Today we set off from LA to Monterey. After waiting for ages at Alamo as their computers aren't working, we pick out our Pontiac GT. It's nice, it's very nice and it goes very very fast. The speed is wasted as the speed limit is 65 in all the states we're visiting. We set the Sat Nav for Monterey and drive via Pacific Coast Highway. Kev pulls over in Santa Monica so I can take photos of the pier, it's the one used in the Lost Boys and makes me feel like I'm a teenager again. As we drive up the beach I spot a Taco Bell and as we missed breakfast, it's chicken burritos at 10.30am! We leave Santa Monica, still on Pacific Coast Highway, drive through Malibu and gawp at the beautiful beach ... read more

If you're going to San Francisco

San Francisco until the 1849 Californian gold rush was just a sleepy hamlet of 300 people that changed dramatically after the rush. Once installed in the hotel decided to explore locally as I had arrived in the morning and so to maximize my time headed for Union Square. San Francisco is all hills and like South America all the interesting stuff seems to be at the top, or “it’s only 2/3 blocks away” (what they don’t mention is that each block is at least 200 metres). Eventually found Union Square, a square in the true sense, very much a meeting place and an area for displaying artwork .On each side is some of the top stores in the States, If you have unlimited credit this is the place to shop, Macys, Tiffany, Saks etc are ... read more

So, last time I blogged I was still in Cambodia. I ended up buying a package ticket from my guesthouse straight to the Thai island of Koh Chang for $25 US. Not too bad I guess considering it was an all day drive. It was beautiful scenery through the georgeous and lush Cambodian mountainside including 4 river crossings on a handmade barge powered by automobile engines. Once we got to the Thailand border, we boarded another bus and were on our way to Trat, the mainland city nearest to the island of Koh Chang (where I will meet up w/ Nate once again). It rained a little on the way, but was still a pleasant enough ride. After a 20 minute ferry ride and a 40 minute ride in the back of a pickup truck ... read more

Monday April 16, We arranged a Lincoln Town car Limousine to take us to Kennedy Airport this morning for our flight to Los Angeles. Check in was a breeze, we didn’t have to take our bags anywhere for scrutiny at all, it just went down the belt, quite different to other airports where it is taken aside and X rayed. We walked to the Admirals Club, which is the American Airlines lounge. It was quite roomy, but all they were serving was coffee, tea, juice and a plain bagel. Paul got on line to read the Sydney Morning Herald but it was blocked, as were all Aussie news sites, the prompt said it was due to due to 'violence and hate' contained on it. Obviously their net guard blankets a lot of sites this way. ... read more

USA to homeAlex & Laura Enroute to the States from Fiji we have the strange experience of crossing the Date Line. Not only does this mean we have a 42 hour day (a large proportion of this spent travelling I might add) we actually land earlier than we took off. Thus we arrive at LAX at 14:30 on March 15th having left Fiji at 22:30 on March 15th. Most peculiar. We had spent a long time choosing where to stay in L.A as the city is so vast and public transport isn't great. Add to that there are some neighbourhoods where it is easier to get shot than to find a cab, and the issue takes on a whole different perspective. In the end we plumped for the Orchid Suites in Hollywood, and it was a ... read more

Its been nice and relaxing here in L.A. I hung out with Owen and Courtenay on Thursday night. We got some really great sushi and then just crashed - still recouperating from the night before. On Friday Jeff picked me up after work and we went to his apartment in Venice Beach. We hung out with one of his friends who is a manager at his house in the hills. It was ridiculously gorgeous, but felt like a museum... I wish I had thought to take pictures. The next day Jeff had to teach an acting class so I wandered around Venice Beach looking at all the cheesy tourist items and the general parade of freaks. The beach was quite beautiful. That night we went to see "Blades of Glory" - which I worked on ... read more

Quicky entry for travel day 1.. Plane delayed leaving Heathrow with passenger escorted off plane. Would love to say why but we didnt get the benefit of seeing anything. Delay caused by the off loading of his sodding baggage... Long flight, good films, passable food, excellent service though then the joy of Los Angeles Immigration. After approximately 12 hours on the plane, the prospect of a 2 hour wait to be interrogated makes you wonder why the hell you would choose to come (back) to the US! A travel tip, give at least 4 hours for a connecting flight, better to do an overnight stay and travel the next day, so many of our fellow passengers got caught out like this. Luckily we had booked into the Airport Marriot with what appeared to be the entire ... read more
