Eek! Three suitcases later I realize that I've overestimated the size of my luggage and underestimated the size of my Madrid and the Mediterranean wardrobe. I set up this travel blog because I'm going to be all over the place for the next 3-4 months and this is an efficient way of letting everyone know which country I'm in and what I'm up to. I'll be based in Madrid for the fall semester of my junior year. There are about 35 other American University students doing the Madrid and the Mediterranean program with me. Yesterday I received an e-mail of my schedule for the next 3 weeks, but that's all I've been given until I arrive in Madrid. I'll be staying in Madrid Saturday night. On Sunday I leave Madrid for a two week Spanish immersion ... read more

Hello Everyone! Well, I have managed to get all my ducks in a row. I have my passport, visa, vaccinations, a purse that can't be slit with a razor blade, thermal underwear, lots of scarves, and some nice warm sweaters. All that's left is to fly around the globe and make a home on the other side of the planet. Wish me luck! I love you all! Love, Meagan... read more

Next stop: Bedford, Indiana. Yep, the home of Indiana Limestone. It also was the home of more caverns! yay! This time, our cavern tour was entirely by boat. Yep, we went down into the US's longest underground river. We bumped along in a big metal tub with our guide, a boat light and a flashlight. It was a little funny, but very cool. We learned a lot about the ecosystem that can exist in complete darkness, and the oddities that have adapted to teh lack of light. There were little transparent fishies that are blind, crayfish that can live for three year without food by eating thier own claws (they wait for food to come in with flooding), and bats and frogs that come in in the winter to escape the freeze. It stays a chilly ... read more

Day 6: We found America for Sierra. The quintessential all-American town is Sidney Nebraska, home of Cabela’s sporting goods. This is another of many dying agricultural towns of the Midwest. Felt like we were driving through a graveyard, with the markers the dead family farms - heritage barns collapsing and paint-peeling houses boarded shut in the midst of GMO corn and other crops planted right through the lawns and up to the doors. Then occasional mega silos and metal warehouse barns signaling the true owners of the prairie. With the fog settled almost on the ground it was just plain spooky and depressing. I wanted to play Ferron for effect, but we settled on boozy Edith Piaf instead. Cabela’s has pulled Sidney up and out, a mega employer like Walmart distribution centers we see. They hire ... read more

We spent a week in our childhood hometown in Indiana, visiting family and old friends. Danielle's neice and nephews went canoeing with us one day, which was awesome. We wish we had brought a waterproof camera with us! We took two canoes, found a couple of rope swings, and had a great day in the sun. Paul worked on an old mustang a lot, which we had bought over Christmas to sell. It just needs a few minor repairs and it'll be in near perfect shape. Danielle went to a couple of soccer games that the same neices and nephews were in, and then mostly we just relaxed with friends. Also, Echo had a new friend to play with while we were there. Danielle's neice just got a Yorkie puppy named Bella, who only weighs 3 ... read more

When the horse sees his stable, it's hard to stop him from galloping home. Mark and Millie are a bit like that now. We've traveled through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and have stopped for the night in Elkhart, Indiana -- about 20 miles east of South Bend. From here, its about 11-12 hours to York. It was tough but Mark agreed to stop in Wisconsin for cheese at Elliot's request. We had a nice little happy hour (sans drinks) of cheddar, brick and onion cheese driving through Madison. Despite traffic, we also enjoyed the Chicago skyline with Mark wishing he had time to stop off at Gene and Giorgetti's, a favorite steak place in town. I asked Mark what he like to add to this entry. He'd like to gripe about today's tolls -- about $10 in ... read more

Columbus, Indiana is a strange place. It's an industrial, company town, home to Cummins Diesel, that happens to have some of the best architecture in the US. The philanthropist J. Irwin Miller offered to pay the architects' fees for the public buildings, not for their construction expenses. While this arrangement doesn't result in architecture on a monumental scale, it does result in clever solutions to architectural problems faced by many small, American towns. The best buildings in Columbus are Aero Saarinen's North Christian Church and Robert Venturi's Fire Station Number 4. Saarinen's church is a sublime piece of serious, formal modern architecture. The drive across the lawn and through the pew-like parking lot is also something ... read more
