August 26, 2010 Aloha, Hawaii!! After hours of travel, we finally made it to the Big Island and at our resting desgtination of Hilo! Now Boarding We enjoyed the luxury of flying first class. This was a major benefit for a six hour flight. I was surprised that we were on a 737, as my previous 6+ hour flights were all on 747s. It was an older plane, no movie screen. Luckily, Alaska had these nifty devices, about the size of a portable DVD player, with pre-programmed TV shows, new movies, games and more. The main attendant for our section of the plane had an amusing take on his job. For example, during the safety brief he recited, "As you know, smoking is prohibited on this aircraft. And it will also shorten your life." And there ... read more

We’re back in Hilo today, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The main thing to do in this port is to go to the Volcanoes National Park, which we did last week. I was eager to do some other big exploration and Jenny was too. We decided to tackle Mauna Kea, the highest peak on the island. It’s possible to drive to the summit of Mauna Kea, but a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required and most rental agencies won’t allow their vehicles to be taken to the summit. It took a bit of extra research on my part to find a company we could use, but I got it all sorted. So first thing this morning, Jenny and I were off the ship and to our rental agency. Then we loaded into our SUV and headed ... read more

We took a couple of days and drove over to the other side of the island to see some waterfalls. Hilo is the seat of government for the island of Hawaii, and is located on this, the rainy side of the island. It gets more than 180 inches of rain a year, and is the rainiest city in the U.S. So, there are waterfalls for a reason. We watched the weather forcast, and picked a couple of days that had a chance of rain of only 70% and 80%, instead of the 90% that it had been for the past week. The first half of the first day, on the drive over there and up to the top of the island where the Waipio Valley is located, it was dry. But, as soon as we got ... read more

the four of us adventurers (dorinda, dave, helen and me) left maui this morning at 9am for bigger better things on the big island. arriving in hilo, helen had already reserved a car and we were quickly on our way to arnott's lodge, the hostel recommended to us, where we were fortunate enough to see our first geckos of the trip!!! after checking in to the deserted hostel, we went to the weekly farmers market to pick up some produce, including some fresh pineapple, avocados, and even the hawaiian specialty: spam sushi. that's right, i said spam sushi. now, some of you may know that hawai'i is the capital of spam... they eat it up like crazy... so it comes as no surprise really that they would make sushi out of it... right? well this had ... read more

From the Green Sand Beach I decided to keep going to the other side of the island to the Volcano National Park. I stayed in a cute little cottage in the rain forest, it was probably one of the most amazing places I've ever stayed. Fresh fruit, milk, oj, eggs and more delivered to my door each morning, there was a hot tub hidden in a little hut with candles everywhere and the cottage itself was beautiful inside. The owners were very interested in helping get the most out of the trip, and provided me with maps to the volcano national park, tips for where to see the lava flow, as well as food suggestions for dinner. PS. If you are ever in the area Thai Thai is pricy but worth it for some of the ... read more

Hilo, the true Hawaii... Hilo is 2 hours drive on the other side from the Kona Coast. There is not a single top-resort, it rains here more than anywhere else in Hawaii, and most of the tourists are day-trippers from the Kona Coast. So why do we spend so many days here? Well, thanks to Marty, Chris and their two daughters, we are going to discover the true Hawaii. Marty is one of Ma'ri sisters, so this is also for me my first family visit. Guys you are great, we had an amazing time with you and hope to see you again very soon. Thanks for your warm welcome and to have make us discover your little corner of paradise. As I say Hilo is more rainy than Kona, but this also mean much greener. Over ... read more

Surreal doesn't even BEGIN to describe the awesomeness of trekking to the top of the world's largest active volcano - a 40 mile (64 kilometres to the Canucks) round-trip to over 13 000 feet and back again. Add in all of the factors contributing to its awesomeness - altitude sickness, total isolation (the only people within at least a 30 mile radius), the silence so deafening your ears ring, 2-3 feet of snow, severe winter weather warnings, climbing on hardened rivers of lava, and the only other people to attempt the climb when we did being rescued by a Search-and-Rescue helicopter.... and you can tell it was quite the trek!! Not only can we now brag that we've climbed to the top of the world's largest active volcano, but also the world's single largest mountain... but ... read more

Today we travel over the Big Island to Kona. Kona is the region. Kailu'a is the town to which we will move all our worldly goods that we brought along. Ann and I have traveled to wherever our son and daughter-in-law have lived in the Far East, U. S., and now Europe, so we have learned to pack light. We have only one carry-on suitcase and one personal bag apiece. We found the laundry early and used it often in each place we stayed. Unlike many of our group, we came from and return to a warm climate. Florida does not require a heavy coat, gloves, and boots this time of year so we don't have those bulky things to haul along. Everyone was up and eating the buffet breakfast early because we had to be ... read more

Our first free day, a Friday, dawned pleasant and clear. Ann signed up to go to the Tsunami Museum. Her group left around 9:30 and I left for the helicopter ride about 10. We got our breakfast at Uncle Billy's General Store. Ann and her group of ten met Allen Crawford, accountant for the Lyman Museum. He led them through the small tsunami museum in one of the downtown banks. They saw a video showing the before and after scenes related to where the tsunami hit Hilo almost fifty yeas ago. The Hawai'ian Islands are the capitol of the world in many different ways. They have the most endangered species. Hilo is the rain capitol of the world, having the highest average rainfall of any city. They also have more tsunamis than any place in the ... read more
