Geo: 30.4195, -87.2217This morning we did some clothes shopping and then returned and did a short walking tour of the North Hill area. The area comprises 50 blocks of houses of varying styles built starting in the 1890's.... read more

Geo: 30.4195, -87.2217We headed back to Mobile to visit the USS Alabama which is a battleship which has been decommissioned and is now open to the public. The ship is very large and we were to go below decks as well as up into the tower. The largest projectile for the 16 inch guns can way up to 2700 pounds. The ship fought in several battles in the south Pacific. There was also a hangar housing a number of aircraft including the A 12 which flew higher and faster than the SR 71 spy plane. This plane at its time flew at an altitude of 23 miles and actually flew faster than a bullet from an M1. The spy planes were secret at the time and operated under the CIA. The presidents between Eisenhower and Bush Sr ... read more

Geo: 30.4195, -87.2218Relaxing day today. We visited the Naval Air Museum and Joe Patti's which is a famous seafood store. Bill & Debi are treating us to homemade Louisiana cooking tonight - red beans and rice! It was an OK day but by the time we got back the storm had returned. It is expected that the weather changes for the better tomorrow. In the meantime we have been having a great time talking, drinking wine and enjoying good food.... read more

Geo: 30.4195, -87.2217Long day on the road. Travelled through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida to get to Bill & Debi's place in Pensacola. One of the things we noticed while travelling is the large amount of churches of all sizes and types including Baptist and many "No Name" varieties. The structures ranged in type from grandiose structures to storage type buildings. We arrived at Bill& Debi's just before the storm hit. Torrential rains and during the night a magnificent lightning and thunder display. Typical of this area at this time.... read more

Guess what... we're still in Pensacola! We arrived at the airport only to find out our flight to Miami had been cancelled last night. The plane from Miami never showed up, so, we spent the next hour and a half making alternate arrangements. Flights were either all booked or didn't make a connection for Quito in time. We ended up changing to Delta vs. American, leaving Pensacola at 2:30pm to make a flight on Delta from Atlanta to Quito 45 minutes after we arrive. We'll be in Quito tonight at something like 10:55pm, so I won't promise a blog post from Quito tonight. Looking on the bright side, we weren't going to do anything in Quito today anyways, except for grabbing dinner there. If you don't hear from me today, you'll definitely get an entry tomorrow ... read more

Away We Go! Well, its time to start another vacation. My wife and I will be flying to Miami, then on to Quito, Ecuador. After travelling for 3 weeks around Ecuador, we will join a Hillcrest Baptist Church Mission Group in Quito for a week in the jungle of eastern Ecuador. I hope you can enjoy some of our trip by following us in this blog. I will try to post a daily entry with some photos, each and every day. I probably won't be able to post anything the week we are in the jungle, since I don't think we'll even have electricity, much less internet. Look forward to posts from Quito, Mindo, Latacunga, the Quilotoa Loop, Banos, Cuenca, and Otavalo. You can find them all on any decent map of Ecuador. See you soon, ... read more

Geo: 30.4208, -87.2172Today we traveled south to the Gulf Coast. Weather is warm and muggy with some cloud. The beaches along the Gulf Coast and Biloxi area are man made and stretch for miles amidst the tourist destinations and casinos. Two years ago we were in this area and many of the residential areas within a couple of blocks of the beach area have to date still not been rebuilt since Katrina. We arrived at our trip's end in the late afternoon. ... read more

Geo: 30.4208, -87.2172We had an easy relaxing day today. Temperature is in the 26 - 28 degree range and sunny. The house and car are air conditioned thankfully. Drove around Pensacola and then parked downtown and wandered around looking at the buildings and architecture. On our return we did the "southern thing" and sat on the front porch talking to locals. We were joined by local residents - the chameleons. We had dinner in East Pensacola at the New Yorker Deli - excellent food reasonably priced. Tomorrow we pick up the rental car and head south along the east coast of Florida.... read more

Geo: 30.4208, -87.2172This morning we walked around the North Hill area. Many of the homes date to the early 1900's. This is a very quiet pleasant neighborhood with large trees, parks, etc. A variety of architectural styles - British, Spanish & French which reflects the background of the Pensacola area. Then we headed to the beach located on the Naval Base. There are less people and the beach is just as pleasant. It was warm and sunny but a very strong wind. On the way back we stopped at Joe Patti's - a large local seafood market which is the size of a small supermarket. The seafood is mainly local but also a variety of imported items. ... read more
