Washington D.C. - 34°c When the alarm went off this morning, I felt the worst I’ve felt all trip. I didn’t get much sleep at all in between all of my coughing and sneezing, with my cold symptoms running very high. I contemplated staying in bed. Missing the coach drop off at 9am would mean having to pick up a taxi into the city later on in the day. Feeling as though I ought to keep powering through, (and not wanting to pick up the $40 cab ride, being so far out of the centre) I got up, had a long shower and managed to get on the coach with about 15 others. Apparently the night had extended quite far into the early morning for many, and subsequently it was a very empty coach trip into ... read more

We got up early to get the shuttle at 8:00am to get out the the Arlington National Cemetery. It took about half an hour to get out there from our hotel and we got there well in time to see 9:00am session of changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier. In there cemetery there are over 126,000 tomb stones with about 5 added each day. We also saw the President J.F Kennedy Gravesite. After this we went and had a quick stop at the Iwo Jima Memorial. It has a great big statue of the raising of the flag. After this, we were dropped off in DC outside the Smithsonian Musuems. By this time it was about 10am and we had a booking at midday to go to the top of the ... read more

Washington D.C. - 32°c After dosing up on medication last night and sleeping quite heavily throughout the night, it was a bit of a struggle to get up when the alarm on my mobile phone went off at 7am today. Thankfully after a fairly cold shower owing to the fact that I can’t get to grips with how the taps work in this hotel, I was slightly more rejuvenated and ready for quite a big day, and whatever D.C. had to throw at me! After two slices of toast downstairs in the ‘do it yourself’ breakfast room and bumping into several of the group who were already down there, and those arriving after I did, we boarded the bus and headed off at 8am. Owing to a bit of morning traffic, along with the distance needed ... read more

We started a lil later this morning, bags to coach wasn't until 8:45am.. yay, a sleep in!! We drove for about 2 hours (of which i slept the whole thing) before stopping at a rest stop just for 20minutes. Then drove for about another hour before arriving at the state capital of Virginia (which we now crossed over into from North Carolina) Richmond. While we were driving, in honour of our next stop, Washington DC, Christina put on the movie National Treasure for us, We had an hour and 15mins to walk around the pretty little town, to have lunch and make our way back to the coach for the remainder of the drive, and remainder of the movie. We arrived in Washington DC, well, our hotel is in Maryland, at just after 4, got ready ... read more

Below is a sample of photos from my short and crammed week of going aways. I won't normally post just pictures, but in this case it seems to work better since all the words were spoken in person. Thanks to everyone!... read more

The next stop on our journey was Washington, DC. We packed as much sites as possible into 24 hours and our feet were killling us. Our hotel was walking distance from the Mall. So we walked. Starting at the Smithsoniam Castle working our way over to the Washington monument then on to the reflecting pool and the Lincoln Memorial. After a quick stop for lunch and a break for our feet, we walked over to the White House. The grounds were beautiful. Abbey wore uncomfortable flip flops which after so much walking made her miserable which she in turn decided to make us miserable. :) So we decided to take a cab ride back to the hotel so Abbey could change shoes. With Abbey once again happy (for the most part...she is a pre-teen after all) ... read more

Today Marilyn stayed at the coach and so I had to go solo into D.C. Consequently, my pictures don't have a familiar face in them. I don't like that but not much choice when I am taking the pictures myself. I did my usual fast paced touring that many people would not like. I do keep up a pace and I like it that way because I'm just not the kind of guy that needs to stare at something for 20 minutes and I see a lot of stuff. I look at photo albums the same way. It drives me nuts when people look at a picture for an hour and a half before they turn a page. We are parked out in Maryland so I drove the truck to the nearest train station and rode ... read more

Hello from the Nations Capital still. On friday we caught the metro (subway) down to the Pentagon, Changed lines to get there, thought we were pretty good teaching the kids how to read the underground map and actually getting on the right train going the right direction. There's not much to look at from the outside and of course your'e not allowed on the inside. We did walk around to the memorial, for the people who died from the 9/11 terrorist attack, that flew the plane into the Pentagon. Its quite a cool memorial. 153 people died, 59 were on the plane. We had to use the 'bathroom' while we were there, so there's a portacom toilet there. Typical government department.I opened the door to be met by nice cool air conditioned air coming out. Once ... read more

We had planned to go to the Outer Banks and camp on the beach for two days, but after 4 weeks of beautiful weather we hit our first rain and the forcast continued for several days. We changed our plan and drove into North Carolina .... Hit the Vistor Center and didn't find anything very exciting on our drive path so continued to South Carolina and decided to visit Charleston. In fact we drove within an hour of my birthplace (Hartsville SC) and I feel guilty of not stopping and seeing my uncle but I didn't want to impose without warning. We hit Charleston at 9PM and decided on a hotel instead of camping in the rain.... read more
