a bench and watched, until they got cool then they returned to the truck to wait. Ellsworth Maine, Woodlawn Museum On Thursday, we hit the road again and this time we headed east to Ellsworth on the northern edge of the peninsula. Yesterday, during our visit to the Wilson Museum in Castine, the Woodlawn was recommended to us by one of their staff as an excellent example of a Maine country estate, so today we decided to give it a try. The Woodlawn is a 180-acre historic estate that was the residence for three generations of the Black family. The exterior of the main house was going through a total restoration at this time and is complete covered with staging, so I got no pictures. The grounds have many interesting features such as barns, gardens and a six-court competitive croquet lawn. The interior of this historical mansion contains a well-maintained extremely intact ... read more
