Aloha, April 2012. Last cruse before ending on the my 3rd contract with Celebrity Cruises onboard sweet Century. Port of call - Hilo, The Big Island of Hawaii. Before visiting Big Island, I had never thought of it as a quintessential destination. For some reason, tropical islands always seem so small and compact in my head. We were party of four, the Balkan gang again (Lana, Ante, Vedran and myself). As soon we walk out from the ship none of us was sure what exactly to do. The mega attraction on Big Island is Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii's sole World Heritage Site. Another misconception I had in my head was that Hawaii, The bIg Island would be pretty much beaches and palm tress all around. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out the destination is ... read more

Geo: 19.7297, -155.09So full disclosure- I've never seen the magic in the cruising underworld. The idea of being transported, along with 2,000 of your closest friends to various ports of call that could easily pass for very large souvenir stands selling the same T-shirts and trinkets didn't hold much appeal. And the never ending buffet line-ups and riveting shuffleboard tournaments couldn't pull me to the dark side. But when I mentioned the idea of a slow boat back to Hawaii/Asia to the Princess, she was all over it (and it became another in a long list of retirement gifts she was busy acquiring because what the princess wants, the princess gets). Under the guise of trying anything once, I was happy to give it a go, and it had to be a breeze compared to air ... read more

Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii, 19 juillet Wow!

Caught early morning flight to Hilo on Hawaii's Big Island for our tour of Volcano National Park. We to a sweet factory and watched workers making biscuits coated in dried squid and dipped in chocolate (the Asians love it apparently), then went to a macadamia nut factory only to have them explain that their macadamia nuts came from Queensland – ho hum. We finally went to see the volcano lava fields and craters - never got to see any magma or lava lake (although it was definitely there) but we did get to walk over a 20 yr old lava flow which was pretty amazing. We visited the main caldera Kīlauea and saw it’s huge 2 mile wide crater and a smaller crater within it which was spewing sulphur from deep within its belly – lucky ... read more

Sunday 6th March (again) – Mustangs and Treehouses Crossed the international date line on our overnight flight to Hawaii, so we get to do Sunday all over again as we head to the Big Island: Ford Mustang – Have always wanted to drive a Mustang, so we picked up a 4.0L V6 black convertible from Hilo airport – no immediate need to get the top down due to precipitation. Volcano Village – A small but perfectly formed residential area and local shops on the edge of the national park. Maile Treehouse – Our home in the trees is a stunningly beautiful open plan 1 bed apartment with shower and Jacuzzi! Furniture, fittings and little extra touches make it a memorable place and set in fabulous, secluded jungle garden. Monday 7th March – Major Eruptions To continue ... read more

August 29, 2010 Today was designated as the road trip day. There is a 50-some odd mile route (one way) on Highway 19 that wraps around the north side of the island, offering pull-offs for walking, vistas, and tourist traps. When driving on the Big Island, be aware that there are no courtesy signs saying "Destination X 1/4 mile ahead." When it says "Destination X" with an arrow, you had better be ready to make that next turn, even if it is only 50 yards ahead. One sign said "Destination X middle lane." There was only the lane that went straight and a left turn lane. Technically, I suppose the left turn lane was in the middle of the outside lanes, but to a reasonable person, middle lanes are only when there are three lanes in ... read more

August 28, 2010 Lili'uokalani Gardens Our first stop in the morning was a visit to the Japanese-style garden on the waterfront of Hilo. It was so beautiful and serene. Several local families were just arriving and setting up their canopy tents, settling in for a day of sunshine and relaxation. Mom and I strolled the paths winding over the bridges and around tropical trees. The peace was broken when a tour bus rolled along, however, offloading tourists who flashed camera at everything. Yes, I take pictures of everything too, but somehow I feel it is different when I am not among a hoard of foreigners. After the bus packed up, we headed out of town for a scenic tour of the coast.
