Leaving Omaha’s five inches of snow kicked this trip off in the perfect way; increasing the anticipation of Hawaii, and more importantly the weather, ten fold. This trip is kind of a big deal for me as I am traveling with my girlfriend of six months Kim. She is active and has an adventurous side so I am excited to see how this week plays out. Kim and I left the house at four thirty in the morning, threw our bags into the cab and took off for the airport. Au revoir snow. The plane ride was fine, the distance was nothing compared to the flights to Thailand. The only irritating thing was that the plane was full of blue hairs who were wide awake and chatting like it was social hour throughout the leg to ... read more

Since my brother, sister, and brother-in-law live in Waimanalo, I feel a familial obligation to make the trek at least once a year. Their house in the country is set on 3/4 acres and surrounded by lush plants on two sides and a neighbor's stable on the third. The true charm of their home is the Lanai. A covered, enclosed porch from which one can sit and enjoy the sounds of donkeys, roosters, and birds. Across the street is a beautiful garden that is hidden from the rest of the world and provides more plant life to the already jungle-like scenery. Because they live in the country, the beach is five minutes away by car. This may seem undesireable to some, but it is actually a perfect arrangement for me. The best beach near their home ... read more

Another day in Paradise Ventured futher around the island today. It's easy driving once you get out of Waikiki, which is mostly one way streets. Feel quite at home really, what with McDonalds, KFC & Burger King, all within walking distance. However, we have resisted so far! Ate at planet Hollywood last night, al fresco. Went to the Sea life park, as seen in 50 first dates. Not huge but still entertaining. They have the only Whalphin in the world, it was an accidental breeding of a killer whale & an Atlantic dolphin 22 years ago, it's pretty big. I guess in the dolphin world, size also matters, lol. On our way there we stopped at a few scenic points and took in some breathtaking views. Sampled a few beaches untill we found THE ONE! Check ... read more

The people of Hawaii can be described as racially diversified, though the population of the mainland U.S. is beginning to appear so too. However, though the racial make-up of the rest of the U.S. seem to be predominately Caucasians, Blacks and Hispanics and a minority of Asians, in Hawaii, is seems more to be East Asians, Southeast Asians, Hawaiians and other Polynesians, Caucasians including Hispanics and Blacks. Also significant are the people of mixed racial background of the above mentioned races. Maybe some of the photos can do justice to what I’m trying to describe. It was taken during a parade to honor the University of Hawaii Football team that won the WAC Championship, but also included other UH teams and Local High School teams. The photos featured here are of a small Southeast Corner of ... read more

Yesterday we finally made it to the beach. I wanted to go again today, but the sunburn just won't allow me to do that. It's not too terrible, but it's enough to keep me off the pretty beach. We went out to Bellows AFB, which during the week is for military families only. Absolutely gorgeous view! And there were maybe twenty people along the mile or so of coastline. I read and enjoyed the sun, and Jerry played in the water like a kid. Then last night we hopped over the the Navy Exchange and I got something very nice! A lovely Coach purse! I will send pictures when I get home, as it is currently in its pretty little (and by that I mean big) bag and packed in my suitcase. I also got ... read more

Today the folks headed out to other islands. They'll continue on in Kaua'i, Maui and the Big Island for another week. We all suited up and devoted our morning to "better beach": pails, chairs, umbrellas, towels, boogie boards, and not really enough sunscreen. We Continentals have to make a conscious effort not to need to be running off to do the next thing, but it was well worth it! We spent a good several hours with the surf and sand. Of course, there was a next thing to run off to eventually, and a next thing after that. The owners of our rental establishment had recommended a local place, just down the road, for horse and pony rides, and I thought this would be the perfect thing for our 7-year-old travel companion's birthday present. What we ... read more

This morning, Judy and John left our group to go off on a tour of the other Hawai'ian Islands we we were on our own for the remainder of the trip. At this point, we didn't feel like we'd spent enough time at the beach, so we decided to do just that for our morning activity. I had decided that I was going to try this boogie boarding thing I'd heard so much about, and, surprisingly, Laura and Barb both wanted to try it, too. So, we grabbed some beach chairs, an umbrella, the boogie boards, and as an afterthough, I grabbed a mask, snorkel and some fins. Cheryl stayed behind for a little quite alone time. When we got to the beach, the surf was bigger than I remembered it from days past, though, so ... read more
