Saturday, 10:55 p.m., Millie pulled into our driveway (or actually, Mark backed her in). We are indeed home and looking forward to sleeping in our own beds tonight. Actually, the kids are already in bed and we've already poured the wine (into real crystal glasses) so I thought I'd do a next-to-last entry in the travel blog with the hopes one of the boys will wrap things up tomorrow. Nothing like finishing the trip with a splash and a little rock and roll. The surprise stop to Cedar Point, where my sister and her family, inlaws and a bunch of friends were staying for the weekend was a hit. According to Elliot, this was one of his dreams in life. He didn't get on all 16 roller coasters but did go on quite a few ... read more
When the horse sees his stable, it's hard to stop him from galloping home. Mark and Millie are a bit like that now. We've traveled through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and have stopped for the night in Elkhart, Indiana -- about 20 miles east of South Bend. From here, its about 11-12 hours to York. It was tough but Mark agreed to stop in Wisconsin for cheese at Elliot's request. We had a nice little happy hour (sans drinks) of cheddar, brick and onion cheese driving through Madison. Despite traffic, we also enjoyed the Chicago skyline with Mark wishing he had time to stop off at Gene and Giorgetti's, a favorite steak place in town. I asked Mark what he like to add to this entry. He'd like to gripe about today's tolls -- about $10 in ... read more
Elliot and Kevin’s Thoughts from the Road: Yo, Yo, Yo. Hi and all that stuff. We’ve been 14 states in the United States so far. Best state for finding animals: Montana (Kevin) and Wyoming (Elliot) Best state for canyons: Arizona (Elliot) and Utah (Kevin) Best place for swimming in river/stream: Slide park in Arizona (Elliot) and Yellowstone River in Montana while whitewater rafting (Kevin) Best pool swimming: Oklahoma (Kevin) and South Dakota (Elliot) Best place for eating pie (Elliot’s entry): Anywhere Worst roads: Oklahoma (Mark) Best disco party: At the Marriot in Page, Arizona when Mom and Dad were sitting outside on the porch and we were suppose to be sleeping but were discoing and having pillow fights (this is the first they are hearing about this). I (Kevin) decided to each a cheeseburger in ... read more
Yesterday we were able to drive by Mt. Rushmore and stop and take pictures but because we weren't willing to park 3 miles away and hoof it up the highway, we decided not to go into the park with the other 20-30,000 people visiting for the holiday. We got lucky today. Elliot suggested we drive by for another look and since it was early morning (my early morning being 9:30) the park wasn't crowded. We not only easily and quickly got into the park, but Millie (just by pure luck based on other RVs which arrived before us) was parked right outside of the front entrance. Better than handicapped parking. Hmmm... on second thought, maybe the park rangers assumed Millie needed a brake. Kevin did all the activities to again become a Jr. Ranger. If ... read more
We haven't crossed the finish line yet, because we aren't home. But we have visited every destination on our itinerary with the exception of Zion which we traded for a couple of extra days in Sedona. Gladly. It's been almost three weeks. Elbow to Elbow. We haven't killed the kids or each other and they haven't run away with the circus. In fact, tonight, we're sitting about five miles from Mt Rushmore having seen both the national monument and the Crazy Horse Monument earlier this afternoon/evening. Early today, we did the Deadwood Museum and a Gold Mine, where the kids panned for gold. Mark popped the celebratory bottle of champagne after the kids went to bed guaranteeing trouble to come on the way home. The vacation is essentially over. All we have to do is ... read more
Untitled To get from Ten Sleep to Buffalo, Wyoming (and then to where we are now -- South Dakota's Black Hills -- you have to travel over Big Horn Mountain and climb to 9,966 feet through Powder River Pass. While it is only about 70 miles, it took us nearly 2 hours with Millie traveling winding uphill mountain roads for half of that time. Alot of anxiety on our part for Millie, especially when we needed to stop half-way up the mountain because of some new, nasty sounds coming from her. After a rest, though, she did fine and we had a long stop in Buffalo before finishing the Wyoming leg of the trip. There are more hills than people in Wyoming. We saw antelope and cattle along the drive and had what felt like ... read more
Somewhere in Wyoming North America » United States » Wyoming By 4Royce July 1st 2007 Here are the picts from yesterday's Rafting Trip. We're in nowhere Wyoming in a campground with a group of Horseman/Campers who are spending the week here and riding horses in the mountains. It's actually an RV park and Horse Hotel. Yes, I am indeed staying at a Horse Hotel. On the drive out from Yellowstone, we did some fishing in the beautiful Yellowstone lake (nothing caught) before a white-knuckle trip down the mountain to exist the East entrance of the park. Windy mountain dirt roads (under construction) with no guardrails. It sent me to the back of the RV yet again with my 7-... read more
Elliot's Corner: Well the title pretty much explains itself. We're still having fun. Today we went on a white water rafting trip. First time for all of us. It was soooo fun. We got soaked. Our guide's name was Carl. When we went through Yellowstone today and yesterday and saw: a ton of elk, a couple bison, a couple mule deer, a bald eagle and nest, an osprey and nest, and a coyote. We also went to a local rescue zoo with bears and wolves and did this program where we got to hide food for the bears. The bears were not in the cages then. Well I cant think of anything else to say soooo... I LIKE PPIIEE PPIEE PPIIEE PPIIEE PIE.... see ya -__- -_____- -_- ... read more
Traveling through 4 states (Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) went well for Millie, who is now having a couple of day's break in a nice campground in West Yellowstone, less than a mile from the park's West entrance. We spent a good bit of time in the park today and were thrilled to see a herd of Elk within 10 minutes of entering. The boys have also pointed out bison, mule deer, prairie dogs and either a bald or golden eagle's nest with the hopes of seeing a bear and moose during the trip. The geysers, hot springs and mud pots were really amazing and we'd like to see more tomorrow. We had dinner overlooking Old Faithful as we waited for the eruption which occurs anywhere from 40 to 90 minutes. This is our fourth ... read more
