I was up and showered by 8 a.m. and set about packing my stuff so I could load it quickly after today's races. Rich and I rode to the track about noon and made our way to our seats (1 and 2, in Stand J, Section 9, Row JJ). The weather was sunny and clear with low humidity and a pleasant breeze. We got out of the track after the races with remarkable ease and were back at Rich's house in plenty of time for him to shower and make his 6 p.m. dinner engagement. I loaded the bike and, after getting a briefing on the closure of the I-74 westbound interchange on I-465, set out for Crawfordsville and Lauri and Jim's place. Rather than follow the recommended detour of exiting at 38th street and backtracking ... read more

I got up about 7 a.m., showered and rode to Shaprio's Delicatessen for breakfast with my Indianapolis BMW Club friends. Ordered turkey hash from the bizarre-looking cashier with the heavy blue eye shadowed raccoon eyes. Rich arrived from his triathlon about 10 a.m. and we headed for the track about an hour later. The traffic management this year was remarkably good and we got good parking spaces in the infield. We cruised the vendors and I picked up some accessories for the GoPro HD video camera - a spare battery, a 16GB SD card and a chest mounting strap. The bike events were fun, especially the H-D race at the end of the day. The bad news came when I pulled my Garmin Zumo 550 out of the tank bag, which had been stuffed into my ... read more

I packed the bike last night, so I was ready to roll out before dawn. I pulled out of the driveway at 6:15 a.m. with the GPS display still in night mode. The sun cleared the horizon by the time I got to Paragould and I spent the next half-hour riding into the blinding sun before the road angled and gave me some relief. I gassed at Boomland,, stopped for a quick McBreakfast at West Frankfort, Ill., and gassed again at Effingham, Ill. By the time I got to the Brazil, Ind. exit on I-70 it had become apparent that the rest of the way to Indy would be a miserable slow slog on a road choked with truck traffic, so I rode up Ind. 59 through Brazil to U.S. 36 and then Ind. 136 to ... read more

Indianapolis, the capitol of Indiana, has a sedate reputation. Many people, even those who live in the state, call it “Indiana-no-place”, meaning a city where the most exciting thing is a huge Civil War memorial downtown. This reputation has some basis in fact; the city is the very low key capitol of an even lower key farming state. The reputation is also unfortunate, because Indianapolis has things worth seeing. I spent the day at a few of them. Indianapolis Motor Speedway My first spot was the only reason most people know the city exists, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is one of the largest and oldest racetracks in existence. It was built in 19... read more

I planned to attend the Indianapolis Travbuddy Meet-Up right from its inception. Months later, I had it penned on my travel calendar. Even though Indiana is not one of the destinations on my "Bucket List", it happened to be one of the 50 states of the United states I had not visited yet. I will need to do a recount of the states I have visited, since I added a few last year, and some this year. In the 3 years I have contributed to Travbuddy, one of the things I have enjoyed most is the ability to travel to meet other travelers like myself. Now even though the meet-ups normally have nothing to do with discussing travel, and more like drinking, eating and taking a bunch of photos, it brings the faces and names together. ... read more

In a few months I will be travelling to the US of A! for the first time! I am very excited, where am I going? no not NCY, or Vegas, Miami? I wish...no instead I am hitting up the state of Indiana... People look at me strange when I say thats where I'm headed, " she does know thats not a very big tourist destination right?" Yes, I am aware..." well do you intend to travel anywhere else?""*sigh* Nope, I'm going all that way, literally, to the other side of the world and spending the whole month in Indiana...Yee Haa cowboy! I haven't really researched Indiana, I don't know what there is to do there, if anyone has any suggestions I am open to hearing them. I do however know it is going to be cold, ... read more
