Lee picked me up at the airport in Hilo today. Hilo had one of the prettiest airports I have ever seen, and all the staff was overly nice. After Lee picked me up, we started our sightseeing adventures. Our first stop was Akaka Falls, which lies to the west of Hilo. The scenery of Hawaii is completely amazing. It has the look of a tropical rainforest only slightly tamed by man. I’ll have to post some pictures later when I get access to a faster Internet. Lee’s family only has dialup. Anyways, its been raining all day today. When I say rain, I don’t mean actual rain, I mean a heavy mist. And it hasn’t stopped. After Akaka falls, we went to burger king for lunch where Lee managed somehow to eat $12 worth of food. ... read more

31/05/05: Picture downhill skiing and then 1 hour later basking in the tropical Hawaiian sun. Many people don’t know this but Hawaii gives you the opportunity to do this. Coming from someone that hasn’t even seen snow before, let alone been skiing, I thought that it was best not to indulge in this escapade. Besides, I think snowfall in summer is minimal on the mountain summits. You can, however, experience natures power on the opposite temperature spectrum and stand next to a river of 1150 deg C molten lava. This can be done all year round but the unusual, although very obvious (if you think about it) characteristic of active volcanoes is that the landscape is always changing. New land is added/destroyed each day which makes it very difficult for tour guides to predict the daily ... read more

Situated a short plane ride south of Oahu, Big Island doesn’t attract the large crowds of its smaller neighbouring islands. 90% of the visitors to Hawaii stay on the island of Oahu and half of those stay at or near Waikiki. Big Island is famous for two things; 1. Captain Cook was killed on this island in 1779 in a town on the West Coast now known as 'Captain Cook' - very original name. Australians have somewhat immortalised Captain Cook and consider him to be the greatest explorer of his time. The Hawaiians do not glorify Cook or the influence the first Europeans had on their lives or culture. Speaking with some of the Hawaiians, I think they look at that period of time with sadness and it is not surprising given that within a hundred ... read more

Uncle Billy’s Thursday, March 31, 2005. This is our last day on the Big Island of Hawaii and things are happening here in Hilo. It is the festival of Merrie Monarch. This is the international hula competition. Folks from every island in the Pacific including Japan come to compete to do the best hula. Each hotel hosts a hula demo open to the public. It was fascinating. The Merrie Monarch Festival includes a huge arts and craft market. So that combined with a trip to Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory filled our am/pm before flying back to Oahu. Cherie and Rick found a wonderful restaurant for dinner, the Tiki Village at the Aston Hotel. We all enjoyed a fabulous meal. ... read more

"See as much of the world as you can just for the fun of it." -- Pam Flowers WED SITES Volcano NP My Island BB Mauna Kea Wednesday, March 30, 2005. Breakfast at the B&B was great: papaya with Maui pineapple sprinkled with macadamia nuts, bread pudding with rhubarb, blueberry bagels with volcano plum and guava, hard boiled egg, guava juice, and tea or coffee! Since it had rained hard all night we made a decision to come back to the lava flow at dusk. So we began our trek to Mauna Kea 13,796’, the tallest mountain on the planet, (32,000 ft ) granted much of it is under the sea. Well, our ride included a downpour, as the natives say about the Big Island, here the “Rain Reigns”. We drove from 4,000’ down to ... read more

Aloha and Mahalo I had just gotten a windfall, and I wanted to do something. I thought to myself, 'I want to see a volcano'. The big island of Hawaii has a volcano... The Big Island I came to Hawaii on Pleasant Holidays. One of my coworkers was a AAA member, and she helped get my tickets and reservations including car rental. That was way cool. I stayed in Hilo on the Big Island (too bad I can't remember the hotel name). After I arrived, I got my rental car, and I was off. I went on the volcano tour, and I got to see the top of a dormant volcano. Then I wanted to see the active volcano. I drove to the coast where you can see steam rising from the ocean due to lava ... read more
