We started off our day with a stop in a the café across the street and had coffee and cake for breakfast, and then made our way to the river. It was a pretty hot day already, so we meandered across the Karlův most(Charles Bridge), which turns out to be a nice pedestrian-only bridge with great view of the river and the castle. We dodged gawking tourists, buskers, and hawkers, stopping occasionally to get a selfie or a photo of the castle, and got to the other side, and it turned out there was both a Starbucks and a tram ticket machine, so we stopped for iced lattes (did I mention it was a hot day?) and bought some tram tickets. After a while, we decided to head on up to the castle (Pražský hrad) so ... read more

Today we slept in a little bit, missed the pension's breakfast hours, and so we took our time getting ready, and went in search of breakfast or lunch or something. We stopped in at one of the touristy restaurants (I think it was the one at U Prince), and got lunch, which turned out later on not to be what we wanted; the day was very hot, and instead of fueling up for the day, we should have done something light, and then something light later on. Lesson learned. We wandered around Prague's old town just looking at stuff. We stopped at the Týn Church, hoping for a peek inside, but it was closed to visitors, so we stopped and took a look at the concert flyers to see if there was anything of interested (I ... read more

Today, we leave Dresden and travel to Prague. Dieter told us "no alarms", so we set our alarms for an hour later than usual, and got enough later that we're pretty sure we satisfied him. We had the usual breakfast, and then went on a driving tour of various other things he wanted to show us, the most important being the "milk shop". We drove around, and he told us all kinds of stuff, most of which I don't remember because I mostly wasn't all that awake (Cheryl may have more details on what we saw from the car). But we eventually ended up in the Äußere Neustadt of Dresden, and we stopped and parked so that we could step into Pfunds Molkerei, or the "milk shop". Sadly, they did not allow photos, so I didn't ... read more

We had to be gone earlier this morning because some inspector was coming by to inspect the building Dieter and Gudrun live in so that the owner of the building could refinance or something. So, we got up earlier than we have been, and were out of the house early, and took the Straßenbahnback to the city center again. Today, the main attraction was to be Der Dresdner Zwinger, a palace full of wondrous things, from the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon, to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, to the Porzellansammlung. First, we went to the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon, where we bou... read more

After another late night, it was another not-so-early-but-early-enough morning for us. We had two things on the docket for today: the king's hunting lodge, Schloß Moritzburg, and Meißen, a nearby city containing a porcelain factory and another castle and impressive cathedral. After the usual groggy, quiet breakfast, we piled in the car again, and headed out for Moritzburg. First, though, Dieter took us on a slow drive through Hellerau, known as the "Garden City". It seems to be made up almost completely of very small houses and apartments, each with a small garden with flowers or vegetables or both; this makes for a beautiful environment which appears to be very quiet and slow-paced. It is also the home of the Festspielhaus Hellerau, which Dieter drove by for us. It h... read more

After another late night, we were up earlyish again, had the usual breakfast, and then piled into Dieter's Volkswagen and headed off towards Festung Königstein (King's Stone Fortress), which is quite a ways southeast of Dresden, towards the Czech Republic, and affords awesome views of Sächsische Schweiz, and the Elbe River, plus a distant hazy view of both the Czech Republic and of Dresden. The fortress itself is up high, huge, built into a giant rock, and as far as I can tell, completely unassailable except by a single road with several very defensible gates. According to Dieter, the fortress has never been captured, although, in 2014, the idea of capturing a fortress is a bit quaint; I think you'd just ignore it and go around. Nevertheless, it is p... read more

Today was day one of the Dieter Tour, beginning with the Altstadt (old city; ironicially, the Altstadt is newer than the Neustadt, the new city). We had a very familiar breakfast of Brötchen, Käse, Wurst, Butter, Marmelade, Kaffee und Orangensaft, and then headed out by Straßenbahninto the city center. We hopped off and walked a short way to the Brühlsche Terraße which overlooks the Elbe, the Augustusbrücke, and parts of the old and new cities (the new city is across the Elbe from the old city). From this park, you can see all kinds of stuff; it's a good Überblick (overview) of what's around: the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), Semperoper (opera house), the Hofkirche (a Catholic cathedral fo... read more

After a short train ride, we arrived in Dresden, and were met on the platform by Dieter and Gudrun, dear friends of Arnold and Doris, Andrea's parents, and also dear friends of Cheryl, who had stayed with them in 2005 with Andrea, and again in 2008 with Laura. I was nervous about meeting them because I had been told by numerous people that they were excited to meet me, and frankly, that's a lot of pressure. But, as I shook Dieter's hand, I said "Ich bin glücklich, Sie kennenzulernen.", and he broke out into a great big grin and said "Ah! Without accent!" So, that happened. Gudrun was a ways down the platform, and after Cheryl got a big hug from her, I shook her hand, too, and decided to mix it up, saying "Freut mich, ... read more

Our stay in Berlin was over, so we had one more breakfast in the breakfast room, bid farewell to our hosts at Pension Peters, and made our way to the Hauptbahnhof to catch our train to Leipzig. It was another ICE (inter city express), and we had reserved first class seats, so naturally, our car was almost empty; there was only a single passenger other than us. The train ride to Leipzig is only about an hour, so we didn't have time to get uncomfortable or sore or anything, and actually, I barely had time to drink my coffee before we got to the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof. We disembarked and found the exit we needed and headed across the street to our hotel, and checked in. It turned out to be a pretty nice room, with air ... read more

Today was a "no-museum" day. So, naturally, we went to Charlottenburg Schloß, which is a museum. :) By the time we were ready to leave the room, we decided to just have lunch, so we found an Indian place on the way to the bus we were going to catch. It was a nice place, and the proprietor (I assume she was the proprietor) was very pleasant and put up with our German (to the point of asking where we learned it). Cheryl had lamb korma, and I had a lamb and chicken biryani, plus we had samosas as an appetizer, and rounded it off with garlic naan. The food was tasty, but way too much; even having eaten only half of our entrees, we were stuffed. We hobbled to the bus stop and caught a ... read more
