Got off the ship at Hilo and got on our tour bus to go and see the volcano’s. Jumping on the bus felt like we were getting on the senior cits bus for the day. People needed help getting on and off. Neway we were on our way went thru downtown Hilo and to the Volcano National Park. Visited a few volcanoes which were craters. It was amazing. No lava in site but each crater was just steaming. You saw some dry lava, it was like we were on another planet. The tour guide said NASA had trained there astronauts on this surface as it resembles the moon. It was very usual. Apparently the Killawa Volcano is the 2nd most active in the world. It has been active since 1983 and when the ship leaves port ... read more

The most active volcano on the planet! It was quite a sight. I did not see any active lava flows close up, altough I was able to see their glow at night though. However the sights I did see were humbling, and walking along the sides of the craters was inspiring. I stayed the night at the Volcano House and had dinner at the edge of the main crater. Maapallon aktiivisin tulivuori! Vietin yön Volcano Housissa (Tulivuoritalo) ja söin päivällisen suurimman kraatterin reunalla.... read more

Yes, I'm still alive and I am doing fine as usually. And of course I am busy as usual. So basically I have nothing new to tell. My life is boring. All I do is running, studying and working. Ok, enough. Everybody who knows me knows that this is not completely true. I do a little more than that. Well, last weekend I was on Big Island. To run of course. We had the conference down there. A week after the earthquake (by the way the eartquake wasn't bad at all. I had a great day without electricity) we couldn't see any signs of the earthquake. the race itself was awsome- I won!!! Our team got third and Todd won as well. So it was a succesful race. After the race we went to watch the ... read more

Pictures are following, as soon as Christian sends them to me! Big Island!!! Finally, I could fly again. I really love being in an airplane and fly to new places. Ok, I have been to Big Island before, so it wasn’t completely new. But I like it. Big Island is totally different then the other islands. It is bigger and everything is more spread out. And, in addition, it is even more laid back then Oahu. Relax… The volcanoes are very exciting. It looks like on the moon. You can see the dry lava and rocks, craters etc. It is fascinating. A different world. But I should start at the beginning. On Friday I didn’t have to work or go to school. Instead, I went with my team to Big Island. We had a race on ... read more

Aloha, So we've been on the big island of hawaii for 5 days now and we've seen heaps! When we got here we thought (because our guide books told us we could) that to hire a car we could just arrive at the airport and hire one - but we thought wrong and the only car we could hire (after 10 minutes of asking hire companies multiple times) was a car I'd been paying out ever since I landed in the US. A Ford Mustang Convertible! So we hired it and stayed in Hilo our first night and got bought a drink from some locals. Thursday we drove to volcanoes national park and decide to walk across Kileaua Caldera (a 7 mile return trip) in the hottest part of the day starting from Volcano House which ... read more

Underway on the USCGC WALNUT My short fly by to check on the house in Alexandria and the fam in California done, it was on to Hawaii. So what did I do in the first few days after I was out of the Coast Guard? Well I was out on the 1st of July, swore in to the Reserves on the 7th of July and flew out to Hawaii for a week underway with Meg on the WALNUT on the 15th of July. So much for flying solo. It was great to see Meg and get underway again. I hadn't seen Meg since her and Bob's wedding so we had lots to catch up on. The house she and Bob have is even better than the last, no pool but instead of one deck overlooking the ... read more

At some point during the week the idea of seeing a volcano became compelling. I suppose it’s that living against a ridgeline of volcanic rock gives one a new appreciation for lava. We have weekends off, so I flew over to the Big Island, staying in a Bed and Breakfast in the town of Volcano (!!), outside Hawaii Volcano National Park. While part of Kiluea is very active, it’s mostly active underground. After dark, however, you can see lava glowing in the distance. Nearby they’ve left the lava flow from 2003 to harden across the road, which does bring the whole reality of volcanic activity home. Aside from going to see the lava flows, the park offers a road around the Kilauea Caldera, for an up close look -- or as up close as I want ... read more

Well, today has been interesting to say the least. Apparently I shortchanged Lee last night. He woke up early and was ready to go as the sun was rising. The drive was a 2 hour drive out to Monnau(sp) Kea. I ended up buying a $30 pair of sweat pants because the summit was below freezing, and there was a 50 mph wind. The reason for the exorbitant price was due to the people running the welcome station to the park. The guy there even admitted doubling the price of what he paid for it to sell it to us. He didn’t even think he was cheating anyone. Well, I doubt he would have told the truth even if he did think he was being a cheat. The mountain was a crazy climb. It was 7 ... read more

Went to church yesterday with the McIntosh’s. Their church is held in the local preschool cafeteria since it is still a very new and small church. Lee’s father is actually the interim preacher until they get a new one. I don’t know if I have mentioned this to everyone, but Lee’s family is Very religious. Independent Baptist. Every time I visit they bring up my religious beliefs, or there lack of, and I have to find some way to settle them down before they try to convert me on the spot. Or at least try to Witness me. O well. I appreciate that they care so much for me although I just wish they could express it in a better way. I was expecting the whole talk yesterday, but it came today instead. I’ll write about ... read more

Today, Lee took me to see the Kilauea Volcano. It’s not really much of a mountain actually, it just spews hot lava down the side of a cliff that feeds into the ocean. The park was only a 45 min drive, but the park itself is massive. I’m thinking they advertised 200000 acres. May have been more. After a little sightseeing around the park and seeing a Hula dance, we drove down this really exciting road to the coast. The road dropped over 3000 ft before reaching the coast. Lee’s family has apparently decided that I am not allowed to drive, which is probably for the best, but I was really envious. The road was just plain fun actually 20 miles long. After descending the 3000+ ft to the coast and crossing several lava rock fields, ... read more
