We have arrived in Key Largo. We were able to fly into Tamiami Airport just south of Miami and only had about an hour drive, actually somewhat less since Karen drove! I have attached a photo of the view from our balcony. The harbor in the background is where we will catch the diveboat. Our first dive is tomorrow morning. Well, it's time to go explore and grab some lunch. -Happy Diving!... read more

On Friday 29th of January, I drove through the Florida Everglades to get to the #1 Highway that would take me down to the Keys, and Key Largo. They call that strip of road Alligator Alley but I didn’t see any alligators. In fact I haven’t seen an alligator or manatee yet. Living in the Florida Keys is very expensive and the park I had reserved for two weeks has the highest rates I have ever paid but I really wanted to enjoy the Florida experience so here goes! The population of Key Largo is a little over 11,000 although I don’t know whether that is winter or summer residents. It has been pretty warm since I got here so it must get pretty hot and humid in the summer months even with the coastal breeze, ... read more

Freshly out of fundamentals my buddy Dan and I decided to take GUE Tech 1 to give us maximum time next season for some local decompression dives. We started planning in early December and sent out some emails and decided on taking the class with the GUE training director Bob Sherwood. Bob had a reputation of being a tough instructor and as the training director and an instructor trainer how could we go wrong? After contacting him we found out Bob had a small window where he could fit us in and it worked out perfectly. We decided to do the class somewhere warm and Florida fit the bill perfectly. Bob had recently done a Tech 1 class in Key Largo so he had a lot of the logistics already figured out. Class was scheduled to ... read more

Had decided to go to the Exumas with my buddies that I had been running with since Vero Beach. Even sith the broken heat exchanger held together with rubber and hose clamps. We were leaving on Monday but when I started the boat all hell broke loose. A hose burst and salt water was gushing out of it. I had a spare but it was a bear to get on. I finally got it fixed and started ti up and the leak in the exzchanger started again. I took it apart and got it to not leak again but it was already 2:00 so I bagged going with them and decided ot stick with the originaql plan, go to Marathon on Boot Key and moor ther until I get it fixed. A lot of people go ... read more

Då e halve opphaldet mitt her i Miami snart over og 6 veke gjenstår!

We had another day relaxing today and the kids had a chance to spend some time playing in the pool. And unlike if we had been in a Brit resort, we could stroll down to the pool in the middle of the morning and grab some of the many spare sun-beds, none of which had someone else’s towels covering them. The storms had stopped and the mosquitoes seemed to have calmed down again as a result. At least there would be no new bites to add to the ones we were still covered in from the Everglades. Later in the afternoon we went shopping for some jewellery for my wife, taking advantage of the fact that it is a fraction of the price that it is back in rip-off Britain. In the evening, it was back ... read more

For the first time since we had been on holiday we had a late, leisurely start to the day. After a breakfast and a while checking-out the iguana that patrolled the reception area, we went to the swimming pool to relax for a while. Once we had had enough of all that, we visited the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The actual coral park is several miles out to sea, so we went out on a boat tour. Snorkelling would have been fun, but given how far out it was and how choppy the sea was, it would not have been safe for the children. They boat had a glass bottom so we were able to see the coral whilst our guide pointed things out and the boat bobbed up and down in the water. ... read more

Once we had had about as much pixie dust as we could handle, we drove down to the Florida Keys . We thought it would take forever to drive all that way, but due to the long, straight and relatively empty roads it soon passed. I was able to do over 100 miles at a constant speed on cruise control, which would be completely unheard of on the UK motorways. It was amazing how some very basic things can be so completely different. We went to fill up with petrol (or ‘gas’ or whatever) and we were completely thrown. Luckily an American came to our help. If you need to fill up with ‘gas’ in America , you need to pay first, unlike the UK where you pay afterwards. Also some pumps need the bracket on ... read more
